Maternity Jackets - Fellow cold-climaters, what are you doing?

So, who is buying or has bought a maternity jacket/coat? Where and how much???

I am trying to decide between buying a cheap maternity jacket big enough to layer, buying a slightly nicer maternity jacket, buying a regular jacket 2-3 sizes up, or just trying to use one of my husbands bigger jackets.
Any ratings, reviews, recommendations???

Re: Maternity Jackets - Fellow cold-climaters, what are you doing?

  • I will be using a pre-pregnancy coat that can be worn open or closed. It is a cozy blankety coat. I don't plan on going any distances outside for too long though. I would say a bigger coat would be better rather than spending the money on a maternity coat that you may never use again. I have been pregnant in the winter twice but refused to buy a maternity coat.

  • I live in MD and pre-pregnancy I didn't usually break out my winter coat until the end of December or beginning of January.  By then, I'll be on winter break and sitting at home waiting to give birth.  So I'm not even bothering with the maternity coat thing.

  • I was pregnant with DD on the same timeline as this LO (her EDD was 1/5, born 12/20). Honestly, by the time it got cold enough to need a coat, I was always so hot that I just wore one of my normal coats open.

  • I just bought a used one for $50. I'll probably only be using it for a few months so didn't want to spend too much money. But it does get cold here and there's no point in suffering at the bus stop, so I definitely needed something.
  • I got very lucky, a girl from work gave me a peacoat from motherhood maternity. It's amazing but I never would of paid full price for one ever.

I recommend trying to find one at a yard sale or something. There's usually in mint condition because as people said they're worn for such a short time.

  • I'm probably too cheap to buy a whole new coat. Will probably just use my current one and hold it closed.
  • Thanks everyone! I guess I will try and find something secondhand....
I am already wearing my winter jacket, I can zip it up but it squeezes my bump and I will have to leave it open soon. It gets COLD and windy here so I am not even sure a peacoat style will be warm enough. Although I am sure I will be a hermit in December, so maybe it doesn't matter that much?

The absolute cheapest one I have found so far is from Walmart ($26!!), I am considering that one although it probably won't be very warm, so maybe not worth it anyways. Although it would zip up at least :P

I didn't need one for my son because I delivered in October. Because we aren't sure if we will try for another baby, I didn't want to spend money on this item. Luckily, I have a friend who lent me her maternity pea coat.

ETA the pea coat will do for walking in andnojt of buildings, and maybe a short time watching our son play outside. I don't plan on doing winter activities in it.
  • I had a maternity coat from motherhood, but sold it at a rummage when we thought we were done having kids. I'm lucky now though that I've lost enough weight from morning sickness and now not gaining anything due to the GD (I'm still 18lbs down from my pre pregnancy weight, but I'm also still a fluffy mama), that my regular coat from last year will fit me just fine. I second the second hand suggestion though, I had bought the motherhood coat on sale.
  • I bought a motherhood maternity winter coat last January while pregnant. It was already on sale, and it's really comfy.

  • I didn't get a maternity coat last time (due in Dec) and I won't get one this time either. I will just wear my coat open. Thankfully it sounds like they aren't predicting a bitterly cold winter like last year.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • I can't bring myself to buy a coat I'm going to wear for a month. I've been wearing a zip up hoodie thus far. I'm probably just going to layer with that or try to make it by with my normal winter coat.

This is me to a tee. I really don't want to buy a new coat, so I am going to try and layer with my regular coat unbuttoned. We will see how long that lasts though.

  • I have a fleece lined wool coat monstrosity that my SIL bought me a few years ago. It's super warm and like XXXL, so it will zip nicely if I need it. Last time I was due in May and just barely made it through the winter in my normal coat and wore it unzipped when it started getting to snug.

  • I was tossing this idea around the other day, but I can't justify it. I've got a trench length puffy north face, so I'll prob just use that, leave it open and layer with a hoodie and a scarf if it's super cold. I don't plan on doing anything outside other than walking to and from my car and the hospital, running into a store, etc.
  • I was thinking of layering. I'll wear oversized sweaters, maybe layer that with a scarf and wear a regular coat opened. I'm in Chicago and I'm due 1/28. I do take the train to work, but I'll also wear an under shirt and thick socks and that will have to do. I haven't really been into buying maternity clothes.
  • When I was pregnant with DS, one of the only gifts I asked for was an M-coat. https://themcoat.com
They are stupid expensive, but living in Canada, down jackets are very necessary. The best part is the reversible triangle part. Maternity style when I was pregnant, then the next winter I was able to strap DS in the baby bjorn under the jacket reverse triangle style for walks in the winter. I used it all last winter without the triangle as a normal coat. This year, back to maternity style!
  • I borrowed maternity coats from my friends. I'm one of the last of my friends to have kids so I've been very lucky and have borrowed all of their maternity clothes. I have a light coat, a grey pea coat and a poofy black coat. It's insane. I don't even own that many non-maternity coats.

