Stupid Questions Sunday

As a FTM I have a stupid question or 7 that Google just doesn't have the answer and/or is something my Dr would head tilt at. I know I'm not alone with my stupid questions, so instead of clogging up the board with multiple threads lets keep them all in 1 place.

My stupid question this week;

What crib mattress did you or are you planning to purchase? gel, foam, springs, cotton, crunchy, plastics....too many damn options. I would love the input of A15 (including our own brand of snark).

Have a stupid question of your own not solved by Google or requiring a medical professional? Add it here.

Re: Stupid Questions Sunday

  • @rsaj0807‌ thank you. Between 12 in BBB/BRU & a bazillion on amazon I'm lost in all the options.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm just going to ask my sister what she got and get the same one.  Too many options and she was the type to do tons of research before registering, so I trust her judgment.  Save myself a little legwork.

  • @jk3610 I am the same way. Have been asking my sister and SIL lots of questions. As far as mattresses I don't have one picked out yet but I have heard from other moms it doesn't make too much of a difference as long as it meets the safety regs

  • Possible stupid question for STM. Is anyone using the same mattress from first baby or buying new? My MIL says I need to buy a new mattress even though the one we have still seems to be fine. Any thoughts?
  • @Swanigam‌ I'd use the mattress again, if its still firm & isn't funky.
  • I'm planning to use the same mattress with this coming baby
  • @trollsniper‌ I do wish people were not that stupid but, at least once a week here humanity fails me.
  • Do I really need a rocker/glider?

How much is too much or too cheap for a crib?
  • @mnharkcom‌ price wise if you want to spend $5k for some special crib & no witnesses were harmed during the bank robbery, go for it. I found a Pali crib on craigslist for $80 so now I've got more $ for other things, spend what you're comfortable with. There is no right or wrong.

I'm going to skip the rocker/glider because, I simply think they're ugly & I don't need or want extra clutter in my house.

I don't think so but, you might want to eat something
  • Thanks @Ginja85‌ @trollsniper‌ and @mbm1983‌ ! I was just curious we were aiming for 150 and then however much for a mattress. Found a sturdy crib at target 285 plus free mattress reg 110 so 285 doesn't seem too horrible for both of those together.

Also thanks about the glider. I really want one and plan to nurse but I think that might end up being a luxury item if I end up getting it down the road.
  • I always breastfed my son in the living room or in my bed, so for me a rocker/ glider wasn't necessary.

If my son wasn't still using his, I would reuse it. I don't see any issues.
  • I got a mattress that is firm on one side for infants and softer on the other for toddlers. A Serta I think.

The cost of the crib doesn't matter as much as the sturdiness of it. IMO.

And I couldn't live without my rocker. It was in the porch outside. My son was born in Aug, so we spent many summer and fall nights rocking away on the porch. He loved it. But inside I didn't have one. I just nestled on the couch.
  • Thanks everyone! I was thinking it would be ok to re-use, but as my MIL said we needed to get a new one I was second guessing myself!

Haha. Good to know I wasn't the only one thinking this. It happens at work right before lunch (obviously) and I just picture the baby in my womb rolling his/her eyes and being like, "hey ma, think you can keep it down down here??"

  • May15 had a pretty good thread about glider recliners and that thread actually led me make my first large purchase!

I am not a fan of recliners but it seems like a nice idea to nurse in so I bought a swivel/glider/recliner from Costco. We got it on Friday and it seems pretty nice! I like the fabric and it is comfortable and reclines way back. If I don't end up using it a lot I can always move it somewhere else and use it.

  • I don't think there are any specific bottles. My LO wouldn't take any type of bottle for weeks when I went back to. Work, we tried everything! She finally took to a nuk bottle so we stuck with it. Dr. Brown is fine if your LO will take it, but warning * those have so many extra parts to wash compared to most other bottles!
  • Thanks! I will definitely take more bottle recommendations if anyone has them.

  • My first didn't take a bottle well at all, so for my second I bought a bottle that looked more like my boob. Since she is better in general with oral skills she might have been okay with anything, but she did drink from the bottle much better than my son.

  • Thank you @somerandomchick‌ ! Great info. I do want a rocker glider but I just can't bring myself to spend the money for it especially since it's costing as much as my crib! Maybe like you said see how the baby does at first, maybe I can ask for it as my Mother's Day present if I still want one later down the road ;) and you made some great points about the safety regulations!
  • @Ginja85‌ I'm so glad you made this thread! I'm learning a lot from everyone and nice to know other people are having some of the same questions I am too. By the way I think the mattress I'll be getting will be foam.
  • When we move into our new house my youngest will be moving into a bigger bed so I'll just use his mattress for this baby. It's always had a mattress cover on it and I bought it new for my youngest so I'm sure it'll suffice!

  • @mnharkcom I bought my glider for $120 at Walmart an tho I didn't nurse there a lot I still use it now to read her books every night!
  • Thanks! I will definitely take more bottle recommendations if anyone has them.

Neither of my kiddos liked the same ones. My youngest had colic and the only ones I found that helped with that were the Nuk ones! My oldest didn't care, he liked any bottle. I just bought one or two at a time to try different brands with my youngest until I found the right ones.

