Let's do this. Maybe we can actually have some unpopular ones this week!

  • @melody921 I totally agree that something for the house is not a gift for me.  The only way I'd see it as a gift for me is if it gets me out of doing something I really don't want to do, e.g. painting.  But I think it depends on each person and what they would really appreciate and value.

  • All of it. I don't find it catchy, soothing or the bringer of good memories. For some (unknown) reason, just annoys the crap out of me.

  • Baby showers do not require seating charts (brought to you by my SIL's mom, who is insisting my mom and I are classless for thinking people can just sit wherever).

  • My opinion on the house items as gifts is: If I ask for it "Will you get me a Dyson for X-mas?" that is a gift. If I do not ask for it, it is not a gift. DH and I have very different styles and tastes so anything that is bought for the house is usually a compromise by one of us so we have to have major discussions.

  • I could care less if a gift for the house is a gift for me. If I want it, I want it therefore it's a gift. That being said we're doing the light kitchen remodel after the new year and vacation in a couple weeks. We aren't even doing stockings. I'm totally fine with this. The vacation and kitchen are our gifts.

I LOVE Christmas music. It makes my heart happy. Hearing it in September at the store, not so much. After Halloween OK.

  • I think gift shopping off lists sucks major wad.  A good gift is something that wasn't provided on a list.  Some people are harder to shop for, so asking for some ideas are okay in that case.  I am probably the easiest person on the planet to shop for, and everyone just asks for a list :(  Boo.

Just get me a Starbucks gift card and we're good. I need nothing else. It is a gift that gives to me year round. I am gonna get my daily Starbucks regardless, so you'll be saving me money.

ETA: oops meant to say...I like having a list so that you get what you want. More of a generic list.  Like last year MIL asked for jewelry (costume of course).  She likes big, chunky, guady stuff and socks.  Got the jewelry and lots of holiday socks.

I feel this way too! I love so many things, so it makes me feel like people aren't being creative if they have to ask.

  • I used to enjoy holiday shopping and my gifts were always thoughtful and meaningful. I just don't have the time now. Give me your list so I can go about my business and get it over with.

  • @kissty I see that, too, and sometimes I feel that way as a gift-giver.

  • I hate HATE gifts for the house to me. I actually have hobbies and an ongoing list on Amazon and every effing year I get tablecloths or ugly ass pillow cases from my ILs. It's like they just hate me. Meanwhile DH gets something to play with, which makes it super awkward when gift opening is over and I am just sitting there drinking coffee while DH is doing something (reading, putting together something, setting up a new electronic..)

Now that we have L it is easier, I just smile, say thank you, and play with her toys. Ha!

  • I completely agree @melody921,  unless you ask for a house related gift. I really wanted a rumba and DH thought it was ridiculous.  So my parents bought me one for Christmas, i was ecstatic!  I love that vacuuming robot :)

  • As I've gotten older I guess I view presents for the house as a gift for me. Mainly because it's something I need/want. This year I asked my parents for WeatherTech car mats for my car. I want them but don't want to pay the price for them so give me then as a gift. I've gotten so boring in my "old" age.

  • Tell me about the rumba!  I am really curious!

I think it's really helpful to have a list, especially for other people's kids.  If only to know what size they are now, what they're into this month...that kind of stuff.  And I'd rather give a list so my family knows what would be nice for me.  And buys the right size, because my cousin persisted in believing I was her size for years even though we're about four dress sizes off from each other.

Frankly, not every gift I give at the holidays needs to be a creative masterwork.  I go all in on a few things for people I'm closest to, but there's no way I'm going to nail it for some relatives, so screw it.  Give me a list, and I'll do a lovely job wrapping the gift you asked for.

  • I like being given lists.  It's not because I don't have time, I'm just not a great gift giver.  I'd rather get someone something I know they want than something they won't use.  That being said, we've basically stopped exchanging gifts between my brothers and I, because it's not meaningful anymore.  It's become even more difficult, especially as we get older and we can buy the things we want.

its like the lazy womans vacuum.  you can just set it to vacuum and then off walk away.  it is louder than i expected so we set it to do the living room / family room when we are upstairs in bed or our bedrooms when we are downstairs but still much quieter than an actual vacuum.  you can only do one room (or room and hallway it's a pretty large area - i guess it depends too if you have pets.  we don't) before you empty it but it cleans the room and returns to its home base when its finished.  You can also set it vacuum when you are not home but we haven't used that feature as i am too worried it would set off our motion detectors on on the security alarm.

they sell them at a lot of places, bed bath beyond and costco for less

I absolutely love it.   I cannot tell you the last time i actually used a real vacuum.  Although it doesn't do stairs (but is smart enough not to fall down the stairs :) )

  • I have a lot of UOs today.

-I think egg nog is gross
-Starbucks delivery?  Seriously.  Knock that off.  You're going to order a coffee to be delivered?!  I cannot get behind beverage delivery, unless someone starts delivering margaritas or something equally delicious.
    -Margaritas = gross when blended.
-I don't like getting gift cards for kids.  Especially ones that are little.  If you can't come up with a Christmas list at 8 that doesn't revolve around Amazon gift cards for your tablet, I think that's pretty sad.  Gift cards for 12+?  Yea.  That's the start of hard ages, so I get wanting to pick out your own clothes and what not.  But 8?  Come on.

Speaking of gifts, I really wanted to just tell my family that we're overstocked on toys and clothes and that what we'd really like is a gift certficate to the zoo so we can renew our zoo membership....Pot, this is kettle....
Seriously. I saw that and I wondered who would actually have a $5 drink delivered to their house. I get it. I really would have loved to have a drink delivered when I was on mat leave and it was snowy & cold, but I never would have.

I only like non-frozen margs. mmm, Marg. A new Mexican joint just opened down the street...

We're so overrun with toys. It's crazy. I'm getting nervous about people overdoing it at Christmas.

Beverage delivery is stupid bc my latte will be cold by the time I get it.

  • I love list shopping! My IL's are awesome at this, and it makes Christmas (or any other holiday) so much less awkward. They usually throw in a few random 'I saw this and thought of you' things, which are often hits also. My parents, on the other hand, used to be good/thoughtful gift givers, but now they've regressed. Last year I asked my mom for the Naked 2 palate and she said she was probably just going to spend the same amount of money on cheaper eye shadows, so I could 'have more'. No, mom, I don't want 345 dollar store eye shadows in shades I will never wear. I also have gift giving anxiety, so I would way rather know that the person definitely wanted the thing that was in the box with 'from: jessica' on it.

I need to hear all about the roomba!!

As I said in yesterday's gift thread, I don't view household purchases as gifts for me. It's one thing if DH and I decide that in lieu of exchanging big gifts at Christmas, we will put the money toward something for the house. But I am not OK with him buying living room curtains and saying they're for me. Last time I checked, four of us live in the house, so they're for everyone.

ETA: I am happy to receive household gifts from other people, like our parents, because then it's for both of us.
I figure either the money for the curtains I want have to come out of my spending money or I ask for it as a gift and it comes from his money. Win win to me! Last year I asked for a new purse and shoes. I don't have anything like that that I want this year so curtains is my number two want. Want because we don't need curtains. We have perfectly fine curtains now. Same with the coffee table. Total want.

95% of the decor/stuff in our house (excluding toys) is totally for me.

Same here. DH could care less if we used blankets for curtains.

Is that how it is going to work? I thought it would be a minimum purchase so it was more like catering with coffee.

That was my thought, too--that it was more geared toward offices and whatnot that had big groups putting in orders?
