  • @keelyd Ask the LC to be sure, but my inclination would be to time from the start of a feeding. So when you bring baby to the breast, not from the start of supplementing.

  • Baby nursed but poorly. I keep trying to wake him up but then he just gets pissed and wont eat because he's mad. I'm just letting him sleep and after I eat dinner it's on: operation wake up and eat, damn it.

Don't worry and stress out too much, but do attempt to feed DS every 2 hours tonight (sorry) since he isn't getting good feedings in yet. Lots and lots of skin to skin. And get him latched first, THEN make him mad to keep him awake and nursing. ;) Good luck tonight!!!

I'm using an app to track feedings and it has an estimate on when the next feeding will be. 4 hours. Lol that's cute.

What's the app? Would you recommend it? I suck at paying attention to feedings sometimes, didn't think to look for an app for that
Similac Baby Journal. It works for me. I'm only using it to track feedings but it tracks baby's sleep and diaper changes. You can email the graphs and info too.

So got him awake and alert, he will latch, suck maybe 2-3x and then spit it out. Tried both of my breasts and different positions, doesn't seem to make a difference. He has had a bowel movement and two wet diapers today, so I shouldn't be worried too badly, right? :-S

Nope, you shouldn't be worried - especially if you're getting decent diapers. My LO was totally uninterested in food or being awake for the first two days, and the nurses and LC said to offer it but not to stress. She still rebounded and was back to her birth weight in just over a week.

  • @starla487‌ I made padsicles a few at a time. They were great and yes they still function as pads.

Baby nursing (pink app icon I think by American baby) is great. You can set it to show time elapsed, set alarms, etc!

Nope! Don't worry, just keep trying. When he unlatches, if he's not fussing, tickle his lips and latch him again. If he's fussy, put him back on your chest for skin to skin and wait until he's calm and happy to try to nurse again.

Give it a good try (20-30 mins) every 2 hours. Like PP said I'd say, he'll come around. It's so new to him! Keep up the good work! ((Hugs))

  • @pnwlover12‌ It may just be the learning curve and after several feedings things improve, but if DS continues having trouble maintaining a good latch, it might be worth seeing an IBCLC (there might even be one in your pedi's office) to have him evaluated for lip/tongue-tie and to get some tips on positioning.

Laid-back breastfeeding might also help him maintain the latch. I posted the links for instructions, etc., about a million times in the BF thread. ;) Or you can ask an LC or LLL Leader for help getting it right.

  • Oh! @pnwlover12‌ - Also make sure that you're cradling his head comfortably and not squeezing or something. Some babies really object to being held too tightly at the breast, so he might be unlatching because he's not 100% comfy (silly baby). And also make sure that his body is turned toward you and well supported. Sometimes babies will unlatch or refuse to latch at all if they feel like any part of them is dangling. Good luck!

  • @alfibet‌ I don't think it matters what you say or read. You can just read straight from the Bump Randoms page for all baby cares. Tell baby all about your internet friends!

I have done this more than once. Complete with explaining the backstory in a few cases.
