Our weekly thread to discuss issues with other moms, share recipes, complain about pricking your fingers, or worry about blood glucose levels.

I'm linking the previous threads here, because we discuss a lot of issues that new people may want to peruse, plus, RECIPES!

  • 1. How far along are you?

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
I have three appointments this week. Wednesday is my last appointment at my regular OBs office (with the sub OB) to do my GBS, then Thursday is my weekly NST/BPP at the MFM office, and then Friday I have an appointment to meet my new OB who will deliver me.
    3. How are you feeling in general?
I'm good. Tired, but that's to be expected being 8 months pregnant. :) I've been working in the office the past week, so having to actually get dressed and be around people has been a nice change of pace, but I'll be glad to be working from home again.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
My numbers have been stellar the past several days. No numbers have been too high. I did have a big blood sugar crash on Thursday night, but I just got to eat some Halloween candy to get it back up.
GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?
Yes. I did this after delivering both girls, and it really is a pretty good way to eat in general. I won't be so strict about watching every bite of carbs that goes in my mouth, but definitely planning to keep it up a bit better this time.

    1. How far along are you?
    33 weeks
    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
BPP and visit with perenatologist tomorrow
    3. How are you feeling in general?
Feeling good for the most part, except some trouble sleeping the last few nights. Just feel restless and uncomfortable and unable to unwind and fall asleep.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
The last three days have been awful!! My numbers are completely out of whack!! Going from 70 to 138 back to 80's and just all over the place. No clue what is going on. Hopefully they can shed some light tomorrow. I'm already taking meds, so we'll see if they up the dose. Had a pretty stressful weekend and skipped some snacks, so I'm wondering if that is what caused all the mayhem.
GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?
I've actually been thinking about that and I think I might. It's so much better for your metabolism to eat often anyway! Plus I find that I've gotten used to eating every 2 - 3 hours and get cranky and starving now if I don't.
  • @lionyloo32 Yeah this whole pesky working in the office thing is cramping my bump at work style. :D

  • 1. How far along are you? 32 weeks

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? Saw MFM for the GD for the first time on Friday.  They were happy with my results.  I go back in 4 weeks and call in my numbers once a week.

    3. How are you feeling in general?  With respect to the GD, feeling pretty good.  A lot less swelling since I've been on the diet.  Just general 3T tiredness.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?  I had a high number at lunch today but can't figure out why.  Generally my numbers are good but this is the second time I've been high for no discernible reason.  MH thinks it has to do with snacks; my nutritionist does not require me to eat snacks and occasionally I miss one or I have one a little late (maybe too close to meal time?)  It's a process and I'm still trying to figure it all out.

GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?  I think that increasing protein intake has been pretty important for me and is generally making me feel better.  I tend to overdo it on the carbs and so I'll definitely still try to apply the GD principles to my meals after LO arrives.

  • 1. How far along are you? 33w 1d 2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? my OB called last week and told me that my growth scans have all been excellent, so need need for NSTs. I also had a low Papp-a score, so was anticipating NSTs. I have another US one week from today. Fingers crossed he his growth is still on track. 3. How are you feeling in general? The past couple weeks I have felt great. I have energy and am getting stuff done. 4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? I have experimented with eating a little frozen yogurt. Some days my numbers are still fine and other days the number is a little high. I have really been tempted to cheat the past few days. I am really hungry and the veggies apwith chicken weren't cutting it. Had some beef and salmon over the weekend, so I think I can face chicken breast again this week. Anyone else struggling with saying no to foods? Has anyone cheated? I'm not on meds and my numbers have been good...I just need to try some new GD recipes so I don't go nuts on this diet. GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD? I feel better not eating so many carbs, but I am definitely looking forward to incorporating a few of them back in my diet.

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
I had an NST on Sunday at L&D. They had nothing to say. Have to wait til Wednesday for my BPP with new MFM, endocrine visit and OB appt. should be a super fun day

    3. How are you feeling in general?
Achy. It's getting difficult to be on my feet more than a few hours. As a nurse (and a person) that blows.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
Still haven't figured out fasting issues. Insulin is now up to 14U before bed. This morning was the first reading under 90 in a while (85). We will see what tomorrow brings. My post meal #s are almost always great. I'm just on insulin before bed and watching sugar intake.

GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?
Honestly, not really. The major changes I've made are limiting carbs, and sugar. I never really ate much of either anyway. So i would like to go back to my occasional sweet treat or bread w dinner. I hate fake sugar and feel like it does more harm anyway.

    Thanks @Bowlwoman for the check-in!

