Bostonchellehonkytonk_kid ! I just keep reading about all these interviews I'm supposed to do and wanted a little reassurance. I think I will meet with the second one and if they don't wow me I'll go with the first. I might be able to go to their open house at some point in either jan. or feb., we'll see. I just went to a big hospital practice when I was a kid and I turned out fine, so I'm not going to stress too much. Like you said, we can always switch.
Yeah, I never interviewed a pedi. We picked the closest to us from a list the midwives gave me. Decide what is most important to you- location, appointment availability, etc- and go from there. I'm not concerned about clicking 100% with a pedi or getting parenting advice, I want vaccines, fast sick appointments, and well checks, and to carry on with our lives
@clobert - keep in mind that what you choose now is not set in stone. If you aren't happy with the care you receive, you should be able to change to another pediatrician who accepts your insurance fairly easily.
I've chosen my pediatric practice based on the fact it has 24/7 urgent care and they're known to be helpful on the phone. I'll pick a specific doctor after meeting the pediatricians in the team at their January open house. If we hate them, we'll go back to the drawing board, but for now, we think the most important aspects of care are covered.
So we have a situation I didn't necessarily read on here and wanted opinions from STMs. We live in a small community about an hrs drive from the nearest large city (where my OB is as well as the hospital I am delivering at). My DH and I are discussing Pedi care for the baby, and a few local friends have told us that their kids see a General Practitioner in our town - who is GREAT, but doesn't necessarily specialize in infants/pediatric care. That seems OK in theory - esp being close for frequent baby appointments / sickness. Our other option comes HIGHLY recommended - but is almost an hour drive from us, but is a Pediatrician. What (in your opinion) is more important - location or specialization? What would y'all do?!

If you're in that small of a town, it's likely that the family practice doc sees quite a few pediatric patients and so has sufficient pediatric experience. Are your friends happy with her/him? I would do that.
Again, you can always switch if you end up (hopefully not!) needing more specialized pediatric care.
I actually have kaiser too and my experience has been good so far. I think like all places there will be variety of doctors. I saw an infertility doctor who I didn't care for--he didn't seem interested in helping us but I switched to another one and he was much more caring and invested. You can look online at your hospitals doctors and read bios that's how I found my family doctor and I like her so we will probably stick with her for baby. The only thing that's annoying at least at my hospital is the waiting time--some times I've waited an hour from my appt time until I was seen
Well I don't know if this goes for all doctors, I'm sure it doesn't. But my doctor is also a pediatrician and I really like him so I stuck with him. So maybe you could check that out. I would ask other women you know who go to the same clinic as you and find out what they say about their child's pediatrician.
I'm glad this was bumped because I've been waffling on whether or not to just stick with my family med doc or get a pediatrician. I grew up going to our family doc, and even though I work for a health system, am having trouble deciding on why I should get a pediatrician. Has anyone tried both with kids?

This is our situation. I don't see an issue with it. They see just as many kids as they do adults and are well educated. And they know when the right time to send you to a specialist is. Unless there was a red flag about the doctor in general, I wouldn't hesitate to use them. Growing up I never had a pedi (also from a small town) and I was actually a sick kid in and out of the hospital a lot. I actually felt I got better care from our family doc over the pedi because they knew me and my family a lot better. He even did a house call one time!
