Newbie/FTM questions?

Re: Newbie/FTM questions?

  • @hoping4aUNICORN‌ I'm not a fan of those or any others that have Velcro. They always bunched up on DD's neck. A+A swaddles are the only ones I use.

  • One other thing to consider with the epidural: Your OB is ultimately the one deciding when you can get it. The OB is the one putting in the orders so it is always a good idea to discuss this ahead of time. Some OB's won't allow an epidural before you reach a certain dialation point (there is some evidence that it can slow labor for some people).
  • I might be wrong... But I think they need to take blood work and make sure something's with it are a-ok first before giving you an epidural

Thanks for the info on swaddle things, I have a few a+a blankets, but I'm excited about baby not being able to un-swaddle themselves, my first two where really good at wiggling out! Guess it's one of those baby items that some swear by and others could live without.
  • I might be wrong... But I think they need to take blood work and make sure something's with it are a-ok first before giving you an epidural
Blood work when you get to the hospital or before at your OB?

Mine was at the hospital. My hospital also required a full bag of IV fluids to be administered before they would give an epidural.

Yes.... This :) but like I said, might be wrong....... I have 3 beautiful kids and I only had an epidural once with my first, but I remember NOTHING! They didn't think it was time and sent me home with a sleeping pill..... Long story short, I got home fell asleep, only to wake up about 30 min later to my water breaking with meconium in it!! Hubby rushed me back to the hospital.... I don't remember the car ride, getting there, getting an epidural, signing my life away for said epidural.... They woke me up around 6 A.M. "honey, it's time to have a baby".... And boom!! Baby!!
  • Sooooo.... Not a FTM but they didn't have these when I had my first kids, has anyone used them?..... They look like so much fun and I feel like I'm going to be disappointed if they aren't as cool as I think they are image
I had one of these and the wombie. DD's hands would still escape with this one. But really she hated being swaddled. It wasnt her thing. Some love it and need it, some dont.

  • Just adding that my hospital does not do IV pain relief before a epidural, and my epidural did not interfere with BFing at all. I couldn't feel any pain of the Pitocin contractions once I got the epidural, but I could start to feel the pressure when I was getting ready to push.

  • I got an epidural and I couldn't feel anything. They thought they were going to have to C-Section me for lack of progression ( I was stalled at 7 forever with back labor) and then I started progressing well. By the time I made it to 10 and pushed for a lil over 2 hours his heart rate started dipping so I got another to be sure I was good to go (so I was really numb then). I got the C/S and spent a bit of time getting sewed back up. I didn't have any problems breast feeding.

Mmk I have another one :P In my reading, childbirth classes, and birth video watching, I haven't quite understood what "labor" means. I saw someone's signature say that she had a 36 hour labor. I realize there are different stages of labor, but when exactly does it start? I know that to go to the hospital my contractions need to be 5 min apart lasting 1 min for 1 hour - is that the beginning of labor?
Also, in all that time that you're laboring, are you contracting that much or more (5 min apart) the whole time? I've seen a few birth videos where the woman goes to sleep in the hospital, but I don't really understand how she could. Epidural?
Just trying to wrap my head around the whole labor thing, as I've never seen anyone go through it besides edited video.

This is probably a really dumb question!

  • Was it my siggy @pinklepop‌ lol

@Eora3‌ posted a great link to explain it.

My 36 hour labor is what I counted as having contractions every 5 mins, lasting a minute (or longer).

Based on current data active labor is said to be 6 cm now (vs 4 cm from past guidelines), but how frequently contractions come at that point varies a lot. Some determine it's labor by 5-1-1. It can vary widely. I've never experienced early labor, and only experienced active labor with #3. Some mamas begin that pattern in the early phase and others later.

So I have a question about the 'baby dropping' phenomena that I keep hearing about.

Does it happen to everyone? And do you always notice it?

(I ask as I sit here feeling what I image to be his butt spreading my rib cage... My boobs are literally resting on his butt; he's quite high still.)
    @LadyThrice

Dropping/lightening is when the baby begins to enter the pelvis, which is usually at -3 station, but that's still considered "high." Some can usually tell baby has begun to drop when they can breathe better and there's more space at the top of their fundus. It's more common for FTMs to drop or engage before labor than S+TMs, where babies often engage during labor.

Engagement is 0 station, where baby's head is level with the ischial spines. Negative numbers means baby is above the spines, and positive is below with +5 being crowning/ready to be born.

For a FTM, one should encourage engagement before 38 weeks to ensure optimal fetal positioning.

I actually never experienced engagement until just before birth with my others (but I did have mild polyhydramnios with #1). This is the only pregnancy where baby has engaged prior to labor/birth.

