Lower left abdominal pain....

I'm almost 21 weeks, and this morning I woke up with pretty intense cramping in my lower left abdomen, basically just above my pubic hair line, and just right of my hip bone. It was intense enough that it hurt to stand up straight...... and it's continued throughout the day.

It's constant, so I'm googling round ligament pain, but that seems more like it comes and goes..... this has been constant, and gets worse when I stand, but I can still feel a dull ache when lying down/breathing, and when I press with my fingers I can feel the sore spot..... anyone have any clue what this could be? I tried googling it, but basically google just tells me it's the worst thing ever and to rush to hospital, so I thought I'd see if this is just a normal growing pain?

No bleeding, and I've had my 20 week ultrasound and nothing strange came up.... so I'm hoping it's nothing and I can sleep it off.

  • No idea either. I would suggest more rest and drink plenty of water. If it does persist or gets worse, I would call your OB to make sure all is well. Keep us updated hun

  • Ya... I didn't think much of it earlier... just assumed it was some cramp that would eventually go away, or the round ligament thing....... I'm just taking it easy watching mad men with some herbal tea tonight....

I've been coughing a lot today too, so it's not helping..... Maybe I pulled a muscle or something in my sleep? ugh.

    Hope it's gone by morning.

  • I'm sorry you are in pain.  I don't have any experience or knowledge of what it might be.  I agree with pp to call you on call OB or labor and delivery if it continues or gets worse.  Hope you feel better soon!

  • Thanks everyone!!!

Well, google says ectopic pregnancy, a ruptured cyst, a tumor.... ummmmm hopefully not!!! I'd assume that any of those things would have shown up during the ultrasound.....

  • I did poo this morning...... but then again, I did eat Indian food last night so maybe there's more in there? It was a pretty big meal.

@kadeelou is it usually only one-sided pain?

  • I had a similar all day pain last Saturday. It was to the left of my belly button and sore to the touch, hurt when I breathed hard, and pretty constant. I called the nurse line and the nurse said it was likely round ligament pain (even though everything I read online said that doesn't last more than a few minutes) and to take it easy. She said to lay down on my side with a pillow supporting my belly. I did that Saturday night and the pain was gone when I woke up Sunday. Now I am sure to sleep with the pillow supporting my belly every night as to avoid sore muscles.

Ya, that sounds similar!!! I know that sometimes when I try and roll over in bed or get out of it, it feels like I pull a muscle..... so maybe it was something like that. Or maybe I'm actually "popping" as they say, and this is just stretching of the muscles to accommodate my belly....hopefully it's gone tomorrow. I'll try sleeping with a pillow and see if that helps! Thanks for the tips!!!

  • I had a really similar pain today.... sharp cramping feeling in my far lower left abdomen.  It got so bad that I had to stop what I was doing and go lay down.  And then a little while later, I pooped, and within an hour it was gone.  B-)  Maybe you've got some more in there?  Or it could just be something new stretching and aching.  I hurt myself rolling over in bed the other night and was sore the next day - so lame to get hurt while sleeping!  lol

I hope you feel better soon!

  • I had the same issue the other day. I was googling to try to find an answer nothing substantial. It eventually went away the next day.
  • It sounds like a strained ligament.  I have a cold, so now I have a strained one from all the sneezing and nose blowing. :/

  • I've had similar issues with both my pregnancies. Especially if I'm walking for long periods of time, it can sometimes last for days. I chalk it up to ligament pain. I remember with DD I had it one time for a few days...I couldn't even sit up it hurt so bad.

Obviously if it gets worse, go to the hospital. Until then, Put a warm water bottle on your abdomen, and take some tylenol.

  • I've had similar pain and as some PP's have said, it ended up being gas/constipation. Stool softener helps!

  • Update:

So the pain was still there yesterday morning, but seems to have gotten better throughout the day and I don't notice it today. So yay. Probably was some sort of pulled or strained muscle from coughing so damn much, or maybe from growing, as I've noticed my belly is harder and sticking out a bit more then usual lately. At least it was nothing serious!!