    1. How far along are you? 35+2 today!

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? My past few NSTs revealed I do have high-normal amniotic fluid. My doctor said it's still sometimes common even with controlled GD, and with larger babies (she's measuring about 1-2 weeks ahead, but has been pretty much the entire pregnancy).

    3. How are you feeling in general? Let's just say I'm ready to meet this baby!

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? Nope, everything has be pretty controlled. Even on Halloween!

GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD? I do definitely plan on incorporating some of it. I know I'll probably go "nuts" the first few weeks, but if anything, I'm DEFINITELY aware of looking at the carbs now. I never knew prior to GD what that really meant!

Question: Are you ladies planning on going full-term and letting the baby decide when it's ready to come, or getting induced? Because I have GD, as well as low papp-a, I do not plan on going past my due date. I am considering a 39 week induction. My OB said that they no longer induce for GD alone (she said in the past they used to) but that these days, nothing is done differently. I am hoping that she comes naturally around 39 weeks or so, but don't want to be too optimistic about that. Just curious what other GD ladies are planning on doing.

  • How far along are you? 34 weeks today

Anything new in the medical front? Just a general vist with my OB Wednesday.

How are you feeling in general? Pretty good in general. The usual 3T aches, pains and fatigue

Any issues with number, meds, food? Number good this past week and this weekend I did not have any out of range. Hoping for the doctor to have me wait two weeks one last time before going weekly anyway.

GTKY: Do you plan incorrporate GD after having baby and no longer GD? Most definetly. I will not be as hard core and precise about my carbs. I do not like to statistics of those who have GD and end up with diabetes later in life. This whole thing has been a wake up call to me. Diabetes is very rampant in my family and being overweight I need to change/wake up call.

  • @bayareagirl2011‌ I have low Papp a too and mine is saying she will induce at 39 weeks. I am talking to our baby every day asking to please a few days before that on his own. I hope he listens. :-). Also, our doula has given us a prescription to induce before they medically do it. It is pretty much just sex, exercise, spicy foods, acupuncture, sex, spicy food, and more sex. :-). I will give it a try a few days before they want to give me pitocin.

Thanks - I was wondering if I was crazy for choosing an induction since a few of my friends (and DH even) sort of frowned upon it, warning me of the downsides. Sigh. I will try the "prescription" as long as DH is up for it. The last time we did, the baby decided she wanted to join the party, so it was over REALLY fast.

  • @bayareagirl2011 My OB said induction at 39 weeks for this one. I was induced at 40w2d with DD1, because my OB wouldn't let me go past 40 weeks. We induced at 38w5d with DD2 for GD as well (and that was the last day that week my OB was on call).

I'm surprised your OB said they don't induce for GD anymore alone, because that's not the info I'm getting from my doctors (OB and MFM).

Interesting!! Yeah, my MFM and OB both said the same thing. My OB mentioned that lung development for GD babies tend to be a week behind, so that induction prior to 39 weeks wasn't recommended anymore? The induction was more me wanting it, than them suggesting it was the best thing for me. I'm more paranoid because I have the low papp-a too. Thanks for letting me know, I feel a little better about my decision.

    Second NST this wed.

    3. How are you feeling in general?
Like crap. Getting over a cold, dealing with RLP, sciatica, BH's, bedrest, and I am so freaking tired. Extremely ready for December.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
Since being on modified bedrest I have noticed my numbers getting higher. I am really hoping its just a hormone surge and they go back to normal. Everything else has been good.

GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?
Eh. Yes and no. I definitely won't be limiting carbs as much (I miss pasta and bread so bad) but I think going through this experience will help me eat a little bit more balanced meals and be more conscious of what I am actually eating.

MFM appt this week (bpp and nst) and OB appt. And surgery appointment because I have an umbilical hernia (good times).

    3. How are you feeling in general?
Tired.  I am ready for her to be here.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
My numbers have been stellar. Even when I cheated today at lunch for my baby girl's birthday.

GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?
Yes and no.  I have always eaten pretty healthy.  I do need to up my protein afterwards and continue to eat every few hours. I am really bad about skipping snacks when I am not pregnant.

