How did you tell your spouse/SO?

How did you break the news to your spouse or significant other? How did they take it? How did you/do you plan to announce pregnancy on Facebook, to family and friends etc.? I got my BFP yesterday and planned to tell my husband tonight by making his favorite meal and putting it on a plate that says "we're pregnant". I also have a little box full of a few neutral onesies and the pregnancy test in a ribbon. I plan on having my sister secretly film it. We have been trying for over 18 months and after three rounds of clomid and a diagnosis of PCOS this is a pretty big deal for us!! I plan to announce on Facebook/family by posting a pic of my 2 year old in a big brother shirt with a chalkboard checklist behind him. I've obviously had a lot of time to think about this lol :) I wanna hear your plans!

Re: How did you tell your spouse/SO?

  • Ours was a surprise. I took the test expecting a negative. Was just taking it to shut my husband up. Well joke was on me. I about died...he was on the phone with his friend and I ran into the living room waving the test around and then dropped to the floor in shock and tears...not how I imagined telling him. I wanted to do something cute like you're doing!

  • It was a total shock. He's away for a few months so I had to tell him on Skype. I could see it wasn't registering so waved the pregnancy test at the screen. He said "oh, well. We were going to try and have a go next Year anyway". Then shouted to his friend "I'm a dad!" Lol.

We had just started trying so when I peed on the test that morning, and saw the digital read out of "pregnant", I was in shock! I grabbed it and ran into the livingroom where he was putzing with his ice fishing gear. I went up to him, showed him the test, our shocked eyes met and tears with a giant hug. Love him!

  • I had gotten up earlier than him an POAS and he didn't know that I was testing. I wasn't expecting it to be positive but we had just started trying and I was going out of town that weekend to visit a friend, which usually involved a lot of drinking and smoking so I thought I should double check before my trip. When I saw the positive, I couldn't believe it. I climbed into bed next to him and he woke up and mumbled something. I told him that I was pregnant and he asked if I was joking. Once he realized that this was real, he freaked out a bit, but he was happy
  • We had just started trying, and he didn't know I was testing that morning when I woke up early and got a BFP (He had no idea about my cycles because I didn't want us to feel any pressure yet). When he woke up, I surprised him with homemade cookies and a card that said "good guys make great dads." He was in shock when he first saw the card, then started crying. It was a great moment!
  • He made breakfast, I took the test. I called him back in the bedroom and showed him the peestick, so DS didn't hear right away.

  • I went out and picked up an adorable locally-printed onesie with a sweetpea on it, and a book called Daddy Kisses.I wrapped it all up and made a card that said "Guess what?" on the front and on the inside had a photo collage of me with the test (photos taken just moments after I saw the BFP so you can imagine my expression) and the words "Holy Shit."

He said "Really?!" a few times, and welled up. And then giggled, and we had some hugs. It felt really good. :)

  • I got up to pee at 2 am and wanted to test with FMU that morning so at 2 am I took the test.  I made DH get up and double check that there was a line and I wasn't hallucinating.  I scared the shit out of him waking him at 2 to come look at a pregnancy test.  He obviously knew we were trying so he was just scared when I woke him up.  He was very happy, but after that neither of us could go back to sleep.

Neither one of us could get back to sleep either, but I waited until 5ish to wake him up.
  • I had been obsessing over POAS, so I took one while I was on a business trip out of town. I saved it because I thought I saw the faintest of lines. When I got home that night, DH was already in bed. I handed him the test, he said "Is it positive?" I said yes and he said "Good, let's keep 'em coming..." as he rolled over and went back to sleep. Totally anticlimactic. The next day I took a digi and showed him and again he seemed un-phased. He just takes time to absorb the news and get excited. By the end of the weekend he was beaming.

It was a really faint line so I wanted to make sure it was really there since I was testing pretty early.  I would have waited till later to test, but I couldn't hold it anymore.

I've never seen him hop off the couch that fast in my life. Lol! Kisses and hugs all around.

I left the THREE positive tests on the counter in the bathroom (he always goes straight to the bathroom to wash up after work)

He came out laughing and asked if I left them on purpose. Wasn't really a surprise, we were trying for a few months.

