Has anyone's water broken in a public place?

I was at work yesterday and baby was really active. I made the comment to a co worker that it felt as if she was going to kick her way out today. Obviously I know this won't happen but we got on the topic of what would happen if my water broke at work. I have a retail job so It would be a little awkward if that was to happen.
Anyway, my question is has anyone had their water break in a public place or know someone that has? This is my third pregnancy and my water broke at home with my first and in the hospital with my second. I'm not asking out of concern; just curious.

Re: Has anyone's water broken in a public place?

  • Mine did. That was fun! :::sarcasm::: Everyone around me freaked out and wouldnt let me drive myself home. I should have just left, but I was kind of freaking out too so I waited for H to come pick me up. It took him an hour to get to me. Thankfully I had a towel, although I soaked through it within minutes. So keep several towels and a trash bag on hand. Thats what I'm doing this go around.

I hope it wont break at Target or something. I really feel sorry for anyone that has to clean up my amniotic fluid   :-&     I left a full on river trail from the car, through the parking lot, and all down the hallways at L&D

  • I was joking about this happening at work one day (having your water break while teaching. Yikes!) and my coworkers told me it happened to a woman while she was presenting something at a faculty meeting. I would die. So glad it happened to me at home in bed. If it had happened just a few hours earlier that same day, I would've been on a field trip in NYC. Gives me anxiety just thinking about it lol.

  • Someone I know told me last week that hers broke in the middle of a meeting at work. Later the leader of the meeting told her it was the best meeting he'd ever led -- it had tangible results!! (A wee baby named Isabel!)

This amused me no end because the meeting was within the Canadian government. I've always suspected that the majority of government meetings show few tangible results!!
  • My Co workers have been joking that they are going to put a kiddie pool under my chair just in case. :) my mil's water broke while she was at work at sears. She was not in labor very long and almost had him in the store! So hoping I'm at home when it happens!
  • This is a legit fear of mine.

My water broke at home with both of my girls and I'd like for it to break in the hospital this time. You know, since I can plan it and everything :)

In addition to the orgasmic labor of course ;)

  • Wow - mine didn't break until I was 9.5 cm and about to start pushing. It was pretty dramatic when it did (shot across the room) but at least hospitals are used to cleaning that kind of thing up =)

I'm hoping it happens the same way again!

  • I've had a few coworkers finish their shift after their water broke! I hope that doesn't happen to me. I hope my bag stays intact to make labor a little less painful.

Mine broke in the hospital last time. I told the nurse I thought my catheter came out cuz I didn't feel a pop just a bunch of fluid, I was terrified my pee had spilled everywhere.

Sort of on the same subject... Did most of you put some sort of waterproof mattress pad on your bed? My H just asked me about this and it hadn't really occurred to do it (don't really want the crinkly sound but also don't want fluid all over my expensive mattress if it were to happen that way)

  • My stepmom said her water broke at work on the warehouse floor in front of all men, and she was so embarrassed that she just backed into a corner and stood in the puddle until a lady coworker finally walked by and she asked the lady to cover her as she walked back to her desk...

I have one, it's to keep our mattress under warranty. They aren't really crinkly if you get a decent one, similar to any other mattress pad really.

  • Thanks @misskilljoy‌ ! We have a fabric one now but not water resistant.
  • Mine broke while I was walking to the bathroom in a Sheetz (a gas station/convenient store/MTO food place). Yup. Right infront of where you order food. Thought I started peeing myself since it was just a little stream running down my leg. Quickly changed my mind when I kept getting a gush of fluid every time I tried to get up off the toilet. Luckily nothing ended up on their floors and no one knew except DH, my dad, and myself.

My labor with DS1 was a breeze until they broke my water in the hospital. I hardly felt any contractions! But oh Lordy...when they broke water, it all went down hill from there. Super painful!

    Ditto!

  • My water broke at the hospital but it broke IN the elevator on my way up to L&D. There was so much fluid! It full on gushed out for about 10 minutes. Even my nurse commented that she had never seen that much amniotic fluid haha.

I've never really given much thought or stressed too much about when/where my water will break. The way I see it is that it's a natural part of labour and it just means that it's go time!
  • This is a definite fear!  I am planning on working right up to my due date, so the closer I get the more I think about it.  Of course, we have carpeted floors.  I have a towel in my cube closet that I can grab and sit on until DH comes to get me.  Ideally, it will either happen at home or is something that won't happen at the beginning of labor at all.

Thanks! The OB broke mine after a couple hours of pushing then DD was crowning soon after. The burning overshadowed any pain from contractions.

  • @abcmom12‌ no leather seats eh?
  • Never had SROM. My water with #4 broke when I birthed his body. I had very strong membranes during my last three pregnancies. I don't imagine I'll experience SROM this time, either. But it would be funny if it did occur in public.

nope, fabric and since it's a 2014, its very much a NEW car to me, expecially since it's my first new car.  soaking DH's fabric seat, eh, it's a 2007 and he can take it to be cleaned lol

I've threw an old blanket in my car for this very reason. I just got my car a couple months ago and would be so upset if my water broke all over the seats.
  • good news is only 10-15% of women's water breaks before they go into labor.  I guess when the contractions get regular you need to go on water alert lol

  • I read that only 15% of women's water breaks before they go to the hospital. Wondering if that's true.
  • My midwife broke mine after 2 hours of pushing. He came right out after that. Hoping mine breaks at the birth center this time. I really don't want to have to clean up my own amniotic fluid.

Im assuming the 10-15% # must be true because you rarely hear of it happening outside of the hospital.

My water broke and I was still having no contractions. They got a teeny tiny bit worse a few hours later, but nothing unbearable. I was started on Pitocin once I arrived at the hospital because even 3 hours later I was still not really contracting. And I had Niagra Falls coming out of me. It was a lot of water.

  • My water always breaks before labor starts. With my first was just a slow trickle for 3 days before he finally came. 2nd water gushed on kitchen floor I was putting groceries away. Was so glad I made it home though. And 3rd I had peed then got up felt like I peed myself wipes got up happened again so I knew. By the time I made it across the room my pants were soaked through. So yeah real fear of mine!
  • I work retail, too, and I hope it breaks at work where a bitchy customer will slide and fall in it.  'Tis the season. >:)

  • @snowbaby1214 I'm sure if my water broke in front of a customer they would still expect me to help them. My biggest fear is water breaking during Black Friday madness. Yikes!!!!
  • Mine broke at home. I had a lot of pressure and thought I had to pee do it broke on the toliet! Yay for no
    Clean up!
  • My water broke at home with my first...thankfully! Less than an hour before it broke I had been out getting a pedicure and buying groceries!

My Dr broke my water after my epidural with #2.

Curious how this time will go. For some reason I keep having the feeling that it will happen at work. But I work in L&D so that wouldn't be terribly inconvenient for me. ;-)