  • @ladythrice‌ it really depends on how much room you have left and how big the baby is too. I am short and short-waisted and have big babies. My babies never get a chance to really drop before they just run out of room. Lol! Darn you for being tall, DH!!!

I have a friend who is also short and has had the same experience with her babies.
  • @pinklepop, regarding epidurals and breastfeeding:

I’ve never had my OB or any mainstream pregnancy books mention a problem with getting an epidural, but every natural childbirth source (people and books) I’ve encountered have mentioned this as one of the reasons to try for a natural childbirth.

Since it’s difficult to sort this all out, I usually trust LLL when it comes to breastfeeding, and I also usually try to read the primary literature.  According to LLL:  “There is evidence to show that epidural anesthesia probably does diminish the neonate's early ability to suckle.”  It’s not the mom that has trouble with breastfeeding, but rather that the newborn is more groggy due to the influence of the epidural.

The research is summarized here: https://www.lalecheleague.org/ba/nov99.html and is fairly consistent. There is a study discussed about ¾ of the way down in which narcotics were not used and the same effect was observed.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to breastfeed successfully or shouldn’t get an epidural.  That is obviously a very personal decision.  But if you do get off to a bad start breastfeeding, it could be related to having an epidural, and you may just have to try harder to get things back on track.

Soooo, here's a question.  As I sit here in pain because little guy keeps head-butting my cervix - can I at least hope that some of these movements are going to help me to progress in the coming weeks?  Or is he beating me up for no gain other than his own evil joy that he gets out of my pain?

Yeah, agreed that he can bounce all he wants and it won't progress you :(.

I have a related question that yours reminded me of. I typically don't feel pressure in my vagina/cervix area, but am getting increasingly intense pressure in my very low abdomen area and pubic bone. Is this the same thing or different sensation than you gals are getting?

  • @NELSMD‌ I'm with you on that feeling. I think it's just this little one getting head down or moving into another position.

I had a cervical check for the first time yesterday and, although I'm not dilated yet, the doc mentioned that baby's head was "very low." I've been confused, though, because I don't feel vaginal pressure...
I also realize that this was a dumb ftm question. Glad this thread is flame free :).

This could be because his butt is still resting under my boobs though........

I'm impressed that you know what parts are where! I still can't tell if I'm getting feet, elbows, or hands in my sides! It was reassuring to hear he was head down and low.

Once the baby flipped head down, my midwife said I would feel more vaginal pressure. I personally feel the same amount of pressure.

The only change I noticed recently was period like cramps at least once a day that last maybe a couple minutes. Not the same as the braxton hicks tightening of my belly I get quite often. Maybe the cramps were the pressure I'm supposed to feel? Who knows! Either way I plan to let the midwife know at my appointment tomorrow.

I basically walked around 50% effaced and dilated at 1.5 for 2 weeks before my water broke (which isn't the case for everyone) and it basically felt like I was carrying a bowling ball in my vag. It was a lot of pressure.

this time I'm carrying low again but it's not the same amount of pressure. It still hurts and sucks, but it's a different feeling.

Consider yourself lucky, stabby cervix pain sucks. Ive been having a hard time going on walks because her head presses down and it hurts so much I have to just stop moving until she stops squirming her head around.

  • I'm not a FTM but I'll ask anyway... I'm curious... I've been using the exercise ball a lot lately instead of sitting on the couch in the evenings while watching tv. (Spinning babies made me fear my terrible couch posture) I never used one while I was pregnant with DDs... I'm feeling TONS more of those major stabby cervix pains than before and don't remember feeling with either of my previous pregnancies... Is my baby falling out? Lol. No but really... Could it be the ball is actually helping something? (OBVIOUSLY I'm asking my doctor on Friday morning.)

I was told that the ball helps the pelvis open up and keeps the baby in the right position.
  • @3girlsnthepup I've been sitting on the couch with terrible posture, and I'm still getting the stabby pains. At this point, I'm almost worried to try a ball. :)

I've been doing some of my prenatal yoga stretches to open up the pelvis, so hopefully I'm getting the same benefit. But the stabby pains can just go away right now.

    @3girlsnthepup

Yep. I started exclusively sitting on my birthing ball once I knew she was vertex. So if I'm sitting, it's on my ball. I only lay on my side on the couch or bed. That and I go on walks a lot and walk my kids to school (2 miles round trip) in the morning if it's not raining. That with the pelvic tilts has helped her descend and engage in the pelvis. I've never had a baby reach 0 station until late transition or just before birth. I did have excessive fluid with #1 and 3 that usually prevents deep engagement, but my other two were at -2 station at this point. Low-ish, but not so low that I get tons of pelvic and rectal pressure.

