Make-up during delivery

Re: Make-up during delivery

  • I don't ever wear makeup either, so not really an issue.

  • I'm amazed at the number of people planning on flat ironing their hair, but maybe that's because my hair is super thick and curly so flat ironing is about a 45 minute process for me.  I can't imagine holding a hot iron near my head while having a contraction.

If I go into labor in the middle of the night again I'm not putting on any makeup.  If I'm leaving in the middle of the day (and my contractions aren't too crazy) I might put on some concealer and waterproof mascara.

  • I think I've been more concerned with how fresh my brazilian will be, lol! As others have said, if I happen to have it on from the day, great - otherwise, the most I will do afterwards is lipgloss and mascara...
  • I would say it depends on how I'm feeling in the beginning stages of labour and what time it is haha. I am bringing a small makeup bag to the hospital for after though if/when I feel like putting some on.
  • @erobbins09, were we separated at birth? EVERY thing you said about your hair rings true for mine as well!

I had thought about the whole "hair and make-up thing" as well but I've never thought about the "shower and shave thing"... Now that its been mentioned I will probably take a shower and shave before doing my hair and makeup! I only wash my hair twice a week so I may get lucky and it will be mostly styled anyway if she decides she wants to be nice to me.

I always wear base make-up and it only takes 15 minutes tops to slap on so I don't see why I wouldn't put some on... however, like PP's have said, ask me again in 10 weeks and we'll see what my answer is then. I just know I've looked at some post-birth photos and thought, "oh darling a little foundation would have done wonders..." I don't want people thinking that about me!

  • Can I ask about those people who chose the first option? Why would you purposely take off your makeup before labor? Just so it doesn't get smudged?
  • flyster said:

i wear pretty light makeup day to day that takes about 5 minutes to put on.  I'll probably do my basic, or already have it on.

Contacts though....if you go into Labor over night would you put in your contacts? I am pretty bind and wear them everday so thats something I think I would take the time for, especially because I hate excersizing with glasses on.   If you end up with a c section to they have to take them out? I glasses will be in hospital bag just in case.
I usually wear contacts too but I did not put them in when I was induced with my 1st daughter. I'm pretty sure they told me not to wear them. But yes, if you have a c section you can definately not have contacts in. They will make you take them out.
  • I'll be putting on make up if it isn't already on. Why not, it only take me a 5 minutes. My make up routine is super causal during the day. Obviously I won't be doing a smokey eye...

I have this mascara that is waterproof and smearproof because it creates little 'tubes' over your eyelashes. It's by Blinc. Pretty pumped I have an excuse to use it besides on the water in the summer.

Thanks i should ask my Dr about ut. I remembered hearing at some n point that you can't wear contacts for any surgery although I honestly wasn't sure if that was true.

    Yep, that's true.
  • I don't leave the house without basic makeup. I just feel better with it on. Call it a confidence issue or whatever- my mom is the same way. I never put on the works (shadows, eyeliner, lip liner, etc.) or anything crazy- but basic makeup is a must. If I get caught without it- I'll probably ask my mom to help me spruce up after delivery! Lol my hair however is thick and can be unpredictable! I won't worry as much about that! I'm sure no matter what- it really doesn't matter. In the end, a healthy baby means a happy mom!
  • With DS, I went into labor at 2 am. I barely brushed my teeth before leaving for the hospital. DH and I both thought it was false alarm. Ha, yeah right. I did shower, but barely combed through my brows and dried my hair at the hospital. At that point, the contractions were too strong and I really didn't care. We were looking at pics the other and I was holding DS right after he came out. My face was HUGE! I was so swollen. I pushed hard for 2.5 hours. My mom said, "yeah, I thought your brain was going to come out before C did!" With that being said, I do wish I had my eyebrows filled in but it was a nice, in the moment, raw pic.

I do get ready everyday, so if I go into labor during the day, I will be ready. If not, no big deal. I'll probably do my eyebrows this time, maybe some lip stain, waterproof mascara and put my hair in a bun. At the end of it all, you will need another shower anyway.

After that first shower, you will feel so good. That's when I did the minimal makeup and hair. I wanted to look good when visitors started coming in, but not like I was getting ready for a night out.

  • I wear makeup maybe 4 times a year, and this will not be one of those times. Also, I wouldn't worry about how you look in the pictures. Trust me, no one even sees you anymore once baby gets here. All they see is the cute baby.

