Car accident, broken wrist, possible surgery **UPDATE** (long)

Hey guys, so I know I don't post on here often but I do lurk quite a bit. Yesterday I was in a car accident and broke my wrist on the steering wheel beeping at the jerk who was running a red light, causing me to t-bone them at an intersection. It was the scariest day of my life- thank god baby was fine (I am almost 27 weeks) as that was what I was most worried about. But after a bunch of X-rays and re-setting the bone (OUCH) the doctor said I will probably need surgery. I am going back Wednesday to make sure (with more xrays) that it is absolutely necessary. I am SO nervous to go through surgery during pregnancy. Does anyone have any experience or advice with this?
Also, my husband and I just bought our first house and were supposed to move in this weekend. I am in so much pain and having such a hard time doing anything with this sling I have no idea how this will work. All the insurance stuff and not having a car is super stressful. I'm having a hard time staying positive here.

**UPDATE**
I had my follow up appointment today and it turns out I will be needing surgery. They have me scheduled for a week from today, Wednesday the 10th. I will be having it at the best baby hospital in the area and it's a minor surgery that only lasts an hour, but I am still very upset and worried. I just want the baby to be ok and I don't know how I'm going to get through this next week. I know everything will most likely turn out ok, I just hate that I'm putting my daughter through this

  • Man I am so sorry! Car accidents are scary, but I'm glad you walked away from it!

I have no experience with surgery during pregnancy, but I've known several women to go through it and typically lots of precautions are made for both mom and baby.

You're way past viability so they'll treat LO just as much as they treat you.

FX that everything turns out ok!

  • I'm sorry you went through such a scary event! I know insurance can be a nightmare to figure out. Hopefully your surgery is quick and easy, and the healing even quicker and easier.

Are they plating and screwing or just adding a couple of removable pins to help the bone set? Did you see an ortho or just the ER folks?

I have had both types of surgery on my wrist so I can't offer advice on being pregnant but on the surgery itself and recovery.

The resident who worked on me yesterday told me they would be using a plate a screws. I don't think he was 100% sure though because they want me to come back for more X-rays to see if I even need surgery, and a plate and screws sounds like the most drastic option

The car insurance is stressing me out big time! They are going to determine tomorrow if the car is totaled or can be repaired- I am praying for repairs so I don't have to pay off my car AND buy a new one. Ugh

Oh no! I'm so sorry! I have no experience with surgery but I was in a car accident a couple months ago and I know how scary it is to go through while pregnant.

I hope your recovery goes well and everything goes smoothly with insurance and everything.

Did the jerk who caused the accident apologize at least?

No she didn't! She was an older women (probably around 70) and acted as if I were inconveniencing her! And she didn't even get injured.... So rude

My mom just had this done to her ankle. She broke it a few months ago, and had surgery about 2 months ago, and is now 100%. She said the surgery took a few hours, and she really didn't feel any pain afterward, at any time, at all. She already had issues with her legs to begin with, and after PT she can actually walk better than she did previously. I hope that assures you a little bit.

Thank you that does help...if I could be 100% in 2 months I would be very happy

  • God bless you and your bundle. I hope everything works out for the best! I was in a horrible car accident two years ago totaled car thrown from the car bcuz of a deer very very scary! Car accidents are horrible... Just so happy you guys are okay! Try your hardest to stay positive so many ppl don't survive car accidents! Take it easy with the moving n stuff! Don't stress or hurt yourself any further... Keep us updated if surgery is needed! I'll be praying
  • @sam9232- I am so sorry you are going through this! I completely understand how you feel, as I was in an accident just this morning and spent the day attached to the fetal monitor. Thankfully the baby is ok, but it is definitely the most scary and helpless feeling.

Though I do not need surgery, I can imagine your anguish. Good luck with the house and your surgery. Sending positive thoughts your way!
  • Just wanted to say so sorry this happened, but what a relief that baby is ok.

  • Sorry to hear about the accident, but at least you and baby are doing good. What a horrible lady I would have lost you you caused this accident and I am inconvenienceing you?? Do you not see that I am pregnant?? Yup I would lose it..
No experience with surgery... But best of luck.
  • So sorry about your accident... I can't relate to that aspect (at least not while pregnant), but I am having surgery in a week that they normally use a general anesthetic for, so I'm meeting with the anesthesiologist tomorrow to discuss the alternatives. Just make sure if they do end up advising surgery that you get a chance to have a similar meeting and discuss all your options.

  • Sorry to hear about the accident. As for surgery, I had gall bladder surgery @17 weeks and another girl on here had an appendectomy around that Same time. The anesthesia puts you at risk for preterm labor, so they will generally have a high risk OB in the operating room and you get an ultrasound before and after. Don't get worried to see the lower heart rate after surgery. It is completely normal and sometimes they forget to tell you that.
  • Oh man, a car accident while pregnant is one of my big fears. T&P that if you need surgery it goes smoothly.

Thank goodness baby is okay and you're relatively alright! That's so scary! I wouldn't have been able to maintain composure and second contacting an attorney. FX the insurance stuff works out and that you won't need surgery. No experience with that, but positive vibes for you! GL and keep us updated!

  • No advice but sending you thoughts and prayers. How scary! I'm so glad to hear that you and the baby are okay. I too would have lost my mind on that lady!! I'm fuming just reading that she reacted that way! Best wishes!
  • Update bump
  • I'm glad you two are ok!  Pray the surgery goes well, and sorry to hear how the lady acted!  Wow!
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • I'm glad to hear you're doing well!  If it's any consolation, having the surgery now (and three months to rehab your wrist before the baby is born) will mean more quality time and better interactions with your daughter.

  • I hope the surgery goes well! T&Ps for your wrist while you wait this week. Maybe having some dinners in freezer can help occupy you and ease your mind. Doing something to prep for an event helps my anxiety. Appreciate the update, Mama!