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
Had a growth scan. He passed with flying colors weighs about 5 pounds and 12 oz. And scored an 8/8 for the bpp. Ob and np are impressed with my numbers and i have my biweekly nst next tuesday.
    3. How are you feeling in general?
Pretty good. I am super tired and hungry all the time. It makes spacing out meals for testing a little diffucult. Therehas been no talk of induction or anything except that if i went into labor now they would not stop it.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
Had 2 numbers over 120 all others where under. She actually asked if i was eating enough. Just gave her this look like i eat everything within reason.
GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?
I will be i feel better since im getting more quality food.
  • 1. How far along are you? 34w1d
    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? BPP today.  Baby is doing well.  Just big.  Measuring 4 (yikes!!) weeks ahead.  And it's breech.  The baby has changed positions every week for the past three weeks.  The doctor is concerned that it is quickly running out of run to flip.  I'm trying to remain optimistic. A c-section was never on my radar so I should probably prepare myself for that possibility.
    3. How are you feeling in general?  Still feeling good but have a sore lower back at times.  Typical 3rd tri stuff.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? Numbers have been good.  Even sneaking Halloween candy at meals and getting good numbers.  Score.
GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?  After my first, the biggest thing I took away from the diet was balancing carbs with protein.  Both at meals and snacks.  I can't even let my toddler eat mac and cheese without adding chicken, beef, or salmon for protein.  Just like last time, I'll probably go back to eating cereal for breakfast:)

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?
I have an appointment on Thursday.  Its an ultrasound - I'm not sure if its just a growth check or what.

    3. How are you feeling in general?
I feel okay in general.  I've been having some aches and pains.  I went to the chiropractor yesterday and he really helped with relieving some of the pain - especially the lower belly pain I was having because of an extremely taut round ligament.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?
Nothing crazy.  There were meals I knew I would be over because of what I ate.  We went to see our friends' new house.  I ate all the chips, guacamole, hummus, halloween candy and pizza.  I ended up with a 150 after all of that.

GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?
I'm currently working off of a meal plan that a nutritionist had given to me a few years ago when I was working out a lot.  She based it on my risk for developing diabetes.  Its def something I'll follow going forward but not as strictly.

  • Hey ladies!  Happy "Thank God I don't have to see any more campaign commercials" day! :)

    1. How far along are you? 34w2d

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week? First NST & BPP is today @ MFM, and another NST w/ my regular OB appt on Friday.  I Have a feeling these twice weekly tests are going to become cumbersome really quick!

    3. How are you feeling in general? Tired, excited, nervous!  The end is approaching so quickly!

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? Yeah, second 1/2 of last week my fasting numbers went way wonky - likely from just a hormone surge and baby growth spurt, but they doubled my dose of glyburide anyway.  So now i'm at 5mg w/ dinner.  Bad numbers really frustrate me - It would be one thing if I new the high number was because of the cupcake or something else bad that I ate (and believe me, there have been a few).  But when I know i've followed the diet and watched my carb portions and still get a high number, I get really down on myself.  I don't like not being in control of my own body.

GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD? Absolutely.  The nutrition counselling I got was very eye opening.  And with all the trouble I've been having with the fasting #'s, I think that puts me at even higher risk for Type II later on. Better to keep up with better eating habits now than try and struggle with this again when i'm older.  But I am definitely looking forward to not feeling guilty for eating 1/2 a piece of banana bread for dessert either... :)
  • RE the induction talk above. I just realized that my ob and I have not really talked about it. So far we are treating the pregnancy like a normal pregnancy. I.e. baby will come when he's ready. He was measuring in the 68th percentile at the last US 4 weeks ago, so there's been no need for concern. I have a BPP today, so we'll see if he's still on track.

From what I hear induction is awful in terms of prolonging labor and making contractions more painful much earlier on. Unless medically necessary, I don't want to be induced for those reasons.
  • 1. How far along are you?

    32 weeks
    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?

nothing this week. Dr. Visit last week was good. Just measuring a little big.
    3. How are you feeling in general?

Just tired mainly. Getting backaches while at work since I walk and stand around a lot. Just need to remember to take breaks.
    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake?

One number one point high after a baby shower. Still spilling some ketones. Trying to stop that without screwing my numbers.
GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?

I did this diet for a while before. So I will keep most of it in the rotation since I know how to make it and it tastes good. However, I will add in a slice of pizza!! I miss pizza!
  • I forgot to answer the induction question.  I have a scheduled c/section at 38 weeks. This is my 3rd c/section. Baby is measuring 3-4 weeks ahead (but this is typical for me, I grow big babies).

For those of us on our second and third babies, we have some idea of how we grow babies. All three of my pregnancies have been pretty similar in terms of my GD, how my weight has fluctuated, and baby size. It's the FTMs that have it harder, because they don't have any data points on how their bodies grow babies yet. :)

Very true. I was shocked by my first because I had no idea I would grow such big babies. I have found myself telling the MFM doctors this time to calm down, this was typical for me.