We will probably do something with our christmas card and after sending them out, I'll upload it to facebook too.

edited to add: Everybody knows already... DH can't keep his mouth shut to save his life lol

  • Oh gosh...all this cuteness makes me cry lol. :-) we have been trying for three years now. With the first one I found out right before x mas, so I bought a onesie saying "I love my daddy", wrapped it, and put it under an x mas tree. I told him I have an early Xmas gift for him, and he can open it that night. He was speechless, and then asked a few times if I was sure...hugs and kisses followed. That dream ended 11 weeks later. With this one, we did an IVF. I peed on a stick, and was so excited I couldn't hold it to make it a cute announcement. I marched into our bedroom proudly holding the stick up like Lady Liberty...he said- well, yeah, what were you expecting, we saw it happen on a screen (referring to the IVF procedure). So...matter of fact lol. Out of everybody, it seems that only I am surprised that the IVF worked the first time,

  • I took the test on a Sunday morning before church while hubby was in the living room. Every November our church goes on a 5 week fast which was starting the next day so when the test came back positive I just yelled to him "Babe I can't fast, the baby is gonna be hungry ". He screamed "WHAT?! " and paced the house for about 10 minutes.
  • My period was late but it still wasn't back to normal from weaning my daughter so I was convinced I wasn't pregnant. I took the test just to have proof and about fell over when it said pregnant. I sent the pic to my husband and said guess we weren't as careful as we thought. He replied with "f me". But he did really do well helping calm me down and reassure me that this is really a big blessing and we can do it.

  • We were out for a nice dinner and when the bread came, my husband started to butter his and said to me "Aren't you having any?" and I casually said "No, I'm good.  I've got a bun in the oven"  he said "really??? really??? I want to come over and squeeze you but that would look so weird right now"  (it was a quiet intimate restaurant).

With DS, he came home from being away for the weekend and I left two bowls of jelly beans on the table, one pink and one blue.  He walks in and says "oh, his and hers jelly beans.  What are we having a baby or something?"  I said yes. Again he said "really??" And he picked me up, swung me around, and then got on his knees and kissed my belly.
  • I woke up at 4:30 in the morning to test, he didn't know I was testing and he was waking up at 5:30 for work so I decided to do it before he left. We weren't trying and I was just making sure I wasn't, so I put the pee stick on the counter after I was done brushing my teeth I looked and saw two lines and started tearing up over surprise. I walked up to him and shook him a little bit and was like hey and he said huh and then I said look at this. I turned on my iPhone flashlight and pointed it at the HPT and he turned really quick to me and said no way and was smiling. Then he fell back asleep lol. But when he woke up he said he couldn't believe it and he was really excited :)

  • The first time I put prenatal vitamins, a stuffed animal, pacifiers and a card in a gift bag and gave it to him over lunch. We were both shocked and overjoyed. But I mc 3 days later. So this time around I just showed him the test. We tried not to get too excited but now that we've reached 9 weeks we're beyond excited! I have a picture of our husky next to a chalkboard that says, "mommy and daddy are getting me a human!" for when I decide to put it on facebook.
I love your idea and am super happy for you! Congrats and good luck!
  • We had been trying for three months but I really didn't think I was pregnant, even though my period was a few days late. My cycles are irregular, so that wasn't a red flag, and I was having a lot of cramping- which I had no idea was a pregnancy symptom. We had just decided to take a break from trying for a few months. So I grabbed a box of tests on my way back from running errands, just so I could confirm what I thought was obvious. Was NOT expecting to see that positive pop up immediately, dark and unquestionable. I was shaking and had a little mini panic attack. Snapped a photo and texted it to DH at work with the caption "umm...." He called me immediately, super exited. When we got off the phone I went outside and sat in the yard and just cried for like an hour, thinking "what have we done?" Haha.

  • I made DD a Big Sister shirt and sat there in the closet just staring at it and the test.  He came in and saw it all.

I had designed a cute beer bottle label that I was going to do originally, but his dad was in town and I didn't want to do it that way.  Oh well.  It was more than last time, where I ran in the bedroom shaking.

  • Oh. I forgot, for our FB announcement I took a picture of DD with a bunch of pumpkins and mums, with the chalkboard we used to do her monthly pictures. The board said "Thankful I'm not an only child anymore! June 2015" (we did a thanksgiving announcement). Turns out it should have said July 2015, but meh. Close enough.

  • I took the test knowing I wasn't pregnant. I was 3 weeks late but I had my DD four months ago, still was breastfeeding and only had one period since then so I knew my cycle was probably whacky at best. I had tested each of the previous weeks as well and they both were negative. As I was sitting on the toliet, convincing him it wasn't going to be positive - that I probably wouldn't be regular for a little while, I saw the second line. I stopped talking mid sentence and I remember putting my hand over my mouth. He started yelling from the bedroom and came in "Is it positive?? Is it positive?? I knew it!"