I will say that the black poofy one is ugly and I'm hoping not to have to wear it. But it's good to have in case.
  • @Jellybean707‌ - you could sew a small snap on the bottom (or a pay a seamstress like $5 to do it if you aren't good with a needle and thread) to keep it closed!

  • Sweet mile long link, sorry!
  • I bought that longer puffy coat from old navy and I love it! It's worth it because I live in MN and it gets cold long before January 30 when I'm due! I bought it for $55 shipping included. Not bad!

There's a pretty nice puffy coat at old navy that I like. I have a feeling that even not pregnant I will still like it on me. It doesn't look amazing online, but its longer in front/back which is a cute and practical detail. Its also incredibly soft and warm. On sale for $55. Not exactly super cheap, but not bad! https://m.oldnavy.gap.com/product.html?dn=op978282002&dv=1&kwid=1&referrer=http://www.oldnavy.com/commonDomainFrame.do?targetURL=%2Fbrowse%2Fproduct.do%3Fpid%3D978282002%26vid%3D1%26locale%3Den_US%26kwid%3D1%26sem%3Dfalse%26sdReferer%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.oldnavy.com%252Fproducts%252Fnew-maternity-clothes.jsp&sem=true&locale=en_US&sdReferer=http://www.oldnavy.com/products/new-maternity-clothes.jsp&pid=978282002&sem=false&vid=1
Looks nice, thanks! I might be willing to fork over $55....
@mora0018 is it actually warm, and would you need a lot of layers in really cold weather?

  • The link is just to their page, but not the coat. Is is maternity or regular? Unless I find a good deal on something I was just planning on layering.
  • I'm in Wisconsin and have been so warm so far that I haven't used a jacket yet (normally I'm freezing). When it does start getting colder I'll just wear what I have but leave it open.

  • I'm just layering a sweatshirt/sweaters with my normal winter coat, and when it comes time that I can't zip it, I'll wear a long scarf to at least cover my front.

  • I plan on stealing/borrowing one of my DH's coats as I won't be spending much time outside during the winter, just to and from the car into work/grocery stores/home.
  • My mom wanted to buy me something, so I asked for a coat ha! We found one at ASOS that was around 100 bucks - not the BEST quality, but great for a few months, and it's black with toggles so easy to dress up/down. Other than that, I bought a maternity puffer vest from Old Navy that is my other go-to for running errands, etc, when I'm in and out of the warm car. Hoping between the two I can get by!
  • I think I have a fleece jacket from last year that i can get away with for the winter.  It's not super warm but I pretty much go from the house to the car to the office and maybe into the supermarket - so I think I should be ok.  I only close my coat about 25% of the time as it is because I find it uncomfortable to drive that way.  Of course I don't really think Boston gets super cold until January - February so I'm not too concerned.

  • I live in Ontario. I just checked the long-term forecast and temps will be dipping below 0 at night (thats in the 20s for you Americans!)  ;;)
I am thinking that I will need to bite the bullet and buy that Old Navy jacket... but I am still trying to convince myself that I won't NEED it....

Crap, when I click on it, it takes me to the coat. Yes there are only like 2 black puffu maternity coats. Long and a regular one. I think the regular one was plenty long, even for me to grow in to. I think I just talked myself in to buying it :)
  • Where I live we normally start getting snow this time of year (weather prediction is that it will start this Saturday, actually), and my job has me outside A LOT, so I need a good, warm coat. I splurged on a maternity coat from H&M for $70. Not super cheap, but necessary I think and I'm loving the quality/warmth. Just hoping that if/when I get preggo again after this one it will be in the winter so I can save and reuse it.

I was going back on forth on buying by one but finally gave in. It seemsuch better quality than the one at motherhood. Not to mention it was much cheaper!

@nfm12832 Let us know how it is! :)
Did you just use the 25% off coupon, or do you have something better?

  • I had 25% coupon also had 10$ reward I actually already have it. It seems super comfy and warm. I tried on a bunch of coats, but couldn't get myself to pay $90 + on a coat. Also it seems like I will be able to wear after pregnancy. I say if you are looking for a maternity coat this is the greatest deal for the quality.
  • I got a coat that was two sizes up on clearance somewhere. I would have purchased a maternity coat if it had been a good deal but it doesn't get super cold here so I'm not too worried. Plus it is still so warm out right now it's hard to be thinking about cold winter coat needs.

  • I got lucky going to garage sales this summer and found a Gap down coat for $20! Can't beat second hand. Even if you aren't in to garage sales you can size up at a second hand store or craigslist. After all the things I've already had to purchase for myself I couldn't imagine buying a brand new winter coat to wear for a couple months.
