GD check-in 10/13

I'm gonna start this today because I just did my second 1-hr glucose test and came up with 161.  Which I knew would happen.  Ugh. So now I wait for the 3-hour.  Super duper.  I really don't want to be compliant with a diet plan.  Boo.  I know, I know.  I should feel lucky that I've made it to 30 weeks without having to worry about it.  But, it's Monday, and I am cranky, and I just went apple picking, and I want to make (and eat) so many pies.  Boo, I say.  Boo.

I've had GD for a while (since like 20 weeks) and totally feel you.  When we went apple picking we made crisps and cobbler instead of pie.  And I ate it with whipping cream instead of ice cream.  Both limit the carbs without totally cutting out treats.  I know it's not as fun, but maybe it's something that would work for you too.

@Cryssteen @a+m=dixon - good luck on the 3hrs!  You just have to go in with the mindset of what will be will be, and grab a chocolate shake on your way home before they have a chance to get you your result  ;):D

I would like to vent on this yucky rainy Monday about how I have given up trying to figure out what spikes my numbers and what does not, and my AM fasting numbers can basically go F-themselves.

Yesterday was my baby shower, and I went in with a numbers be damned, i'm going to enjoy myself attitude.  And I did - after doing a bit of damage on the sweets table, I take my 2hr reading and come up with only a 131!  For what I ate, I was really expecting to be super-duper high.  The 131 was a pleasant surprise.  Then later that evening, DH and I ate a late dinner, took my reading at only 1hr rather than 2 and was down to a 102!  Took my glyburide with a little snack right after that, went to bed, and then woke up with a fasting of 106.  I give up!!

Everytime I think I'm being super careful my numbers end up being higher than the meals when I don't really pay that much attention/eat what I want.

Maybe my numbers spike because i'm not eating enough carbs and my body is releasing stored sugar?  Who knows.  Its aggravating, and i'm kinda done.

ETA: due to lack of grocery shopping on my & DHs part today, my only option for breakfast was a PB&J - which I have had for lunch in the past with no issue.  2hr reading was 165  X(

GD can go suck it! (can anyone tell i'm overtired and super crabby today?)
  • brennabe97 - or, I'll just make and eat them before anyone tells me not to... Challenge accepted.

  • I'll add myself to today's check-in.

Found out today that I failed the three-hour GTT.  I am officially marked with the GD diagnosis.  I have no plan yet since I've had no medical appointments; I've just been told that I'll have to go "low carb" and meet with a nutritionist.

Really not looking forward to the restriction associated with GD but I'm sure I'll get through it, along with all of you!

  • What is everyone eating for breakfast?  Breakfast sandwich with only half the muffin is getting old.

And I am not allowed to have milk as per my nutritionist
  • I'm having one piece of toast with butter, one egg and one egg white with a little cheese on it. Also, over the weekend i replaced the toast with a Van's organic whole wheat waffle. It was a nice change, although not as yummy with no syrup. What is your breakfast sandwich? I've seen some people reference an apple crisp for GD diet. Does anyone have that recipe??
  • Is anyone else feeling a little weak and tired on this diet? I am sure my body is just adjusting to the fewer calories and sugar, but I just haven't had the energy Ive had the past few weeks. I really just want some spaghetti and meatballs or a bagel.
  • @paigep8 I am with you on the spaghetti and meatballs or a bagel.

I didn't start to feel like crap and fall apart until I started this stupid GD diet.  I had zero problems until now.  Now I am hungry all the time, moody, cry for no reason, etc.

Is it the GD diet or is it just the 3rd trimester?
  • I don't know, but I'm going to talk to my dr about it on Wednesday. I feel okay right after I eat a meal or snack, but then an hour or so later I am just tired and weak feeling...today I even felt a little lightheaded. I am 5'11" with a normal BMI and they have me on 2,000 calories a day and I'm taking walks. I think I need more food. How long have you been on it @pchung‌ ? Have you lost weight? Has your blood pressure gone down? I want to see how much weight I've lost in the past week.
  • I'm two weeks into watching my diet/monitoring my levels, so far so good.  They said if I continue to have stable numbers after this week I can cut back to testing 2x a day.

I did however lose 2-3 pounds over the last 2 weeks, and now for the first time my belly size is on the 'small' side of normal range :(    I'm definitely eating less, but never feeling hungry.

At my 30 week u/s baby was measuring in normal range,  but now I can't help but be a little worried that the baby is still progressing on track.   Would diet affect that? And could it that quickly?    I'm  getting another u/s at 35 weeks, it's so hard to wait to make sure everything is ok.

  • @MD12314‌ what are some of your meal and snack choices that keep you satisfied?
  • I would love the breakfast sandwich and apple crisp recipes?

Hi ladies - wanted to share a quick breakfast recipe that has gotten me through the past few weeks.

