Diapers and???

STM+ and anyone else that is more organized and knowledgeable than me....

so I know that we need diapers and wipes, but what other diapering items - creams, powder, etc - do I need to get? It occurred to me today that I have no clue.

We are using disposable diapers if that makes a difference.

Thanks ladies!

Desitin, beaudroux's or triple paste for rashes

A and D to prevent rashes once they are sleeping longer stretches (so you don't have to change diaper)

Maybe some clotrimazole for yeast rashes

I don't think baby powder is recommended anymore.

  • I've heard great things about aquaphor as well and also heard powder is a no no these days. Learning as I go too!
  • The cream suggestions are very helpful. Thanks. I think the overwhelming volume of choice in the cream/ointment area is the most perplexing part for me. Some insight is helpful to narrow it down.

And, as always the snark filled suggestion to use the search function with the assumption that it has just been ignored is a real treat. Thanks for that.

  • I am sure there are a zillion "baby essentials" lists if you google or look on Pinterest. But if you are looking for personal favs, I can certainly give you mine:

Diaper cream (use only when there is a rash)

Diaper area wash (California Baby brand or Mustela, this is good for messy poop clean up when you don't have the time to give them a full bath)

Disposable diaper changing pads (good for diaper blow out changes and changes on the couch/on the bed/in the car)

Wipes (make sure they are alcohol free so they don't dry out baby's skin and don't irritate diaper rash)

Some sort of caddy/basket/container to keep it all in

I don't use powder. I have never felt a need for it and it is not recommended anymore (small chance baby will inhale it and it will cause lung irritation).
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • P.S. Beaudroux's butt paste is the bestest. Also creamy Destin. You can't smell that stuff from a mile away like the other stuff. Just keep up with it and you should be good. Powder is more of a necessity if you're having a girl. Just my two cents.

I respectfully disagree. Beaudreauxs butt paste made my son's rashes worse. We found balmex to be the best for him.

  • I still use baby powder on my kids, because I love the smell. Its really easy to find talc free powders, the ones I use are mostly corn starch (Which, if they have a diaper rash is a no-no. It feeds yeast)

I use Burts Bees powder, and Redmond Clay Baby powder for rashy times (Its just powdered red clay)

They still sell it because it's amazing for de-sanding kids feet and legs post-beach andplusalso for summertime pregnancy chub rub.

    You just taught me something!

I totally forgot about chub rub. I used to powder under my boobs in the summertime to keep them smelling all lady like and sweat free.

  • We rarely had rashes but I had on hand coconut oil, Grovia Magic Stick and CJs BUTTer (used this for general cuts and scrapes too). This time I'm buying stuff from the Earth Mama Angel Baby line after so many great reviews. I've never used baby powder.

  • Am I the only one who uses Vaseline ( petroleum jelly) at each change?
Also, hand sanitizer is great to have if you can't wash your hands right away after the change.
  • Diapers wipes and butt cream. You're going to have to find what cream works best for your kid. I only use cream when there's irritation, and I use Bum Bum Balm (CD safe). Hate the thick zinc creams- seemed to make it worse. Vaseline is great in the beginning to keep meconium from sticking and if you circ.

  • FYI.... Baby powder takes sand off of your hands and face when it's time to have a snack at the beach or leave!!! It works better then water to take the sand off and it also works for the sand filled baby butt crack :D
  • Aquaphor is really good, however when the babies are so brand new I like to use just plain olive oil. It's all natural and moisturizing - it doesn't take away from the babies natural oils. Stay away from powders as they are not good for their respritory system.
  • Different creams work for different kiddos. You'll find what works best.
This. I picked up a couple different diaper rash creams. Also picked up one bottle of powder. Also a small container of Vaseline.

  • I have a quick question - I was talking to a STM the other day and she doesn't use wipes unless there's a poopy diaper.  It seemed strange to me, but do any of you guys do something similar?

    I did not know this!

As far the OP, all I used regularly were diapers, wipes, and diaper rash cream.  I liked Boudreaux a lot (especially the extra strength), Desitin and Vaseline in a pinch.  I'm sure it probably just depends on your baby's skin though, so you may just have to try out a few options.  DS was pretty lucky and didn't have many rashes unless he was sick.  We also made sure to give him plenty of naked time to let it all air out.

I always used a wipe or washcloth to wipe down his parts whether it was pee or poop.

FTM, but I've been watching lots of newborn care 101 videos (bc I have no idea what I'm doing) and many of the nurses in the videos recommend using a wet wash cloth for the first month or so since the babies skin is so sensitive. I'll probably give it a go and see how it works.

I put baby powder on the roots of my hair when I wake up late. It's not perfect but in a pinch it makes you not look all greasy. Like those days when you realize a sloppy bun won't even cover the fact that you've skipped quite a few days of washing it.

This. And @MissChristineMarie‌ when you get older, it just looks like you've got more gray roots growing in. I have no shame. :D Or, mix cocoa powder in with it to make it darker. You smell like chocolate, but that's not a bad thing, IMO.

Also, my girls don't fare well with creams and ointments with a petroleum base (mineral oil, Vaseline, petroleum jelly, etc.) It always causes a reaction that made things worse. So, I used Burts Bees or California Baby because they are made with only vegetable oil/essential oil bases. Just something to keep in mind. I also used Lanisoh on their diaper area for waterproofing purposes because Vaseline was out. Works like a charm.

For some reason I can't edit on my work computer!

I just re-read your post and I have never heard of not using a wipe or cloth when changing a diaper. Even if it is just pee, the area needs to be wiped down IMO.

This is what I thought too!!! Otherwise I would think that not only would it be itchy, but probably cause rashes.  I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a weirdo FTM lol.

Psst: all those fancy "dry shampoos" out there that cost a fortune are basically just talc, AKA powder. Save yourself tons of money by using the baby powder instead! :D My husband's mind was BLOWN when I showed him how well it worked.
I keep a box of cornstarch in the downstairs bathroom for quick touch-ups before I leave the house. I got a big ass container of baby powder at my shower, which I promptly absconded and put in my bathroom for my hair. No way I'm using that on the baby, but I'll dump it on my head if I need to!

That is for bathing. We're talking diaper changes. Unless you bathe your baby after every diaper change... If so, not a good idea. Dries out their skin.

Derp. I haven't had coffee or a shower yet. I missed the "diapering" part. And no, I'm waaaay to lazy for that. I barely bathe my toddlers every other day. Erm...I mean, its so their skin doesn't dry out! ;)

  • Aquaphor = Amazing for pretty much everything (even mom and dad)

Agree with pp's - baby powder is for your hair

Rash cream and diapers - you'll figure this out through trial and error.  Each baby is different, so you might go through a couple of brands before you find the perfect fit.

We bought a smaller bag of size 1 to get started, and then a box of size 1 and size 2.  They are categorized by pounds, which I have found to generally be close.  Depending on how fast your kiddo grows, or how big the poos are, you could move up sooner.  I got the brand that the hospital uses and that we used with our first LO (Pampers Snugglers), but there is a chance this one could be allergic, they won't fit right, etc. so I got the smaller bag first as a trial.  If they don't work, I'll return the boxes and try a different brand.

Thanks! That's helpful! I had been buying the smaller package, in a few different brands in size 1 to see what we like best. Then I just got 2 of the big cases of pampers at my shower. So I will just save those and and return them if she outgrows before then or is allergic.

I guess I'm in the minority here but we don't use wipes for non-poopy diaper changes. The nurses at the hospital and a few other online resources I've seen (I'm on mobile or I would link) said it's not necessary, and I've never had a problem with it. I do let him air dry a few minutes if the area is wet though.
