Re: Wacky Wednesday

  • I have been craving an everything bagel with garlic herb cream cheese SO bad lately. And of course due to GD, I can't have it.... Even if I ate half it wouldn't be good enough for me. :/ Wah wah.

On a brighter note, I only have like 2 more Christmas presents to buy and maybe 4 to wrap?

We're celebrating starting next Friday with family from out of town, so I have to be ready almost a week earlier than normal.

Last night I made a batch of lemon crinkle cookies. I'm a little disappointed. The recipie only made 2 doz, and they're not very lemon-y.

  • I have a big meeting in a half an hour (I'm here while I'm waiting for my 15 copies of the 50 page presentation to finish printing).  I left my house by 6am after not seeing my kids last night or this morning.  I was working until I passed out last night.

Then?  I got pulled over on my way to work.  It was in a 30 MPH zone which is fine, but it's in an area that should probably be higher.  It's my fault, I totally realize it, but I apparently was going 50.  I totally bawled (not on purpose, I'm just so tired!!).  And it didn't get me out of anything.  DH suggested I contest it because he was driving towards me and thinks he may not have gotten the best read of my speed.  As soon as he turned around, I loooked down and I was going 10 over, but he claims I was 20 over.  There's a chance I was going 20 over, my brain was focused on getting to work and not on my speed.  Ugh.  Bad start to the day.  (And I am not actually contesting anything, DH is just overprotective)

  • Oh @kelbel527 that stinks. I've never been pulled over (FX) but I can't imagine already being stressed then having it happen. I hope works slows for you and your day gets better.

I'm mentally not here yet. My brain is still in vacation mode. I feel like my house looks like complete crap and I have family coming this weekend to celebrate Christmas. Not a single present is wrapped.

Due to DH's forced work schedule I have the morning off tomorrow. I'm so exicted to be able to stay home for a bit and catch up on things plus get some time with B. I've missed him and it makes me feel sad that I'm at work and he's sick. These are the kind of days I wish I was a SAHM.

  • Maya came and got in our bed at 4:30 this morning thinking it was morning. She has only done this one other time. I have no idea what she was thinking. I have to meet with my new boss for my new position today and I have to ask her for three days off after Christmas plus I need to come in late one day next week for Maya's preschool holiday concert. I hate to ask when I haven't even started yet but, with the holidays, Maya is out of school for the week after Christmas and I have to split the days off with DH and, of course, I can't miss her first preschool concert. I really hope she will be understanding. I'm super nervous about it.
  • Yesterday I ate a gazillion sweets, drank 225mg of caffeine not including the chocolate I ate, sat at a desk chair pretty much from 8am to 1:12am with probably an hour total of getting up to pee/grab food eat/bathe the kid, I overextended myself getting something from the cabinet, I carried a really heavy basket of laundry up 2 flights of stairs and pulled something, and I got a whopping 4 hours of sleep.

I feel like I failed miserably at taking care of myself yesterday.  I'm not being a good pregnant mom.  My feet were HUGELY swollen, and oh I didn't drink enough water.  Awesome, me!

  • Also can someone please tell me if I am supposed to address a senator as Mr. Smith or Senator Smith, and a state rep as Mr. Black or Representative Black?  I feel like I would say Senator Smith and Mr. Black, but that seems insulting to not use Mr. uniformly if they are in the same meeting, right?

  • I need to get shit done today, but I'm a grump because we've been stuck at home since Monday and DH is OOT until this afternoon. I think all I've managed to do was clean the couch and contact paper DD's new to us table and chairs. Right now I have a screaming sick baby and a glued to the tv toddler.

I think if you are asking for the days up front, that's actually better than accepting the position and then looking for days off. Most bosses understand the holidays are a busy time, and if school is closed, school is closed. What are you going to do?

  • Okay, so let me know if this would bother you.

There are 6 people in my office including myself.  We were discussing what we wanted to do as an office Christmas party, and they were all "Let's do a wine and food pairing dinner".  So I said that the city club we belong to does those, and it would probably be pretty cheap.

I had the food and beverage director at the club send over a menu, and it was a 5 course meal with wine pairing for $33.95 per person including tip.  I sent the menu around to the office, and everyone was all on board, and wanted to invite spouses, fine.  The department would cover our meals, and we would just pay for our individual spouses.

So I email the woman at the club, confirming, and an hour later the other woman in my office comes out to talk to me and tell me that we need to change plans.

So I'm like okay, why?  And she said they decided it was too expensive to pay for spouses as well, because if they wanted an extra drink outside of the tasting, they could end up paying $50 (and let's be clear, this is for 2 meals).

So I'm like "Okay, that's fine."

...and she proceeds to say to me "We're from a different world than you, that's a lot of money for us."

...okay, but it's not like you didn't know the price, and also, you were the ones that wanted a nice dinner.

To me, nothing says, "I don't give a shit about my employees" than cheaping out on a christmas party for the SIX people in your office.  Last year, we had breakfast at IHOP that was also our staff meeting.

But really, I'm pissed about the "We're from a different world than you." comment.