Yup, we're getting into the home stretch. I will have my baby within a month, because we'll schedule an induction no later than the first week in December. I still have so much to get done!

Wow! My EDD is 12-25. And baby was in the 72 percentile for growth. So, we haven't really discussed early induction yet. While I don't want early induction interventions, I get the need. And I'd be ok, truthfully, with not having a 12lb baby...

  • As far as inductions go, my OB said as long as he passes the NST's and GD is diet controlled she will let me go to my due date but not past it.

  • Hey ladies!  I'm so behind this week.  It's been a crazy one so far.

    1. How far along are you?  34+3

    2. Anything new on the medical front (doctor appointments, nonstress tests, ultrasounds) this week?  Just my 2 weekly non-stress tests plus OB visits.

    3. How are you feeling in general?  Pretty done which is terrible since I hopefully still have 4.5 weeks to go.  I certainly don't want baby girl to come early.  My body is just starting to struggle.

    4. Any issues with your numbers, meds, or food intake? I get lows sometimes and the occasional high, but overall my endo is very pleased.  My A1C has stayed consistently very good so I'm pleased.  The lows are the things that scare me the most.  I've had a handful in the 40s and even 30s and those feel absolutely awful.

GTKY: Do you plan to incorporate some of your GD diet food or eating schedule into your life after you have the baby and you're no longer GD?  Well, since I have type 2 I always incorporate most of these eating habits.  I tend to focus on protein and go light on carbs.  I just have a lot more leeway and am able to safely eat some sweets and stuff that I am avoiding while pregnant.

So, saw the perinatologist yesterday and did a growth scan. In 4 weeks LO has gained 2 lbs and has gone from 68th to 80th percentile. Dr. is estimating close to 9lbs at due date. He said that it's still considered normal and at this stage there is no need to schedule induction or c-section. Once we get closer, if size continues to increase, they'll see if things need to change. He did say though that he generally recommends a c-section as opposed to induction if baby is going to be 9lbs or bigger. And generally no earlier than due date, but won't let me go past.

He said my numbers still look good and that I'm doing an excellent job. He doesn't think LO is on the bigger side due to GD. So thinking he probably would've been big regardless.

ETA: LO is also still breech but no reason for concern at this point since he's still moving ALL around in there.
  • And... We just talked early induction. If baby doesn't make an appearance by 39 weeks, they're going in after him/her. Bye bye Christmas due date. At least I know I can buy "my first Christmas" stuff now. Not looking forward to induction. Hopefully baby decides 38w6.5d is its time to shine

  • Thanks.  I have been so booked with meetings, etc.. that sometimes I can't wait two hours to take my blood.

  • I am 35 weeks along now!

No new appointment news. Just my regular visit coming up next week and an ultrasound. I've had my first issue with numbers the past two days after breakfast. Realty high at 1 hour, but below 120 after two hours. I havent been strict on the diet at all, And all my numbers have been well under range, so not sure about the spike this week. All my numbers for the remainder of my day are below 120 and fasting is normally 76-82. So maybe just need to watch the carbs at breakfast?!

I don't plan on following the diet after, I normally watch what I eat and I feel like this diet is making me crazy!
  • Had my second NST yesterday. It didn't go well. I was hooked up for an hour and this stinker just wouldn't cooperate. Add in other stresses and the last 20 mins and they started seeing BH. I almost got sent to L&D for more monitoring but between my youngest having a complete meltdown and me bawling my OB took pity on me. She walked me over to get an u/s done to make sure all was ok (he was absolutely perfect) and gave me strict orders to go straight to L&D if BH didn't go away or if anything felt off.

Next NST is on Tuesday. I am hoping and praying it goes better.

  • @kdm06c Aww...creepy Internet hugs. I hope next week goes better. I get the frustration at the baby not cooperating. DD1 never cooperated and I was on the machine over an hour every week with her. Once I had to come back two days later because I had been on the machine too long. Hopefully you can get your LO to perk up next week and get out of there soon. :)

  • @bluebird00‌ I'm sorry that you got that news, but FX that everything is ok.

I had my appointment with my new OB today, and we set an induction date of November 26, the day before Thanksgiving. With me being type II she wants to err on the side of 38 weeks (especially with me being AMA). My main concern with a 38w1d induction was lung development, but she said they're finding that the lungs of babies born to type II moms tend to mature sooner than normal or GD moms. So, she said it shouldn't be a concern.

This means I'll have a baby in 2 1/2 weeks and can eat actual desserts for TG! :)
