So, I haven't told our kids yet

I told my stepdaughter 2 weeks ago because DH was bugging me to. She's 13 and waaay more excited than I thought she would be. But I haven't told the 6 and 4 year old yet. I keep putting it off. My new plan is to wait until after I have my appointment next week (just over 14 weeks, had an u/s at 8 weeks but haven't even tried to listen for the baby at the doctor since then. Have a home doppler, it's still in there) and then wait until that Sunday evening so they can process it without input from my stepdaughter. I know once I tell them, everyone will know, but I'm pretty sure most people except my mom already know. Waiting is taking it's toll though apparently. I woke up at 5am today trying to figure out how I am going to explain to the kids how the baby got in there. No real point in this post I guess.

My 7 year old didn't ask about how the baby got in there. Although he has asked once before and we just that a mommy and daddy prayer for a baby and when the time is right their prayers and answered. He was fine with that answer and hasn't asked since.

Ironically, I'm not worried so much about the 6 year old as the 4 year old. She wants to know 'how' everything.....

We told our daughter pretty early on because she goes to the appointments with me. But she's just under 2 so I don't think she really *gets* it yet. She does enjoy the fun coloring books she gets to use when we go to "mommy's baby doctor" and pets my tummy and tells me the baby is there. But I don't think she realizes yet this baby will eventually come out and come home to live with us haha.

Well i haven't told my kids either for they are 6,4,3, and 8 mnths. This time im having twins and i really don't know how I'm going to tell them that two more babies will be here in may....i know three of them don't and won't understand anything but my 6 yr old is very very smart....plus i think he already know....he keeps asking me how do babies eat inside of a mommy when she's pregnant...plus he keeps asking me do your feet hurt mommy or your back and he always want to rub my feet or my back.....it's really surprising to me though....

I have a 6yr old and 3yr old, and they handled it fine. Both were excited! The 6 yr old understood it more than the 3 yr old, but once I showed them the ultrasound pic, they were overjoyed.

we haven't told DS yet, he's 3. I have an elective US scheduled for the 20th, so our plan is to tell him the day before and then he is going with us to the US so he can "see".

My 8 year old has never asked how not even at 6 when I was pregnant with DS3. My 15 year old did tell me we should watch more TV. He knows how babies are made.

I'm all about answering questions in an honest, but age-appropriate manner. It's never too early to start talking about sex- that way, you have an established history of being the go-to person.

I should note, at this point it's all theoretical- my daughter just turned 2 in August and I haven't outright told her yet. I think at this point it's a little too abstract- I'm going to wait until I'm a little bigger so she has something to see.

One interesting point- I've read it's a good idea to say the baby is in Mommy's "womb" instead of "tummy"- not only is it more accurate, it's a little less confusing.

We told our kids after we got our genetic testing back. We wanted to be able to tell them that they were getting either a brother or a sister (they're getting a sister!). My SO's 16 year old son was not happy. My 11 year old son was rather indifferent. Our 5 year old daughter was overjoyed. But be prepared to answer the "how did it get in there question." For some reason it never dawned on me that my daughter would ask that and I totally stumbled over my response.

I have told my 13yr, 9yr, 6yr but my 4yr still doesn't understand yet! But due to my loss of my daughter who wAs born still my 13yr is worry about me and if it's going to happen again! I told him we just have to pray everything goes great! My daughters were so excited they wanted to know if I already know what the baby is! I told them not yet!! They want another sister!! No questions about how baby got in here!! Lol!!

Good luck! I told my boys yesterday! My 4 year old didn't really care either way, my 3 year old wants a girl baby and my 2 year old asked if we could have a bear baby lol. Thankfully they're too young for the "how" questions!

Obviously how you tell kids and answer questions is totally your business. Just thought I would add my mom's explanation for young children (I.e. < 5 or so). This helped my little sister understand my first niece and it helped many nieces and nephews understand siblings. (In which case answer came from that child's parents). She would just say "mommy and daddy have a special way of loving each other that makes a baby". If the child asked more, an age appropriate book was produced. Often, that answer was enough.

"We'll talk about this more when you're a little older," usually works for me when the questions get too in-depth (and we WILL, too!), but when I told my step son last time around, he was six I think, and TOTALLY a question-asker. But he wasn't all that curious about it, so it wasn't too bad. Explaining how it gets out was probably the stickiest one to phrase for a 6yo. Thankfully, I get a break this time - the now 8yo already knows the drill and the 2yo is too young to really even grasp that there's another person on the way!

The how questions make me glad my son is not quite two. My students however are five and six years old. They found out unexpectedly and immediately started asking questions. I was more than happy to say that is a question you should ask your mom and dad at home.
