Lots of you missed my point... just sayin.

    I get your point.

Just finished reading the thread and I too think people are missing the point. If you can get pregnant easily you can have as many children as you want to and if you need help affording them, there is assistance for you. If you have difficulty getting pregnant then too bad, you can't have as many children as you want or any children at all. It is very unfair.

Although we didn't struggle too badly for this pregnancy I know that it could be different if we want to continue to have future children and I don't think it's fair that there will be no help for us to have our family.

@snedge .. just.. yes. My best friend has been struggling with infertility for 5 years, 7 IUI's, she's currently on her 5th IVF. The only thing her insurance has covered has been her ultrasounds and ONE of her medications.. everything else is out of pocket. Her H has a very good job so that they're able to afford fertility, but I see people around me all the time that don't have the means to afford it and that literally makes me ill to think about it. We struggled, but didn't have to resort to IVF. But to see people's dreams of having children fade away because insurance refuses to see fertility treatments as "necessary" is nauseating. When on the same hand you have the people that literally get pregnant every 5 minutes, that can't afford their children, can't afford their children's healthcare, or to feed their children.. but the government is all for handing over ungodly amounts of money for them to continue to have children they can't take care of. I get exactly what you're saying and it's infuriating on so many levels. Hugs.

    ETA: spelling is hard.
i would argue that the government doesn't give anyone ungodly amounts of money except the super rich and themselves.

Huh? I'm so confused by this.  The higher income earners actually pay the majority of the country's taxes.

yes, but they are also the ones getting "ungodly" amounts of money. OP was originally referring to those on government assistance. the money those people receive is definitely not ungodly.

I'm not sure if I should even touch this one, but I feel like I can't just leave it now.  Income inequality is stretched in this country, yes.  But in general, there is always going to be a level of income inequality - it's necessary.  People who go through an extensive amount of schooling and put in lots and lots of hours and networking/etc to move up should be able to earn more.  Otherwise there is no incentive to work hard and learn more.

And I will just leave it at that because I know touching on economics and politics on this site is usually pointless and futile.

@snegde I understood your point was more that it sucks how expensive IF treatment is etc but I think where it went off the rails is the mention of government assistance... People on government assistance have nothing to do with your struggle to have kids. So it just kind of came off as lashing out and being mean to The Poor (which is practically a national pastime) and that's why you got a lot of pushback. I understand that you're frustrated and I don't think you're a bad person or trying to be a jerk it anythibg It is unfair that so many who want kids struggle to have them and so many who don't want kids end up having them. It's rough. It sucks. We need better access to reproductive health for everyone, whether that means preventing babies or helping you have them. There's a LOT wrong with our medical system in the US.
I didn't take her post that way at all really. I took it as her being upset with the government and how it will support people who have children and can continue to have them but there is no help for people who have difficulty having children.

I think the bolded was not expressed in her original post either because she was saying how she is upset that there are programs to help people who have unplanned pregnancies not at the people themselves.

Her other comment was about being upset at insurance companies who cover many things that are choices and yet they are still covered (The ED drugs). However, IF is considered elective and is not covered. It's not fair.

I am not trying to talk for @snegde but I think you are misinterpreting her original post.

ETA: I do think the posts following hers started in on a lot more about "lashing out at the poor" than her original post with the talk of what food to buy and cars etc.

OH MY GOD YES. I've seen it at least 6 times today and I am so over it. It's disgusting. Can I please just go on Facebook and see how all my friends and family are doing without seeing some celebrity's ass!? I was just as annoyed when Nicki Minaj came out with her new album cover.
  • I'm bowing out of UO today too. I'm in a grumpy mood and between people judging what is/isn't in someone's grocery cart and the whole "abortion" debate that someone tried to start, I can't handle it. I'm too emotional today obviously.

I sure hope that wasn't about my post because that's totally not what I meant!!!

I don't think she meant to be mean and poor people suck but 'abusing the welfare system' and the cost of IF treatment really don't have anything to do with each other. And the comparison makes no sense. You should help me have a baby instead of helping babies that already exist not starve? Obviously that's not what she means (I hope). But... That's why one of the most important things to use assistance dollars on is children, because even IF their parents were shit heads who abuse the welfare system I don't have it in me to punish their kids I think medical insurance and the medical system is pretty fucked in this country for sure. It sucks in so many ways. But I don't think welfare is relevant at all and it doesn't make sense to bring it up

I think I'm just going to drop this because it really is too hard to have this type of conversation in writing (and I'm mobile). When the funds all come from the same place (taxes) everything really is related to each other.

i'm not offended if celebrities or other women want to show off their bodies because they are proud of it. i don't mind that. but yes to the bolded! i have seen it multiple times and am just annoyed. to me this is just another celebrity baring all and it's really not that exciting news.

I'm more so annoyed that i hate that you can't just block all shared content from all users on facebook. you have to go to everyone's individual settings.

and if there is a way to block everyone's shared content automatically someone please share this knowledge!
I mean I don't mind if it's tasteful and not trashy. But I think Kim Kardashian's and Nicki Minaj's pictures were definitely not tasteful lol. I hate that Facebook has made it so you see what everyone is liking now too. I've seen it everywhere not even because people are sharing the picture, it's just a bunch of people liking it everywhere. 8-|

I get a lot of feels when people start bringing up their judgement about people on government assistance. Most of my family is. Most of my community is. We live here because it is cheap. Wages are low too because of that though. Most work full time and still need assistance. They aren't leaching off the system. They are using a program meant to help those like them. I make a decent wage that puts me just over the threshold to qualify for assistance (i miss wic right now by $3. THREE.) We deal with it. But fuck anyone who judges my grocery cart if i ever had to be on food stamps. Poor people can have junk food too. And saving? Pfft. As soon as i get $500 in my savings here comes unknown medical expenses or the need for new brakes or tires on my ONE vehicle. Saving isn't that easy when you live paycheck to paycheck. if we're gonna continue this conversation then i have to walk away. Because it makes me emotional. And i don't feel like being emotional about it today. So i'll end with just let the poor have their fucking skittles and leave them alone. They don't have much else.
OMG, I can't believe you aren't eligible for WIC because of $3! That is crazy. I'm sorry.

  • I'm not touching some of the debates, but I was also one of those "I'll never put my kid on a leash" people until I had my DD. Never say never. I had a toddler that refused to hold hands and that would dart around at every chance she got...I used the harness not as a lazy I don't want to keep up with my kid thing, but as a if someone grabs my kid in a crowd I'll be attached safety feature.

Hahaha. I'll make sure I lead with that with future introductions IRL. "Hi my name is _____ and I hate ketchup." That way people will know I'm not normal from Day 1. Sorry to mislead you. :P

I hate tomatoes but I can eat pasta sauce and ketchup. In fact, I have to by ketchup by the bubba keg because I like to put it on everything. I used to put it on Mac and cheese as a kid.
