Labor/deliver cost

I tried searching for this, but didn't see anything from this year. I am wondering if anyone knows approximately how much the cost of a vaginal delivery and a c-section is (not taking insurance into account). This would include hospital stay overnight.

I was induced, had a vaginal delivery and an epidural (I was in the hospital for 3 nights). The total excluding insurance was $36,000.

  • When I went to my first ob appointment my dr gave me an estimate of how much everything was going to cost with out insurance including hospital stay and circumcision if I chose to do so. I would ask your dr or the hospital.
  • I would call your insurance provider. Basically, you have to understand what will be covered at 100%, and what will be applied to your deductible and co-insurance. Also, knowing your max out of pocket per individual, and for the family, is important.
With my insurance, for example, all prenatal care is covered 100% so I don't pay a dime. Labor, Delivery, Surgery (if needed), anesthesia, etc (all things birth related) go to my deductible and then my co-insurance after that. However, given that my max out of pocket for individual is $3600, that's the most I could have to pay for me... and then again any charges for baby would be applied to the out of pocket max for baby.
  • Your OB can provide you with estimates. Also, depending on who your insurance provider is, most will provide an estimate of what is covered under various insurance plans.

  • Before insurance, 30k or more.

We have great insurance, so the whole pregnancy and delivery will cost less than $1500 out of pocket. Assuming I don't have to have a billion more ultrasounds because of this fucking GD.

Man, vag delivery is expensive where you all live!   Average at my hospital is $7,500!  But no epis here, so maybe that's the difference maker.

ETA: Added a comma because "man vag" just looked funny.

  • It really varies depending on insurance. I pay nothing for prenatal care or labor and delivery. If you're asking as a general thing, try google.

  • My insurance covers everything 100%. I have no idea what it would cost if we didn't have insurance. I never asked.
  • Good lord having a baby is ridiculous! I had my son in a naval hospital so we didn't have to pay anything and I never saw an EOB. This LO because we have kick ass insurance, I just have to pay a hospitalization copay of $125. No copays for ultrasounds, and have only had to pay $40 out of pocket for copays so far... We are just trying to figure out if our insurance is going to cover circumcision and all that jazz.
  • If you don't have insurance, figure out what hospital you would be delivering at and get quotes from them. Some hospitals will have you start making payments on a self payment plan that will be significantly less than what they will bill insurance. I know in Las Vegas, a non complicated vaginal birth was about $7000.

Hospitals charge more if you have insurance. If you don't, make sure they are aware of that. At our hospital, the billing department will work with you to lower your bill as well, but you have to take the initiative and call them yourself.
^^^ This too. They jack up the prices if they know you have insurance. Then they go back and forth with the insurance company and try to "justify" that certain price. We paid somewhere around 2500 with insurance.

  • It's free in canada! You just have to pay if you want a private or semi-private room post delivery. I think a private room is about $200, but most people are covered by their insurance. So the only thing we really have to pay for is parking!
Ultrasounds and ob apoinments are free too. We had a 3d scan done, and had to pay $70 for that, as we did it privately.
  • Wishing I lived in Canada...
  • I have to pay my OB a global fee of $6000 which covers all OB appts and for him to be at the delivery. On top of that is another $800 for an assistant surgeon if cesarean is needed, plus the per night room fee. I don't know what else is added on.
  • My midwife charges about $6500 without insurance. That includes prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum care for mom and baby.
  • In 2012, I had an uneventful anesthesia free v delivery with a 2 night stay and the bill was 16k and change. My sis said the epi was listed for 7k on her bill in '07 which is why I mention that. This doesn't include anything for my baby.

I paid $250 hosp co pay and miss that insurance! I'll likely pay 2-3k this time.

  • I don't think I pay anything out of pocket with my insurance.
If you don't have insurance make sure everyone knows that.  Sometimes they will charge you less and when they offer something expensive you can decide if you want that.  You can also talk to them about your time staying in the hospital and if you can save money by leaving at a certain time or something.
  • excluding insurance or type of provider/coverage, cost varies by state and facility. (VA) With DS, the amount charged to insurance was about $56k for me (2 weeks in hospital + csection) and $84k for DS (28 days in nicu/PCN). We payed two deductibles since DS stayed behind...$2500 total.

I could hardly believe what was charged to insurance. And as pp said, there are different charges to insurance companies then there would be for an independent.

  • Best bet is to call your insurance provider or ask your OBGYN billing services. It really varies depending where you go. My daughter came at 33 weeks and was in the NICU for a month. Our bill was over $130,000. And that was just for her NICU stay. We had additional bills for the doctor, the week long stay at the hospital, and other various "extras". Thank goodness for dual coverage!
  • Also if you don't have insurance you can sometimes get on a "sliding scale" fee schedule.  Mine gave me my info even though we'd make too much to be on it and insurance will cover almost everything and if you make less than $50,000 (total household) you only pay about $2,000 max.

  • I know in missouri and I'm sure it's in other states there is a government program called WIC for women, infants, and child for expecting mothers that don't have insurance or are low income. I would look into that to see if it can help. But I am a FTM so Im not much of help I know my insurance covers everything prenatal 100% and the most I pay out of pocket is $3,000 for the delivery whether it be vaginal or c-section.

That's the same here in the UK bar £ instead of $!! I really don't know how people would afford it without insurance!
  • Yea i have state insurance because my employer does not offer ins so im covered for everything pre pregnancy then all L & D stuff then 2 days in hospital for vag delivery and 4 days for c section plus anything post delivery for 2 months. Baby is covered 100% no matter how long she has to be there or what she needs including Pedi visit then she will get her own insurance. We know already that she will spend about 5-7 days in NICU which will be covered under my insurance. I have no idea how much a birth costs in my area but i live in a lower income semi rural area in MD so I'm assuming it is prob lower than most other parts of the country. I would be interested in finding it though if anyone happens to know.

And we bitch about paying for parking too. ;) When I see it written out like this, I realise how lucky we are in Canada.
This! I wandered into the thread out of curiosity. I'm shocked! H is still bitching about the parking costs from last time. I need to show this to him. Can't even fathom leaving the hospital with a bill...

Never ever be upset about your healthcare in Canada. Hold it close and pet it lovingly. Even a day trying to understand why you got a 5 thousand dollar bill for a hospital stay is a day too many.

I thought for sure i was going to get a bill for having a private room, but turns out the hospital in my city only has private rooms on the birthing floor. So conveniently, never saw a bill for that. The only expense this time around is the cost for circumcision. Man, I love Canada!