  • So in passing on the drive home this weekend DH and I were talking about how much less stress it is for us without buying eachother gifts this year for Christmas. He mentioned something about me and 3 bows strategically placed and I laughed about it but now I'm thinking I'll surprise him. How the heck do I get 2 small bows and a larger one stuck to me? Haha nice question right? I was thinking surprising him Christmas Eve, Eve when we get everything set up from Santa since we'll be celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve.

I would use Sen. and Rep.

  • I haven't been around much due to school and work full time.  But, here I am lurking away!  I have two finals today and I am so not motivated to take them.  Plus, I am so not ready for Christmas with a test on Monday and Wednesday next week.  Must get motivated!

  • Is 11am too early to eat my lunch?

Dude, there isn't a $4 glass of wine at Olive Garden.  She has a preconceived idea about this place and can't get past it.  I WANT WINE SO FREAKING BAD.  I can't wait until I can drink!

  • @bper that is a really unprofessional and inappropriate comment to make.  Also, last I checked.... a dinner at Applebees runs us $50 for two.
All of this @bper. Her comment was rude. Did she offer another suggestion?

  • @bper Tell her that those on a budget should not overindulge on alcohol.  Water is free.

I'd remove myself from any of the planning.  I don't think you're going to go to dinner anywhere except a diner and get a better deal than that.  The fact that that amount included a full course meal, wine, and tip is amazing.
Or tell her she can leave her spouse home, lol.

  • What do we get SD's boyfriend for Christmas? I have no idea what to buy a 20 year-old guy. We bought him a sweater last year, so I don't want to do that again. Help!

Ewww, @tinyhumantoe, that would skeeve me out that someone was touching my food. We used to have a woman in our building who was nicknamed The Crane because she would slink around and steal food. One time, she took half a sandwich off of someone's desk!
    .:dead:.

We were SUPPOSED to be leaving for Mexico today for our friends' wedding, but our babysitter (MIL) backed out on us so we had to cancel our trip. Every one of our friends (it seems) is going, so everyone is posting pics of them leaving, and views from their hotel rooms. I'm a Bitter Barbara this morning.

Oh sucky. What was her reasoning? I would have ugly cried had my parents backed out on us.

  • I feel bad not sending a Christmas card.. I keep dropping things I want to do because it's giving me stress and that's not what I want either. Wish I had a better balance and let go of things easier. I am the only one setting my expectations.

I feel so crunched for time because I'm not done shopping nor have I wrapped anything!

Also, This pregnancy has made me a super crier. Like the drop of a hat. It's crazy. I feel nuts.

What? Did she just change her mind, or is there a legit reason for canceling on you last minute?

While using Mr is correct, since you are trying to get favors done I would use Senator and Congressman (or Rep but I prefer Congressman). You can do a little research and see what people use while interviewing them. I bet they ask them before going on camera what they prefer to be called.

ETA: or do you have the email of a staff member? You can send them a quick note asking what they prefer to be addressed as during meetings, drinks to have on hand, that kind of thing.

This happened for our Director's meeting last week too.  They asked me my opinion on where we should go, I gave several options, varying from $25-$40 a person, they chose the higher end.

They do this because I'm really the only "local" in this office.

I made a reservation at the nicer restaurant, that they then told me to cancel.  We ended up doing hibachi which was nice, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, and then today I was told it was too expensive and not conducive to conversation between everyone.  Good luck finding a table anywhere that seats 14 people and allows you to talk to anyone beyond who is sitting within 5 feet of you.

Hibachi is great for large groups. I had my 30th birthday at one that sat 16 and it was so fun. I agree to just back out of everything now and let someone else do the work.

That was my thought too.  Most restaurants would put you at 2 tables for such a large group.

    Whatever.  I hate this place.

  • @BeebopandBuddy:  20yr old dude?  How about a GC to Ticketmaster, or tickets to something that's coming up that maybe SD has mentioned?  Or, gas cards are always good because holy crap is gas expensive.

@BPer, We don't have a Christmas party, but my DH's is at a very nice, fancy, schmancy country club in our area.  We have such an awesome meal (and open bar, hence how I've gotten pregnant twice after attending it...) that if we had to pay, I'd pay $50 or more!  Cheap bastards.  I'd back out of the planning and set your bar realllllly low.  If it's IHOP again, maybe you could bring a flask.

I have 4 emails today from people who have now failed out of nursing at whatever school they're at and want to come by me.  In January.  And they have to use financial aid.  Thank God they've all emailed me.  If it were over the phone, I would have probably laughed, and then felt bad about it.

  • @BPer, while her comment was rude, maybe she was embarrassed that such a meal *might* put her and her husband in a tight spot. Maybe it is her preconceived notions that has put this fear in her, is there a way to get a menu of the wine prices? Just a thought, it may ease her mind. I'm sorry she was so snippy about it.
Well the thing is, the food and wine pairing dinner, was her idea.

I sent around the menu with the pricing per person, and she said "That's not bad at all."

And it was her idea to invite spouses.  Otherwise the whole thing would be covered.
