What To Pack In Our D-Day "Its Effing Go Time!!" Bags....

So were getting closer to D-Day!

Something I have been wondering lately is, What should I pack in my bag to bring to the hospital with me?

Suggestions and helpful tips from any S(+)TMs on what we should bring to the hospital (or where ever you are giving birth at) with us?

I know we need to pack babies coming home outfit but should we bring hygiene things? Or maybe extra clothes for us? Anything else?

Anything you brought that you thought you would need but didn't? Anything you wish you had brought or that you made your SO run home and get for you?

Re: What To Pack In Our D-Day "Its Effing Go Time!!" Bags....

  • Loading the player...
  • Last time literally brought nothing but clothes for me to go home in and for baby to go home in. This time I hope to bring some additional things like phone charger, camera, snacks because hospital food sucks! And idk, there's not really much you need it's more of what you want to make you more comfortable.
  • They had some tips during our hospital tour, including packing two bags - a labor/delivery bag and a recovery bag. Basics for labor bag were phones and chargers, camera, snacks for dad/support team, socks and lip balm for mom, etc.

Recovery bag included a robe for mom, going home clothes for mom (stuff that fit around 6 months pregnant), baby clothes (a first picture outfit and a going home outfit), car seat, blanket for baby (they made a big deal that the hospital receiving blankets can't be removed from the hospital), toiletries for mom, etc.

We live about 15 minutes from the hospital, so I figure H or a family member can bring us stuff we forget.
  • I wasn't kidding when I said I was clueless, so queue the stupid questions from me startingggg now...

    1) I am assuming we need to have the carseat in the car, fitted for newborn, ready to rock, correct?
    2) Do we need a blanket or something for the car ride home? (I live in TX- it'll probably be about 60 degrees out)
    3) For baby outfit home, should that include a little hat for warmth?
    4) I know my hospital provides a breast pump there if needed but should I bring my own? I shouldn't need it right? (hoping to feed LO directly)
    5) I'm assuming I'd also need hygiene things like deodorant and a comb/toothbrush etc? I guess my length of stay depends on how the delivery goes.

I think that's it for me. Other than the general experience questions of:

    1) on average how long was your post-delivery stay?
    2) Did SO end up spending the night and if so, does he need to bring things?

  • @toastercat see that's one of the things I was wondering. I am really clueless as to how long I will spend in the hospital myself (baby girl will be there 5-7 days regardless because of a medication I am on) and I know from being there previously for an illness I was not allowed to not have a hospital gown on so I wasn't sure if they would let me wear my own clothes or not. Or maybe it varies by hospital or is different for pregnancy? I live in sweatpants and tshirts so my going to and coming home clothes will most def be sweatpants and a tshirt but wasn't sure if they would let me wear them if I end up with an extended hospital stay?

  • @lawsonellis as to your first question I am going to have to say that I think the answer to this will vary on your hospital as to their procedures. What I mean is there is only 1 hospital is the county that I live in and i have asked this question to people who have delivered there and also elsewhere because I wanted to go to the fire station and have them put mine in correctly for me (most stations will do this for you for free). At the hospital I am giving birth at they require you to bring the car seat inside (somewhere) and then the baby has to sit in it for a full 45 minutes before you leave. Why they do this I have absolutely no idea but when I asked people who have delivered elsewhere they said they just had to have it installed in the car. So I would def ask the hospital when you get a chance.

@darbie914 aww im sorry about your hospital sucking like that. The hospital I am going to is almost brand new and all rooms are private they even have little pull out couches for overnight guests. I can not imagine having to share a room like that with someone right after giving birth. I feel like that is the time when privacy is needed the most. Especially for you both to be able to bond with the baby. Are you delivering at the same hospital again?

