Re: Cloth Diaper mamas?

  • We are going to cloth at home after newborn stage but can't at daycare (or at least the most likely option- it could always change if provider changes).
  • Loading the player...
  • We're using cloth! Just prepped my stash over the last week. Can't wait to use all these adorable newborn sized covers.

  • We're going to CD also!  Although we decided to for-go a separate newborn stash, and went with all one size, so we'll use disposables until the OS fit well.
  • I just revived my one size pockets in the mail today!! washing them today and tomorrow :) I seriously had to feel every single one, I could sit there forever just looking/feeling them all lol!! call me a weirdo but those fluffy diapers are just too cute to resist!! My prefolds for newborn stage are in the mail on the way!!

  • We are also cloth diapering but using sposies for the newborn stage. I have built a pretty diverse stash since my sis has cloth diapered two and is able to give me suggestions on what I might like. I have scored some really awesome prints on facebook groups.

  • Just finished my 5th wash of all my new prefolds. I'm not ready and feel like I am totally going to screw it up. I will use disposable for a few weeks along with cd to get the hang of it and not overwhelm myself. This was recommended by a friend who CDs they said it the less stress way to go.

when washing your prefolds did you dry in between ? also did you use hot water or cold? every site i visit says something different lol I know it sounds over whelming and i hope to be calm and collect, this is my first baby so i have no idea what to expect .. but i am so blessed that my DH is on board and is ready to help with the diapers to make it happen from day one :)

  • I searched and all the sites said something different, annoying! I asked a friend and just washed them then dried when done with all cycles. Hot then Cold wash on heavy is what I did. Hope that worked I'm using all un bleached and some bleached only need one wash.

  • Yay fluffy bumms! Way to go D14, Im so impressed as to how many families are planning on CD
  • I will have 2 in cloth! I'm a pocket lover and am stoked to have my lil guys be matching fluff butts!

    Re: washing

I do a hold wash, cold rinse with small amount of detergent and vinegar on heavy for one wash. Then I rerun them on hot wash, cold rinse nothing added on light. If it's good weather I line dry them, if it's crappy they go in the dryer on low heat until dry. I've done this wash cycle for almost 17 months now and only ruined one diaper.

  • We are CDing as soon as one size fits! I'm so excited, going to finish prepping our stash tomorrow!
  • I'm cloth diapering but I think I totally screwed myself! I prepped several of my synthetic dipes with my natural fiber dipes which is a huge no no and I'm at a loss of how to fix! Anyone got ideas?

  • Yep! My mom is making covers and Ill be using prefolds. We'll start with newborn size and use them for burp cloths or doublers once he outgrows them. My mom will also make a few all in ones :) Im excited to save money!

I'm going to guess it's time to start prepping again and do it separately. But I'm no expert. I'd post on the CD board; I bet they'll have some great ideas. GL!

  • We're giving it a whirl. We've signed up for a local diapering service - clean ones show up each week and we just set out the dirties on our porch! Thought this would be a good way to get the hang of it without buying NB sizes and without the laundry. I'm excited!
  • We'll have two in cloth as well!

    DS 06/2013

    DD 12/2014

  • This is my first and the idea of saving money is very enticing! I'm going to do disposables for the first month and then do a trial service to see if I can handle the laundry and whatnot. It's frustrating to have people be so discouraging about it. Even my MIL who cloth diapered her first 2 kids!

@lucymcgillicudi1010, you're fine. No reason you have to prep them separate.

ETA: SOme people swear you gotta do it separate. Ive never done it, and lot of people dont. I suggest joining the Fluff Love and CD Science FB page, its lots of great help/info.
  • Cloth diapers for us! It's all we used for DS and loved it! I'm actually looking forward to having a fluffy bum in the house again!

    Here.
  • We are cloth diapering after we get out of the newborn stage only because we got a lot of newborn size disposables as gifts. So excited!!
  • Yay im so excited for everyone!!
  • We are cloth diapering for sure. Disposables for the first week then cloth. We might do a service intermittently when life demands some additional help!
  • Me! Newborn stash is all prepped. I'm ridiculously excited about our diapers!

  • I'm CD'ing too! Can't wait to use these ADORABLE diapers. Love how soft they are. Going with one size. We have 1 pack of disposable for NB stage, but LO may be big enough to fit in the cloth right away. So excited! Planning on washing and prepping them in a week or so.
  • Stash shot.
    I know I have a problem, & I don't care.
  • I really wanted to... but DH said if I wanted him to do any of the changing then no CD. If we were just having one baby I'd deal and CD anyway, but with twice the number of everything I want the help.

  • lets see the stash ladies !! :) so excited!
  • I am cloth diapering too.  I am not due until the end of December though, and my stash is definitely not up to par with what I'm seeing on here!  I registered for a lot of cloth diapers and cloth diapering accessories on Amazon, so I plan to see how many I get at my shower next weekend and then buy the rest myself.  I figure if I don't have enough right away, I could always use disposables during the newborn phase, though that is not my preference.  I can't believe such a large number of D14s are cloth diapering--super excictng!! :)

I know its wonderful how many people are CDing! I dont have my complete stash built yet some are still in the mail my due date is also at the end of the month of dec I only have 24 pockets in one size right now and the newborn ones are in transit. Look into prefolds or flats and covers, its the most cost efficient way to go for the newborn stage seeing as they really only may be using them for a couple weeks up to a month, might be an option for you so you can CD from day one if you are up for it. I will be using prefolds and covers from day one:)
  • Using the same stash from ds#1 and ds#2.  I bought about 6 new diapers that are more "girly" too.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

  • We cloth diapers DD 5 years ago, and are again this time. :)

We have a newborn stash of Bum Genius AIO, workhorse fitteds, prefolds and covers. And a One Size stash of Bum Genius Freetime AIO and .0 pockets, and a bunch of Alva pockets. I plan to get some larger workhorses or flats to use with our covers also, but waiting on those since it'll be a while.

We are using disposibles for the first week or so though since we were gifted a bunch and I would rather not deal with meconium stains.

    Same here!
  • We're cloth diapering too. Prefolds with Thirsties covers for newborn stage and then Kawaii pockets after that. We might do disposables for the first week though, like a few others had mentioned.

Question for you CD pros: I made my own powder laundry detergent (thanks Pinterest), but it has borax in it. That's a no-no for cloth diapers, right? I've read conflicting information on this and was just wondering if any of you had experience with using detergent with borax.

People will swear to you that homemade detergent works on diapers, and it does - until you have problems.
We use plain old Tide Free and Clear without any special stuff added to it. People will tell you to use less detergent but its BS and your diapers won't be clean.
There are a lot of detergents you can get at a store that are CD safe.

Borax is okay occasionally, and is used when stripping but you certainly don't want to use it every wash.

I use the homemade detergent for our laundry and it actually works really well. I was just hoping to be able to use it for the diapers too, but I guess I better not. Thanks for the info!

  • I'll be cloth diapering as soon as we get home or at least as soon as she can fit into them at the point in the game! Here's my newborn stash :D
  • Cloth diapers fitteds for a good price on BabySteals.com today!! They have NB and Infant sizes (you would need a waterproof cover over them) and also cloth wipes.
