TTC After a Loss

AW: My Cat :/

Hi Ladies,

I just need to bitch. I'm sorry - IRL people just don't get it and a few of my friends have basically told me I'm insane.

So about a month ago Muffin Butt was bleeding from his back paw. I loaded him in the carrier and took him to the vet. Our vet had a look and told me it was a puncture wound, put some sort of litter like solution on it to stop the bleeding and told me that it would eventually heal itself.

The first few days we just assumed he'd leave it alone. Wrong. Every couple of days he'd clean his paw, tear or bite of the scab and the bleeding would start up again. We got desperate and started with a cone. It was okay for a few days and then he decided to scratch the cone with his back leg and the scab came off and blood everywhere again.

Our last ditch effort was bandaging the thing and having him wear the cone. He wore a bandage for a week and it looked like it had healed. We took everything off and within 5 minutes he had pulled off the scab and there was blood everywhere again.

On Friday night, we were changing his bandage when he started to bleed profusely. We're talking puddles of bright red clotty blood.

We rushed him to the 24 hours vet and spent the whole night there. At first, the vet didn't want to do anything telling me that there was some sort of a lump that was causing the bleeding. She told me that it would cost us a fortune to have it removed there so we were best to wait for our regular vet for treatment. At that point they were going to bandage him up and send him home.  She told us we were likely looking at a toe amputation. :(

After being bandaged he kicked so hard that the bandage fell off - it pulled off the lump and exposed to "hole" that I originally explained to her. The vet ended up doing a small surgery and stitching the hole closed.

Now, he's on antibiotics, has a cast and takes morphine every 8 hours. My friends and family think i'm nuts for a) putting so much effort into this and b) spending so much money.

Everything combined is over 1000$. We can't really afford it and dipped into our savings to do this because we couldn't bare to see him bleed and suffer anymore.

Please tell me I'm not crazy?

  • You are definitely not crazy!  I spent over $3000 to get two cruciate ligament surgeries for my rescued pit bull mix so that he could run around again.  Our furry friends are a part of our family and I fully support your decision to spend money to get Muffin Butt back on all four feet.  I'm sorry that it's been such an ordeal and I hope that stitching it up will do the job.  How long does he have to be on morphine?

Many (((((HUGS))))) Pink!  Some people just don't understand the attachment to animals, but I get it!  Any idea how he originally got the puncture?

    Sort of?

I have 2 cats and a dog. Muffin Butt and Chubbs play fight every so often and the morning that this originally happened they were wrestling in the hall way right before the blood started. So maybe a bite? If it wasn't the other cat then maybe my dog. She doesn't like him very much and often lunges at his back legs when he jumps so she could have very well done it too.
  • Well you know I'm not going to tell you you're crazy!  I spent 3k on my cat (and that's with an employee discount!) a few years ago when she needed to have a bladder stone removed and I spend 50$ for a 17lb bag of special food so she doesn't get them again.  So no, I do not think you are crazy.  Did they not put your kitty on antibiotics to begin with?  I'm sorry you had to go through all this, I hope your kitty heals well this time

Yeah they did. They injected him with antibiotics the very first time I took him in for this.
  • I'm going with the consensus. You most definitely are NOT crazy. Muffin Butt is a member of your family too and I admire you for doing what you needed to do!

  • Totally not crazy, I have spent more on emergency trips to the vet for a roommate's cat!  My parents spent tons on our pets over the years, they are family.
  • Not crazy at all. When we first got our dog as a puppy, he was diagnosed with parvo, and we ended up with a little over $1000 in vet bills:/ But he was still a member of our family, even if he had only been with us for a few days. He survived and has been with us for 6 years now:)

  • I vote not crazy. Furbabies are family, and I 100% think when you get one you're committing to taking care of it.

I think it's awesome that you take such good care of your cat. I also love the name Muffin Butt.

  • So totally not crazy. My dog got pneumonia a week before my wedding and ended up having to spend 4 days at the vets. The total bill was somewhere in the range of $2500. I swear I worried more about the dog than being able to actually pay for the wedding.

  • Absolutely not crazy and I sort of have a problem with anyone that gives you side eyes for doing that for Muffin Butt. I can only hope they aren't pet owners. :(

I am glad you're such a good furbaby mom!

I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • Oh, your poor baby! I hope he feels better soon. (And you, too. It's stressful when our furbabies aren't well.)

You are not crazy. You love him and made a commitment to care for him the best you can. He's a part of the family. I sideeye people who can look at an animal in pain and say 'meh'.