  • The things aside from the obvious like toiletries and clothes that people have told me are:

underwear and pjs in dark colors or ones that you are okay with tossing...
    slipper socks
food/snacks (especially for birth support people)
a big towel, again in dark color or one that you don't care about - hospital towels are small (or so I'm told)

No, thank goodness!  The hospital I'm going to is so much better than the last one.  I'm hoping for a much better experience this time around.
oh that's great. Like I would literally consider traveling (if possible) just to avoid a situation like that

  • Something I just thought about from personal experience with forgetting this when going places. If you wear contacts then don't forget contact solution and your contact case! There is nothing worse than having to deal with blurry contacts. Obviously your back up glasses as well but I absolutely hate hate HATE wearing my glasses, I only put up with them at night when I take my contacts out. But I cant imagine being anymore annoyed than forgetting contact solution and glasses and not being able to see anything!

  • This has already been insanely helpful. Thanks ladies!! (starred this thread!)
  • FTM here too! I have a question: should we pack anything different/extra in case we end up with a c section? Will they give me pain meds or do I bring Tylenol?
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • DH was able to spend the night when I had dd but we had to bring him his own blanket and pillow. Maybe something you could ask the hospital. One thing I didn't bring last time was shampoo and conditioner. About a half hour after having dd I was to shower to get cleaned up and my hair was a disaster because all the hopistal had was gross shampoo/body wash combo.
I also brought a couple outfits for baby. As soon as she was bathed I put her in a sleeper I brought her. Wasn't a fan of the white nighty type things my hospital supplies.
Our hospital doesn't have disposable wipes either. They use something similar to face cloths so I brought my own wipes. I also didn't like staying in a hospital gown so I brought extra comfy clothes for myself. As soon as my iv was out I got out of the hospital gowns and into my own clothes.
  • I was thinking about bringing a cooler...anyone done that or heard of anyone doing that?
  • I'm a FTM, so I have no clue if this will be helpful or not, but I recently decided I want the kind of pajamas that button down the front, for after delivery (hospital & home).  I figure they may keep me warm and make my boobs available for feeding.

What type of "bag" do you bring? Is it a rolling, carry-on suitcase type of thing? Or overnight duffle bag?
    Vera Bradley duffel :)
That's what I'm bringing too! Those things are amazing. I've had mine for 12 years and it's just like it was when I got it.
  • IMO yoga pants are a necessity- they help to hold the ice, the pads etc in where you want/need them if you have a vaginal birth. Also granny underpants (joy!). I don't bring clothes for baby aside from a going home outfit- they will give you an undershirt, blankets, diapers.

Leave a little extra room in a bag so you can take extra diapers, undershirts and supplies for you home from the hospital (my hospital is quite generous).
  • Wow this has been really great. I have a very "newbie" question. Can someone please explain to me what the water bottle is for after you give birth? I have seen a lot of people posting about using the water bottle after giving birth. What is that for?? From what I can guess from reading it might have something to do with helping to pee....Thanks!!

From friends who've had vaginal births, the area is extremely sore and tender after giving birth.  The water bottle is used to clean yourself off after you pee and also to help with the stinging from the urine as you pee.  Also, they said that the warm water felt amazing.
Awl ok yea this is kinda what I had in mind but yea I can see how pushing a baby out of your vagina can make things a tab bit sore and uncomfortable down there. I really think that is my biggest labor fear, how my vagina is going to feel afterwards. Im not even scared of the labor pains or contractions or anything, nope, just my sore vagina lol

The peri bottle. It was my #1 favorite thing I brought home from the hospital. After a vaginal delivery, especially with any tearing, the last thing you want to do is take a dry piece of TP and WIPE after you use the restroom. The water is very soothing, helps keep the area clean (you are a bleeding mess for a while after) and then you dab dry with TP instead of traditional wipe. Fun times.
    Wonderful! X_X

Oh, so this was a tip that was passed down from friends who had kids prior to me having DD.  I didn't use it but apparently a lot of people have.

The rolling bassinet cart thing that the nurses wheel into your room with the baby on it is typically stocked with lots of things.  Extra hospital blankets, ready-to-eat bottles of formula (the small ones), pacifiers, diapers, etc.  They would basically raid the cart and stuff their duffel bags full of the goodies because apparently the carts get restocked each time baby leaves the rooms and comes back.  I remember seeing most of these things but didn't take any.  Except the blue nasal bulb syringe.  I did take that.

I took everything.  Including the bic pen.  I asked for some extra ice pack thingies and mesh underwear too - so helpful at home.