I used 10 large eggs instead of the measly 3 it calls for, and used light cream cheese. Next time I would half the cream cheese and add more shredded cheese because the shredded cheese is a protein, where as cream cheese is just a fat. Also added some fresh garlic and turkey bacon for more protein. Any bfast meat of your choice would be tasty, or you can leave out. Anyway, they were super tasty and I really didn't even feel like I was depriving myself. I made these pre-pregnancy (pre GD), and was pleasantly surprised when I saw that they were well within the carb limit. Easy to pop in the microwave in the morning. I could have one of these, and a waffle with PB (for a total of around 30 carbs) and my numbers were great after 1 and 2 hours.

BdblZ - so frustrating about the wonky numbers. I had a few instances where I went a little chocolate happy, and even though my 1 and 2 hour reads were good, my later ones weren't. I asked my nutritionist about it, and she said that it's because desserts that have a lot of fat in it (butter, chocolate, cream, etc) can spike much later since they don't break down like simple sugars do and store in your body for longer. Pizza is another that does the same thing for me. It can cause numbers to be high even up to 8-10 hours after eating. I thought I'd share my experience, but of course everyone is different.

To all in this thread, I really really empathize with every single one of you. Some days I'm still super cranky about this diagnosis, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's bright one. We have the baby, AND ridding our lives of this &*#*## diet! I'm totally stopping by the Krispy Kreme drive thru on the way home from the hospital!

  • I thought I stop by and check-in since it's official with the GD diagnosis with me. I found out last Thursday that I failed the three-hour glucose test officially from my obgyn office. I knew earlier on Tuesday when I got the results online just waited for the call... The obgyn nurse called and told me she was faxing my paperwork over to the Diabetes Institute at the hospital. They called me the same day and now I have a 4 hour class on Friday that I'm taking from 9:00 am till 1:00 pm. So I have no idea where to start until the class really but I did buy more healthy foods and trying to understand the whole carbs thing. It just so hard when I go to work and people bringing in sweets everyday and I can't have them now :(

It just been a stressful month since my mom just found out she needs a hip replacement too the same week I found out about my GD diagnosis. She goes on October 29. She is my support person for my class since DH needs to work since I've been losing hours since I wasn't feeling good and I guess it was due to this.

Sorry for my ranting just such a kick in the face of going on this diet when it's my favorite time of the year with food offerings I can't indulge in now!

  • @bayareagirl2011 Thanks for sharing your recipe.  I am going to the store after work today so I can make them.
  • Checking in even though I haven't been bumping in quite a while. Been tracking levels for a week now. I too am starving and cranky/moody. Thankfully my nutritionist does not necessarily care how many calories I consume, as long as I stay within the given carb range for the day. So my go to has been cheese and eggs to snack on.

There also seems to be no rhyme or reason with my morning number. High one day, low two days, then high again. Sigh. They told me to make sure my snack is high in carbs before bed, but that doesn't really seem to affect it, nor does taking a late night walk/not taking a walk. All my other numbers are within normal range. It's just that pesky morning number. From what I understand that really doesn't have much to do with what we eat, but really just how the hormones are affecting our bodies and the only real way to keep it down is with insulin. I hope that won't turn out to be necessary. :(

On the flip side baby measured in normal size range last week. Fingers crossed he remains in that range.
  • @lionloo32 Did you dr give you a time frame on when you will have to be put on insulin?

After 1 week the NP already warned me that when I go back this week if I am still showing numbers higher than 90 for fasting I have to be put on insulin.

I've been sticking to things like cheese/wheat thins, air-popped popcorn, cottage cheese, peanut butter or nuts  nothing too excitings.

@lionyloo32 Are you sure insulin is your only option?  My fasting numbers are high too, but they put me on oral meds first.  But i guess each office/doctor is different in their protocol.  Still worth asking though - especially if the rest of your numbers have been OK.  Popping a pill at night seems way easier and less stressful than trying to dose out insulin.

Where have @erien & @bowlwoman been this week - I feel like they are our GD Den mothers with all their wise words and experience... :)

@BdblZ Whoa there is a pill?  That's a option?  I am totally going to ask if the NP tells me I have to go on insulin for my fasting numbers.
  • BdblZ It was a very long visit last week and maybe I only heard the worse case? I have to send my log in tomorrow and she's going to call me to discuss what I can do differently. @pchung from what I understood, she said two weeks of monitoring and if my fasting number wasn't consistently in the range we would need meds. And from what I remember meds = insulin. I'm definitely going to ask tomorrow.
  • @pchung Yup! - i'm on glyburide - Its one of the pills that are pretty common for Type II diabetics.
  • @lionyloo32 yep tomorrow is my 2 weeks too.
  • So I joined the ranks today and I have my fun-filled class on Thursday morning. I'm off carbs until then. I'm worried because I am super squeamish about blood. Super nervous about how I'm going to handle pricking myself for times a damn day.

