Need replacement stone for ring (NBR)

edited December 2014 in May 2015 Moms
Back in April my MIL let me borrow a cocktail ring for a party.  Unfortunately, the stone fell out that night, and was lost.

Fast  forward to this week and my MIL asks the hubs if she can have the ring back so she can wear it for a party (whoops).  We need to replace the stone, but I have no idea where to even go.

Below is a link to what the ring looked like.  The center stone is what is missing.  It's not a diamond, just costume jewelry, I think.  Any suggestions?

  • Even though I'm not entirely sure...I would be that your local jewelers would be a good start since they seem to cater more personally than a larger chain would. That would be my first stop. I have to get some stones replaced in a ring my mom passed down to me from my Grandmother and that was going to be my first stop.

  • I second what @robotpcr‌ suggested.
Personally I'd feel better with the truth out there, not worrying if she'll notice there's a different stone.
    Good luck!

  • oh no no... i was going to tell her the truth, I wasn't going to try to pull one over on her!  hahah, I should have put that in there.  But I do want to replace the stone, either way.

Google "costume jewelry repair". A few places came up in my area. They are probably more specialized than a regular jewelry store that deals with diamonds.

Did you tell her the stone fell out?  I'd do that and tell her you want to either replace it or buy a whole new one.  It might be cheaper just to do the latter if it's costume jewelry.  Otherwise the only thing I can think of is to take it to a jeweler (I had an opal replaced in a necklace once) but not sure if they can fix costume jewelry.

I second this. She may also think it's cheaper/less of a hassle to buy a new, similar ring.

  • Ditto everyone else - let her know what happened, and that you're happy to either look for a replacement stone or to buy a new ring.  I'm guessing if the ring didn't have any particular sentimental value, it's probably easier to just buy a new, similar ring.
