Breastfeeding

Anyone's LO with Milk/Soy Protein Intolerance?

I'm looking for some advice/a pep talk. This first month of breastfeeding was rough and now that I've finally figured it out, LO has been diagnosed with a milk and soy protein allergy. Has anyone successfully continued BFing a LO with this issue and how was your experience? The diet seems super restrictive- LO is worth it, but I'm worried about eating enough calories when so many things are off limits.

Re: Anyone's LO with Milk/Soy Protein Intolerance?

  • Yes! DS had issues and it looks like DD is having them too. When DS was having his issues I started a blog with some ideas of what to eat. I was terrible at keeping it up but now that I've cut dairy and soy again I'm trying to post more. Take a peek at www.dairyandsoyfreedishes.blogspot.com

It's tough at first and you have to do a lot of research and label reading but if you're creative you can find plenty of foods to enjoy! Good luck!

  • Us too!  There are quite a few of us.  There's a check in on AP on Fridays and you're welcome to join us.

I know its daunting at first, but it does get easier and really our whole family is healthier now.  Processed GMO Soy is actually pretty nasty stuff.

Some hints; Organic tostitos are fine, Hyland's teething tablets contain milk ingredients, This company makes dairy and soy free chocolate https://www.enjoylifefoods.com/our_foods/chocolate_bars.html, and our bread maker is finally being used.

  • DD is allergic to cow's milk protein.  She isn't super allergic, so I don't have to avoid hidden dairy (I can have bread or something with milk in it, for example), but I avoid all obvious dairy (milk, cheese, butter, ice cream).

It's definitely hard.  I can't even imagine soy also because soy is in EVERYTHING!!

There's a food sensitivity check in on the AP board on Fridays.  Also, if you have specific questions, page Webmistress on te AP board.  She's given up a lot of stuff and is still breastfeeding her son!

  • I've given up all dairy/soy and we're trying eggs and red meat this week.  We've seen less blood in his poop and no green ones. He's also a lot happier.

The diet is really rough at first.  It's hard to eat prepackaged foods.  However, we make a lot of our meals from scratch, so it's easier to avoid.  Rice milk and coconut milk are great additions to coffee/teas.  You can get good calories from tree nuts/guacamole/chicken/turkey...  There's a book called the MSPI guidebook/cook book that was very helpful to us.  There are companies out there like Casbah that don't use soy or dairy.  You've got to read labels though.

For me, BFing my DS was worth the diet.  I'm hoping that the mucous in his poo clears up in a few weeks.  It's hard, but I'm adamant on BFing, so I'm going to do what it takes.