  • @pchung @lionyloo32 - It could just be every office/doctor is different.  I think using oral meds first before jumping to insulin might be a newer school of thought too, while insulin is just the old stand-by.

Eithhr way, its worth asking.  Although its not like glyburide is a miracle pill though.  It brought my fasting numbers down from over 100, but i've only been able to drop below the ideal 90 2 times.  So they may be increasing the dose next week.  We shall see....  :)
  • @bdblZ I am sure I am acting like a big baby.  My fasting numbers are below 100 but above 90.  I just feel like I am so close.

My biggest fear is being diabetic after pregnancy.
  • My biggest fear is the having it after pregnancy too, @pchung.
Do you guys ever have a high number, retest and it is way lower?  Mine was high after a lunch (salad) out so I wasn't sure what it was going to be.  It went from 152 to 110 to 118 to 132.  HUH???
  • Hey everyone, glad to see all the faces. I took the day off yesterday because the girls were off school, and I did a LOT of sleeping. I didn't even check TB until today. Glad to see I was missed. :D

I still need to read through and catch up, and I'll post the questions for this week if anyone is interested. If not, I'll just wait until next week when I start the new thread.

  • Figured I would jump on here, I just got my call today that I failed my 3 hour. I had GD with my first so I'm not really surprised, but that was 9 years ago so I don't really remember all the specifics.  I am 29 weeks tomorrow, just picked up my glucose meter and am waiting for the call for the appointment at the diabetes center.
  • Have to AW a bit. The hardest part of the GD diet has been limiting pasta and bread, I swear I was Italian in another life.

Tonight I made pasta with meat sauce for everyone and instead of pretending be content with the lousy portion of noodles, I cut up eggplant, baked it, melted mozzarella cheese on it, and put the meat sauce on top. Seriously so so good. Didn't even miss the noodles. Woohoo!

I also replaced pizza dough with eggplant the other night. Yum!

  • @bowlwoman I was wondering about you but it was reassuring to see you had posted on other threads.  Other than being concerned about PTL or something like that, I was also worried you had missed the drama:)

Not much to report here.  Just another week of pregnancy down (they are flying by!).  I have been absolutely terrible about remembering to test this past week.  I know this a critical time to be monitoring levels because hormone surges can wreak havoc on numbers.  I was traveling last week and my husband is traveling this week.  I'm in survival mode and tending to my DS seems to take everything I have these days...LO might be taking a little, too:)

  • Hey all.  I'm sorry I forgot to check in yesterday.  I have nothing particularly great to share this week.  Just chugging along.  I am getting heartily sick of the constant monitoring and the 4 shots a day and the restrictions on what I eat.  I literally can't wait until I don't have to be so hyper vigilant.  I can hardly believe I've made it 31 weeks with this nonsense already.  Still, I don't want baby to come early so I know I just have to suck it up for a little while more.  Must remember that we're in the home stretch.

And all my numbers were super low today. My after breakfast number was 54. FIFTY FRIGGIN' FOUR! I had very much the same breakfast I've had before with numbers in the 90s, so I have no idea what that was.

So yeah, sometimes you get weirdly high numbers, sometimes weirdly low. Gotta love GD.

  • I know you all did this weeks ago, but this effing 3-hour GTT blows.  I just had my 1 hour blood draw.  I feel so nauseous from that drink.  The taste wasn't so bad, but the sugar has given me a headache and I am dreaming of a glass of ice water.  Add that to the acid reflux and blehhh..  I'm 30 weeks already, so I know this is all kinda late.  But, I really wish I could just be left alone to eat ice cream and cookies for the next 2 months.  <--- pity party over here.

How do you guys monitor your sugar?  Is it finger sticks or weekly (or whatever) with your MD?

I know it's not going to FULLY help with anything, but I was intentionally going low-carb (why oh why!) a while ago.   Try Zoodles... basically get yourself a veggie spiral cutter, and make "noodles" from zucchini.  image

it's not the same, and I won't pretend it is.. But it does help to trick you.  And it's pretty good with pesto. Also, for pizza (and I am a pro at making real pizza), I like this cauliflower recipe.  Again, not exactly the same, but it doesn't hurt to be covered in cheese and sauce.

Finger pricks four times a day: fasting when I wake up, then two hours after each main meal.

Because I'm on meds I start weekly nonstress tests and biophysical profiles this week. My MFM office starts then at 32 weeks for more high-risk patients.

  • @bowlwoman - cool.  I'd actually prefer that over going in to see the MD so frequently.. especially added to my OB appts every 2 weeks.. soon, 1x per week.   I'll just count my blessings for now and cross my fingers.

  • BdblZ! So one more week of testing 4x a day and adding in the combination of protein/carb snack and walk and then we'll decide. I'm kind of in the mind set of go ahead and give me a pill to take so I can stop worrying about the stupid fasting number!
