1 cm dilated woohoo! anyone else?

I just found out today from my obgyn that I am 1 cm dilated. I asked him what that meant and he said basically baby can come any day now but it doesn't mean he will arrive sooner or later. Apparently I could be walking around 1 cm dilated for a week. My due date is two weeks from tomorrow. Has anyone else found out you were dilated and if so, how long has it taken to progress? I know it won't apply to me since everyone is different. I was just curious how many Dec mamas are getting to that point.

  • I was 2.5cm and 80% effaced 2 weeks ago. I haven't been checked since, but there are no signs of anything progressing.

Was 1 cm dilated and 60% effaced at 37 wks. We'll see what the word is tomorrow at 38. I know it doesn't tell me anything, but I found it encouraging to hear there was something happening.

  • My friend walked around at 4cm dilated for over a month. I am glad you are getting excited but don't read too much into it.

Got checked at my apt today cause I have lots of night contractions.

    2cm and 60% at 36+3 weeks.

You could stay that way forever though, so I'm not too excited.

  • @chicorojo‌ I am glad you brought up effacement. Which is more significant, effacement or dilation? I tried looking it up but all I find is that one affects the other.

I read in Expecting Better (I think) that effacement was generally more correlated with going into labor than dilation. But I think it's still hit or miss.

  • I have heard of a ton of people being "paused" at 3-4 cm actually. Many of my friends with kids have told me they were at that point for a while. I only have two-three weeks to go thankfully.

  • One of my friends went from 2 to 10 within an hour with her third kiddo. I get checked on Wednesday but am holding out for the contractions/water breaking part to happen before I'll believe I'm in labor...
  • At my appt last Thursday, 3 cm/70%/0 station. I had an awesome bout of prodromal/latent labor Friday night, which got me to 5 cm/80%. I knew the contractions were doing something. But this is typical for me. Still waiting for active labor to kick in.

  • Dialated 1 cm since 28 weeks, probably more now, but refusing to get checked until labor starts. I'm 37 weeks now...so yeah, means nothing.
  • 3cm and 80% for the past 3 weeks. Soooo yeah, doesn't necessarily mean much. Dr swore she was coming early but I'm 39+3 tomorrow and no signs she's coming.

  • I'm choosing not to get checked until I'm overdue because you can walk around for weeks being dilated. I'm just going to let things happen as they come.
  • Almost wish I never got checked, because now that we started I'm obsessing over these numbers that don't mean anything!

    36 weeks: 0cm 60% -3 station
    37 weeks: 0cm 60% -2 station
    38 weeks: .5cm 60% -2 station

It feels like it's going slow, but I keep reminding myself these things mean nothing and it can stay the same for weeks or it can change in a matter of minutes.. And now I'm a monster obsessed with numbers lol
  • 1cm since 31 weeks. I won't be excited til I'm all the way.

  • 1.5cm dilated at 36 weeks
  • I am 36weeks and have spent all day in L&D contracting every 2/3 minutes. I dilated to 4cm and stalled out. I was sent home contracting! They are super tight and mild/moderately painful. I am laying on a heating pad right now. Technically I don't want labor to happen so I am trying to rest, but I don't want to deliver in my car either. The waiting game is so confusing! I was told to return if my water broke or if I was doubled over in pain. So basically, I have learned that dilation numbers mean absolutely nothing! It is all about progression over time.
  • 36 weeks and 2 cm, 40% effaced and fully engaged - this was as of last Thursday and this is my second baby. Interested to see where I'm at on Wednesday. Never went into labor with DD, had a scheduled c section but I was 2 cm for 2 weeks and nothing ever happened. Allllll day today I swear I can feel dilation or effacement happening, very strange feeling. Super uncomfortable that she's fully engaged too, everything feels so bruised. Whatever baby girl wants will happen!
  • @SLC1102 yes, "rly." obviously i'm not doctor, it could be anything - but based off of what I feel, i'm assuming thats what it is.
  • I haven't had a check yet. My practice typically starts them at 39 weeks, unless requested earlier (or I could certainly decline even at 39). Half of me logically knows they mean nothing and that it might not be worth the discomfort, but the other half of me is dying of curiosity, so I may request a check at my 38 weeks appt on Wednesday.

  • With DS1 I was at 2cm for 3 weeks and then was induced and hadn't changed up to that point. With DS2 I was 2 cm (36 weeks)and then 5 days later was at a 4 and ended up having him that night.
Dilation means nothing in terms of when labor will start. It's exciting to hear that you are progressing, but can be misleading and get you more excited for something that could take a while to happen.

  • I was 2-3 cm and 80-90% with my first for weeks before I was induced and then ended up with a c-section.

I'm sure my doc will offer to check when she does my GBS swab next week, and I will accept. I know that it means diddly, but I still like to know where I'm at.

  • How does one FEEL it without actually doing an internal exam on themselves???

When it was happening to me during labor, I could definitely tell something was going on. Lightening crotch on steriods and sharp stabby cramping in the vag (very different from the contractions). It was all very clearly happening in the vag so for me it was pretty obvious. I didn't know how dilated or anything I was, but I sure know my cervix was opening.

@MissChristineMarie‌ @misskilljoy‌ I obviously can't say for sure if what I'm feeling is my cervix opening, I've been dealing with contractions all week and have been plenty of comfortable with normal aches and pains but today I have been feeling like a burning/stretching/cramping feeling very unlike anything I've felt before. Like I said earlier I already know she's fully engaged, 40% effaced and 2 cm dilated so I know she's making progress, I guess I'll find out Wednesday at my appt. or sooner if something happens.
  • I was 3.5cm dilated and 90% effaced the day before I went into labor.
  • I'm 37 weeks today and my Dr told me I was a finger tip dialated a few days ago.. I guess you can be like that for a while! Can't wait for things to get moving :)
  • A week ago at 37 weeks I was 1 cm and 50% effaced, and the OB told me to "Keep an eye out and your phone close, could be any day now!" Which I thought was pretty silly to say since I know it doesn't necessarily mean much.
This weekend I was having what felt like constant lightning crotch, so I was curious if that was any sign of further dilating (though I'm not afraid to admit I have no earthly idea what I'm talking about). So today at my 38 wk appointment, guess where I am? 1 cm and 50%. Things are really moving along, huh doc?
  • No idea here either. No one has been looking in there since the last time my MFM did at 32w.... at 36w now and am perfectly happy not having things messed with in there.