Gravity is your friend. Pressure on the pelvic floor puts added pressure on the cervix and helps with cervical ripening.

So... Is it truly a good idea to eat a big meal before heading to hospital on the day of since they only give you ice chips? I just don't want to be starving and feeling weak/faint and have them give me nothing but water/ice.

    TIA

I couldn't keep anything down once my labor started they let me eat lunch in the hospital and well it was back about 45mins later

I went to the hospital at 4am so the last I ate was a snack the evening before. My stomach was pretty much empty but I did throw up around 8am or so.  Food was the last thing on my mind during labor.  I wanted to avoid IV fluids so I had to force myself to drink water.

After delivery, it hit me that I was starving and ordered a huge lunch when I was transferred from L&D to my room around 1pm.

See how you feel when labor starts.  You can always pack crackers or fruit to have in L&D if you feel like you need to eat.  Check your hospital policy but you may need to hide it from the nurse.

I went into the hospital around 4:30am (having not eaten anything since dinner) after my water broke and I wish I would have eaten something before I got there. At breakfast time I was on a "white diet". Either toast or oatmeal. Oatmeal grosses me out so they gave me one, ONE, piece of toast. And I'm assuming this is so I wouldn't get sick/vomit everywhere... but I was starving. DS was born at 7:15PM on NYE. It was past dinner and everything else in the hospital was closed due to the holiday. DH had to run to Sheetz at 9PM because I thought I was dying. I already told him that no matter what time we go to the hospital, we're stopping and getting food on the way or at least taking more with us. After more than 24 hours without a real meal, 16 hours of labor and one piece of toast, I was still able to have my unmedicated birth, but I still think it would have been easier if I could have had more in me. I recommend eating something. Even if it's something little.

in my birthing class, they told us that while you are laboring at home (which they want you to try and do as long as possible) to keep eating "light snacks" every 2-3 hours, but advised against a huge stomach filling meal.  Mostly that just a safety precaution in case you end up with an emergency c-section.
  • I am finding myself completely overwhelmed knowing that I'm being induced tomorrow!! I thought I had so much more time anyways my ??? Breast pump a necessity? Thoughts on a used breast pump(or is that one of those more personal don't share items)? Baby's clothes is there really a difference between newborn and 0-3 month clothes! I just realized I have zero nwb sleepers but a crap load of onesies and a crap ton of 0-3 month sleepers!! Sleep sacks safe?
If you will be returning to work, a breast pump is a necessity to continue to BF.  You'll want a good double electric.  If you will be staying home, a simple, single manual would probably be enough.  If you ever want to have a date night or a few hours away from baby you'll need to have milk available or use formula.  There is a brand with a closed system but most retail pumps are single user only.  Check with your ins, most will cover a pump under ACA as preventive care. Unless you are having latch problems or will be separated from baby, you won't need for a few weeks.  If baby needs the NICU, the hospital should be able to supply you with one to use.

There is a difference in NB and 0-3 months.  Unless you expecting a big baby, a few NB sleepers might be nice to have. 0-3 mo will work but might be big for a couple weeks.

Sleep sacks are safe.  They are an alternative to loose blankets in the crib (not safe).

If you don't have any pants that fit, just... keep the baby in sleepers. He'll be okay. Nothing to fall down that way. ;)

I'm just a FTM and I clearly don't have any class because 90% of my NB outfits are sleepers so my daughter is going to live in pyjamas all day every day for the first little while, but I don't care. :D

Sleepers are the best too much work to change clothes lets face it my son and I will probably live in pajamas for a while too since I do now anyways

Good question. I have had people tell me to eat for sure, but just enough to tide me over and not gorge myself so I don't puke.

I had the same question about the breast pump. My mom said in the first couple weeks it's important to try getting baby to latch and get the colostrum(?) So she said not to bring my pump, if baby does have a problem latching the hospital will have a pump just in case but to at least try getting LO to latch instead of pumping right away..

As for the sleep sacks, we were set on getting one for the coming home outfit, but a friend of mine made an amazing point that the sleep sacks aren't the best for the carseat as the straps needs to go between the legs. Totally didn't even think about that... But great point! so we just got a sleeper with legs. Although they do have the sleep sacks with the open bottom. Which are easier for diaper changes anyway.
  • I have a (possibly silly) FTM question. For those that HAVE had their water break before getting to the hospital or being induced, is there any symptoms or signs that might come before it happens that would indicate it may happen soon or were you feeling normal and all the sudden it started leaking? I know its probably different for everybody but a general idea is what I'm lookin for.

There's times I'm walking out the the mailbox or through the grocery store and I feel a sudden bit of pressure on my bladder/lady parts area and I stop in my tracks like 'oh sh*t am I about to become Niagara falls in aisle 12??' Lol