This. My nursing staff insisted I take everything in the cart, so I did. Diapers, wipes, nasal bulb, receiving blankets. Let's face it, insurance pays enough money for you to be there..might as well leave with a goody bag :) they also gave me that warm water squeeze bottle to squirt myself down there (can we STMs just take a moment to reminisce in what a godsend that thing is?), witch hazel pads, nursing pads etc. And the volunteers at the hospital knit winter hats for babies..not always the cutest but a super nice gesture. Side note about car seats: I'm honestly not sure if it's every hospital or just mine, but they actually employee car seat technicians who are incredibly knowledgeable and will help you make sure that you're leaving with baby's car seat safely installed
  • Oh I just remembered. My hospital had a DVD player. We brought a couple movies that I thought I might watch during labor (LOL was I clueless?!) but...we did end up watching a movie one of the nights we were at the hospital. It was pretty boring after visitors left and we were just sitting in this one room for 48 hours. It was nice to have the movie option, so something to consider if your hospital provides tv/dvd players in rooms.

  • Things I will be bringing this time that I wish I had last time:
SNACKS. A variety of them. The food was good, but I was always hungry!!
Baby wipes. We had to use weird pads that we moistened in the sink.
A robe. Didn't mind being in the hospital gown, but this ain't my first rodeo.
    For my husband:
    A comfy pillow.
Food. We didn't want to pay $16 a plate for him to eat hospital food.
  • I used depends to get to the hospital after my water broke and then ended up using them after with a pad. You can rip them off so you don't have to bend to take them off. My nurse taught me to line the pads with tucks pads and that was awesome! So have extra tucks (witch hazel) pads. Also I had a bad tear so I used extra gauze. At night I had a harder time getting Motrin than in the daytime. I may bring my own this time even though you aren't supposed to. My husband was freezing in L&D and I wouldn't let them turn off the air, so a down jacket for him. The socks at the hospital didn't fit me (I have smallish feet) so I'm going to bring my own with grips on the bottom. Def a big towel!!! And an extra pillow. My feet were more swollen after than before so flip flops or bigger shoes.
  • @saltyfins‌ yea i thought about waiting but seeing as how we have already had a few births i didn't think it was too early. Hell it will prob get brought up again later on anyway the way this board goes sometimes lol

It was amazing and helped me feel so much better.

That's awesome i will Def be getting that lol its pretty inexpensive too. Seriously i would pay 100$ for something that makes my vag feel better lol as i mentioned before. Im not even scared of labor just terrified of how uncomfortable i might be after lol

Someone brought this up on my mom group on FB. My suggestions were:

    Toiletries for you and DH/SO.
    Chargers, camera, laptop/tablet/cell phone
Comfy clothing that you don't mind getting blood etc. on- yoga pants, a nursing tank and a robe.
A Boppy-Those beds are uncomfortable, and if you're nursing/feeding a newborn, you need support.
Snacks/change- they only feed you 3x a day, and change for vending machines and bringing snacks were nice to have.
    A coming home outfit
    Optional:
    Swaddler
Nursing pads (hospitals give them to you, but if you want a specific kind, bring them.)
Maxi pads(^^same thing, buy the ultra absorbent, overnight kind)
Panties that you don't mind getting messed up.

Also, everything in your room is up for grabs. Take ALL of it. Those nose suckers, swaddling blankets, etc.

And, if you plan to bf, ask for their lanolin. You'll thank me later. That stuff is magic, and nothing else is better.

  • @WAMOM‌ lol no i haven't taken a tour mostly cuz i have already been to the L&D unit at our hospital with friends kids so i didn't even think about doing one but i might actually look into it. Haha and i was just kidding about paying 100$ for something. The spray that was just recommended on this thread is only 8$ and she said it works really well so for 8$ im willing to try it! I feel good about the hospital im delivering at. It is brand new just built 2 years ago so I'm hoping they are pretty up to date with the comforts i might need...i hope lol

I had 1 second degree tear (required a few stitches), and 1, 1st degree, and I think by 3-4 weeks it started to look somewhat normal. By 6-7 weeks I was totally fine. I think by 4 weeks the bleeding stopped.