  • 1. Mattress: We have a Colgate mattress.  It has two firmnesses (is that a word?).  I believe a firmer side for newborns/infants and then a slightly less firm side for toddlers.  It's been through two kids and will be used for our third.

    2. Gliders: I don't think there is a more used piece of furniture in our house, except maybe for our beds.  I've always used it prior to naps and bedtime.  I still use it for my 2.5 yo, as part of her bedtime routine. It is in our nursery.

    3. Bottles: DD1 was BF for the first 6 weeks, at which point I switched to pumping.  She took the Medela bottles that came with the pump just fine.  However, DD2 was super picky.  I nursed her for a year, and she would only take Tommee Tippee.  They make two different kinds, one that has multiple parts for reducing gas (similar to Dr. Browns) and a regular one.

I have a possibly stupid question...my SIL has a City Mini Stroller and a Chico Keyfit car seat which fit into the stroller...how do you find out which car seats fit into which strollers? I will probably just wind up copying her, but it seems confusing to find this info...

I think you have to buy a separate adaptor with the City Mini for your car seat to fit in.

Dh and I were just at BuyBuy Baby this morning getting a lesson on car seat and stroller options (FTM). As @RHoPA1109‌ said, an adapter is needed for the City Mini. (Sounds like a great stroller; we're planning to get one/borrow one as one of our strollers, too!).

@mnharkcom‌ I got a great glider with my DD on Craigslist for $50 and recovered it. If I hadn't found it there, I wouldn't have gotten and I would have missed it for those MOTN nursing sessions!

Those are fine... I think you just have to get what your baby will like, so don't stock up on a boatload of one kind. "They" say to start out with slow flow nipples so baby doesn't get impatient waiting for your let down when nursing.

@jackieanddan1989‌ I don't have experience with the Avent bottles myself, but you might want to get a few of the smaller size bottles until your LO takes more at one feeding. On the other hand, if your LO is a big eater by that time, that might be unnecessary!
ETA: start out with slow flow nipples so that your lo doesn't get frustrated with waiting for your letdown when nursing.

  • Breast milk changes as baby grows and they say their oz needs don't really increase much cause of that. That was definitely true for us. DS1&2 never took more than 5oz in a bottle, even at a year. They loved Tommee Tippee. The base of the nipple is bigger and I have big boobs so I think that's why. We never went beyond the smallest nipple opening.

I thought Dr. Browns were a pain in the ass. That's a hell of a lot of parts to clean. I nursed and was given Dr. Browns at my shower. My son hated them, and the extra effort wasn't worth it for me. ETA I used the Playtex Drop-Ins when I started bottle feeding. I loved them.
I loved the playtex drop ins with my twins too. They were fast, convenient and worth the extra few pennies I spend on throwing out the liners and less washing for me!

Did they help a lot at BBB? Can you just kind of show up there and get some info on what fits with what? Thanks for the tip.

    edit: quotebox fail

They were AMAZING. You can absolutely just show up, which is what we did this morning at the one in Chelsea in Manhattan and the girl who helped us (Kaylon, if you happen to live in town) has worked there for three years, was amazingly knowledgable and told us that she is there every Sunday by appointment to take registry people through the whole store to advise on products they might need and comparisons, etc. It could not possibly have been a better experience, and today we were just popping in -- we'll be going back to do the entire registry.

  • FWIW for those who will be doing bottle feeds with formula: I splurged and bought a Baby Brezza kettle (approx $50-Sears). Absolutely loved it!! Its a kettle that sits on a base, you add either your boiled or bottled water (whichever is your fancy to make babys bottles with) and the kettle keeps the temperature at a perfect 37 degrees, just perfect to mix with formula. I kept it in the bathroom upstairs so it was great in the middle of the night. No standing at the stove heating in a pot or microwaving. I especially liked it because I used the playtex drop in system :)

  • My question is, Are there special bottles for those who breastfeed or are Dr. Brown bottles Ok?

There's not really any special ones, it depends on your baby though. With Jaydon we used Tommee Tippee and they were much easier for him to hold himself as he got bigger, and the wide nipple helped lessen confusion. Big perk, I emailed the company and was sent a 5oz bottle for FREE because I asked. All the other brands suggested I look in my local ads and magazines for coupons, so I liked the company already just for being so chill like that. (And that's why we'll probably stick to them for this little gal)

  • Question for 2nd time moms- do you plan to buy new nipples for your bottles?   Just wasn't sure if it was necessary.  Or if it was okay to simply boil them before your next child arrives.
  • Ok, I have a really stupid question that Google has never been a lot of help with and I am prepared for the snark... Why the hell did my belly look square in my last two pregnancies?? Seriously. No matter the placenta location or baby position, the front of my belly looked squared-off. With PJ I don't really remember, I was in the Army at the time, so I was too tired to really pay attention. Was it just random, or am I doomed to (once again) have an ugly square belly again?

    So... That's my stupid question.
(Ps- I have belly envy for everyone who will end up with a perfect and cute little round bump, with the popped-out belly button.)