We've spent a lot on our pets and most recently generated some deeply strange looks bringing the kitty in my profile pic back to the States from South America. At the end of the day, the only people whose business it is how you spend your money is yours and YH's.
  • aweee Muffin Butt does not look amused! He's so cute though :)

  • Not crazy at all. I hope he heals quickly. I spent $5k on a puppy I had just bought because he had parvo. He didn't make it, but I don't regret spending that money to try to save him.

  • You are not crazy. When I was a grad student (read: broke as broke gets), I nursed my cat through cancer for 9 months, including a CT scan, weekly blood draws, and 2 different chemo regimens. He did not survive (I knew he wouldn't), and I would still do it all again in a heartbeat. I never calculated the total I spent, mostly because I didn't (and still don't) care. Pets are family to me, and it sounds like to you too. I am so sorry your kitty is going through this and I hope your vet attends to this issue appropriately. FX this is a quick recovery!

  • Nope! Not crazy at all. I've got birds and they need to see an Avian specialist vet. And I do bring them for yearly check ups.

When we got our first conure, he ended up having a crop infection because the breeder didn't make sure he emptied his crop before feeding him again. Vet visit, tests, and antibiotics cost over $600. Keep in mind this is a bird we just bought for $150. So worth it though because I couldn't bear to see my little birdy throwing up and uncomfortable.

  • Lurking... Siggy Warning You are not crazy. I've spent thousands of dollars on treatments for my pets over the years. We spent $3500 to save our Ragdoll kittens life (congestive heart failure), and he now costs $80/month in meds to keep him healthy (he's a big/healthy 3 year old). To me it was worth it. Yes people might think you are crazy, but I think you're awesome for taking good care of your kitty!

I hope your kitty doesn't need an amputation, but if she does she will manage fine. My brothers cat is missing one of his legs and he moves/functions normally. I would think a toe loss would be no big deal, other than the bill of course.

I can completely relate to the frustration about the bleeding too. My poor doggy has been having nosebleeds due to a sinus tumour, and when he bleeds it's a blood bath! So sorry for all you're dealing with. ((Hugs)).

  • I agree with everyone else...you are definitely not crazy! I would pay any amount of money to keep my fur babies healthy. Hugs to you and Muffin Butt (I can't stop laughing at his name!) I hope he heals up soon!
  • Of course you are not crazy!  Part of being a responsible pet owner is the knowledge that should they develop fixable health problems, you will do everything in your power to fix them!  I am seriously bothered by those who don't realize that and question spending money on "just a pet."  I hope those people never get pets.

I hope Muffin Butt feels better soon.

  • Not even a little bit crazy. Pets are family!

Our puppy got super sick with a skin condition back in May/June and then got even sicker after an allergic reaction to the meds they put him on to fight it. We racked up a 4k bill with lots of meds, overnight ER stays and specialty vet visits. The issue comes back every 6-8 weeks and that requires another couple of vet visits and meds each time. I would do it all again in a heartbeat. And I'm sure you would too. It's what makes you a good fur baby momma.

My only suggestion is maybe looking in to pet insurance. I laughed at my DH when he suggested it when we got our puppy, but it has helped tremendously. We pay about $30 a month. The insurance covers 90% of everything after our $500 deductible (except for a few things that aren't covered like the initial visit fee) It may not cover the problem now, but down the road it may be worth it.

T&P to you and your sweet kitty!!! :)
  • I'm so sorry about your cat and his poor toe.  Poor guy!  And I don't think that's crazy to take care of your pet like that, they rely on us and are part of our families.  Hope he's healed up soon!

  • You're not crazy.  Our pets are really part of our families.

If it makes you feel better, I ended up spending close to $10,000 on my Golden puppy.  He jumped off the stairs onto our wood floors and broke his leg in the growth plate, had to have puppy orthopedic surgery, several re-castings and X-rays (each of which he had to have anesthesia for), then developed a small bowel obstruction due to the pain meds he was on and had to have bowel resected then had to have puppy physical therapy.  This was all 2 years ago and he's totally fine now.

In retrospect it's hard to imaging I spent that much money, but he's so damn sweet, I would do it all again.

  • I'm so glad Muffin Butt is doing better! I just wish the vet had taken care of this correctly the first time.

I'm starting to think you hang around with the wrong people IRL ;)  Muffin Butt is part of your family, you care about him, and you committed to taking care of him.  Nothing crazy about that.

  • awwww thanks everyone! I was just so upset at the cost and the feeling of being judged by people who don't get it! Thanks again for sharing all your stories with me.
    :x
  • How is Muffin Butt doing this morning?
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

Oh he's acting perfectly normal. Too active even. We're taking him in for a bandage change tonight!