Nothing like sitting on the toliet to be memorable. He was happy that day, it took me a couple days before it sank it - not that I was unhappy just in shock.
  • I told him on his birthday (the day after I found out). I made a sign that read, "World's Best Dad" with "...of 2!" written on the back. As he was reading it, I took off our son's jacket to reveal his "Big Brother" t-shirt. It still took DH a few seconds... priceless!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • My cycles had been off for a few months (one was 6 weeks and the next was almost 2 months) so I fully expected to not be pregnant.  We had planned on celebrating my husband's birthday that night at a fancy bar and nice restaurant.  I woke up that morning and felt a little off.  I figured since we were going to a bar that night I should take a test JUST IN CASE.....and BAM: "pregnant" popped up on the little screen.  Then I took another test, because obviously the first one was wrong.  Nope, that was positive too.  So I got back in bed and poked my husband until he woke up.  I told him I have good news and bad news.  He asked for the bad news first.  I told him I couldnt drink at the bar that night.  He asked why.  I said well that's the good news, I'm pregnant.  He just looked at me and said "Well alright then".....and that was it.  He has started to slowly get more excited, just doesnt seem real to him yet.
  • The first test I took was negative (turns out it was expired). But I just had a feeling it was wrong, so I tested again. It came back with a faint line but I was doubting myself after the first negative, so I asked DH to look at it and asked him "how many lines do you see?" He paused, "well at least 2 obviously, but is there a third?"

I don't even remember what my response was, except a big smile and a little fear (being pgal does that to ya). DH was instantly happy once I told him 2 lines meant I was pregnant.

  • well, I was charting my cycles and my longest luteal phase has been 14 days.  On day 14 with a period no where in sight I decided to test and lo and behold it was positive.  My DH was trying to put DS down for a nap at the time.  I had bought a big brother shirt for him when we first started trying.  When I saw that second line, I couldn't wait.  I grabbed the shirt and took it in to my husband saying, look how cute this shirt is I got for DS.  He was looking at me crazy since he was obviously trying to get him to go to sleep.  But as soon as he read the shirt he jumped up and we hugged and kissed each other.

I absolutely love the crib eviction notice I thought about doing it with DS
  • I dont know why but I randomly took a test at 4:30am. I woke up DH and said "I got 2 lines!" and he said "GET THE F*** OUT OF HERE!!!" (in an excited way since we had been trying for a little). Then we both couldn't sleep out of excitement and watched 'Scrubs' until we passed out again.

  • I woke him up with a coffee mug that said"dad" on it and gave him a card saying I bought it's tix to a really amazing event on July 13, 2015. The card inside said great guys make amazing dads.

We had been trying and it was his bday week so he didn't get it and had to ask me if we were pregnant. I showed him the two lines and he said, is it wrong? So I handed him the digital and he told me if it's a boy we're naming it after my dad. Lol.

  • We have a wine that we've used to celebrate everything in our relationship-- date nights, engagement, wedding, honeymoon, every new house-- and I tracked down a non-alcoholic version last year and hid it. I had a label made that said "Of all that we've celebrated with Duplin, this one is my favorite: You + Me=3". I put the bottle in the fridge and when he came home from work I asked him to open it for me so I could have a drink before we left for dinner. He took the bottle out, completely missed the label, and said "it's non-alcoholic, gross." I said, "What does the label say?" He read it, then re-read it, and then looked at me with his mouth open and his eyes wide. He was ecstatic. We'd been waiting for a long time to start trying and he is over the moon.
  • @werehavingababy2233 - ah! Another White Christmas fan!! Yay!
Yes! I thought I was going to be the only one! We have the best! Also my DD loves it! She sings "Sister, sister" she is only 2 so that's all shes got! lol
  • I took the test while my DH was out deer hunting. I printed out a cute sign saying "Daddy's getting a hunting buddy!" I placed the test under the sign on his chair. We told our close family around Thanksgiving using a riddle with pictures "cranberries, pumpkin pie and turkey with gravy.... This thanksgiving we're thankful for our little baby" Due to a previous loss I'm waiting until after my first appointment to announce it to the facebook world.

We had been trying for a while. I took two tests before I told him.

    "I'm pregnant"
    "Really"
    "Yes"
    "Good..."

It took him awhile to warm up to the idea (same with our first) but now he has been really loving and supportive, especially when my nausea was really bad. I half-joke that H is a robot and it's hard for him to express normal human reactions.
We plan on telling the parents soon. I am trying to find a "Big Sister" shirt for DD and announcing on my extended family when we visit over Christmas break and then posting it on Facebook after.