  • Well now I'm hoping I just go into labor from work so I can be all makeup and hair done! I know some don't seem to care, but I'm on the "look good, feel good" train during delivery. Now... I normally get waxed, but have heard it hurts more while pregnant.. Maybe I'll suck it up and go get a Brazilian and have legs waxed as well.

I had a full Brazilian a couple weeks before I have birth last time. It did hurt, but it wasn't terrible and I'm so glad I did it. Take a Tylenol about an hour before.
  • I'll bring makeup for pictures afterwards but unless I go into labor on a day I happened to put on makeup, I won't be wearing any. With DS I labored at home for 12 hours and not once did I think about putting on makeup because I was so uncomfortable. My face was so puffy from the IV that I don't think makeup would have made a difference anyway.

  • I've definitely already thought about my hair. I'll be putting it up in victory rolls so it will be up and out of the way. As a makeup artist I do wear makeup most every day and I will probably do my makeup the day of. It makes me feel better and I'm sure I will appreciate it when it comes to pictures. I may use my airbrush machine on myself....

My contacts were never discussed. I wore them during the c-section.

I'm sure every place is different. My hospital is pretty strict. Although it is a high risk facility. They won't let me wear contacts during surgery because it can lead to corneal abrasions. They won't let me wear jewlry because of possible swelling. And they will make me take off any make up because the anesthesiologist watches my skin color during the procedure. They make me take my tongue ring out as soon as I get there in case they have to intubate if something goes wrong. They wipe my whole body down to sanitize it before hand and make my husband be completely sanitized before he can come in the operating room. Like I said, pretty strict.
  • I grudgingly put on minimal amounts of makeup for work, but pretty much never wear it on the weekend.  I can't imagine that I'll want to put it on for birthing my child, but who knows?  Anyone who has the inclination and energy...more power to ya.

  • Ok so depending on how well I am able to identify real contractions and deal with the pain, I would like to wash and dry my hair, and apply some make-up. Have also noted shaving legs and bikini waxing. Is there anything else we should be doing in the time before we need to get to the hospital, providing bags are already packed etc? Eating? Resting?
    Any tips from STMs?

You seriously think you will have time to do all that before the contractions get bad?

I was in 9 hours of labor and they where pretty bad from the start with my daughter. I don't see it possible you having enough time for all of those things while your contractions get closer together and stronger. Why not just wax your legs and bikini a week or so in advance?

  • As for makeup I can care less! Yea pics will be taken, but I doubt people will be looking at me, if so I never wear makeup unless going somewhere nicer.
I plan on going to the spa close by about a week before for a leg, bikini, and underarm wax though!
  • I don't wear much makeup as it is, but I'll probably bring some with me for photos a day or so after the birth. When I had DS, I was laboring all day and night before having an emergency c/s, so I was swollen from the if fluids and looked like crap. This time, the RCS is scheduled, so I'll shower and do my hair before I go in. I might do some light mascara, but that may be the extent of it. Looking back on my photos from DS, I will definitely brush my hair this time around :-p

I do recommend getting a small bite before you go. Many places won't let you eat anything but ice chips until birth. 12 hours without food is rough especially when the nurse comes back from her lunch break to give you the dinner order sheet so they can put it in the fridge for you just in case.

Getting pretty is just a nice bonus if you feel like you have time.

  • @psychobutthead‌ Fast forward to me in labour and i'll probably be like, screw this s***! I was planning on waxing in advance but this is my emergency plan in case baby is early/late :)

@jennjilljoite‌ thanks for the tip, i had heard about the ice chips and food is sounding like a priority. I'm cranky enough when i'm hungry, i don't think anyone needs to see hangry in labour me :)

I'm definitely getting a Brazilian and having my legs waxed before labour. Mostly for after birth. With all that bleeding it just makes me feel cleaner and God knows it'll be a month before I shave my legs. So glad baby's due in February!! My other two were born in July and I HAD to shave every few days 'cause it was so hot. photo D9E03858-9EF3-4B21-8976-D76784DFD0D3.gif
If you don't mind my asking, did you have brazilians done before your other births?   I am trying to decide if I can do it while pregnant, or if the stress and adrenaline will be too much.  I've had it done before numerous times, but it's always a mental and physical struggle for me.  I really HATE them.   Alas you can not argue with the results, or the fact that I can't even see my vagina/pubic area anymore, so therein lies the dilemma.
  • My hair will look the best it can in a messy bun and I'm sticking to my tinted moisturizer because I'm convinced I'll look like RuPaul's worst nightmare after pushing a giant baby out of my vagina.
