Re: Cloth Diaper mamas?

  • We're also cloth diapering--using a local pick-up service and we're expecting our first shipment with the start up package with covers in a little over a week. So excited to know I can come here to discuss how it's going with all of you once LO arrives!

  • We cloth diapers DD 5 years ago, and are again this time. :)

We have a newborn stash of Bum Genius AIO, workhorse fitteds, prefolds and covers. And a One Size stash of Bum Genius Freetime AIO and .0 pockets, and a bunch of Alva pockets. I plan to get some larger workhorses or flats to use with our covers also, but waiting on those since it'll be a while.

We are using disposibles for the first week or so though since we were gifted a bunch and I would rather not deal with meconium stains.
    Same here!
    Us too
    (visiting from J15)
Have a big stash as we CDd with both girls. Mostly prefolds and covers for the NB phase, with a few Kissaluvs contours thrown in.

I cloth diapered my first two kids. one tip I highly suggest is purchasing and installing one of these:

honestly that makes all the difference in the world in terms of ease of laundering them, especially the really messy ones once baby starts eating solids.

I second tide or ALL free and clear for detergent with borax occasionally for stripping, and I think it's smart to do disposables till all the meconium is gone, because it WILL stain and is hard to resell meconium stained diapers.

Also, be very careful what products you put on baby's bum for rash or as a barrier. destin will ruin cloth diapers. make sure the products you use are cloth diaper safe.

we're not cloth diapering this time, but it's fun and they sure are cuter than disposables!!!

Yes! We use Burts Bee multipurpose ointment but if you must use something else, find an old fleece blanket and cut strips to make liners to protect your diapers.
  • coconut oil works well for diaper rash as well and wont ruin anything
  • We're collecting a stash of ai2 for our jellybean! We even purchased a portable washer just to be able to cloth diaper.... Still cheaper than disposables! I was really worried about the washing process but then I watched this amazing vlog that made all my fears evaporate: https://youtu.be/EjDLsk27bvw She also has links in the description to a written blog article, so it's all set :D
  • yes we are. I have a good stash now. he won't be abke to fit in them right away though and we have travelled interstate for the birth. So once we are back settled at home and he is big enough for the osfm ones we have it will be awesome. We also have cloth wipes some bought ones snd some that I made from cutting up an old flannel sheet.

  • @estrophine - In that video she says she washes them every four days, but everyone I've spoken to suggests every two days. I think leaving them longer can damage the diapers because of the ammonia build up. I'm planning to wash them every other evening. I don't know that I'll ever use max detergent for my diapers, either. I've found with my regular laundry that using max detergent causes problems - clothes don't get properly cleaned, there's residue left behind, my towels don't absorb as much water and aren't as soft, etc. So I plan to use more than a "tiny" bit but definitely not the maximum amount.

We'll see how that washing routine goes for me once I'm contending with actual baby laundry and not just theory. ;)
Ammonia wont hurt them, just can make them stinky. We wash every other day because its the south, and you get maggots if you don't but I could easily go a week without washing if needed.

I also just go to the first line for the tide scoop.
