Help me feed my 1 yr old!

Hi there! I'm sort of an outsider so I hope I am okay posting a question here. DS was born oct 16 2013. I need help figuring out how to feed him. We started BLW when he was 6 mo. When he actually started to eat, around 9 mo, he got much more picky. It bums me out because I'm a bit of a foodie and have never been a picky eater myself. I get annoyed around picky eaters and want to do what I can to ensure has the opportunity to eat a lot of different foods.

Right now he eats bread, cheese, carrots, squash, and most fruits. Sometimes avocados. He usually won't try anything else. If there is anything else on his tray that is not one of the above, it usually gets tossed to the dog. He won't even sniff it. I patiently keep trying, but he ends up getting grilled cheese everyday to attempt to get him to eat anything. Sometimes he eats these things well. Sometimes he barely eats anything.

I have not attempted eggs or peanut butter yet. We have not yet switched to wcm because we haven't been to the pedi for his 12 mo check. He doesn't understand how to use a spoon or how to dip something.

We usually feed him a 6-7oz bottle of formula and then give him solids. So he ends up eating 24-28 oz of formula a day. Is that why he doesn't eat solids well, because he gets too much formula? Should we give him solids before his bottle? Should I start measuring his food? I'm just so confused and stressed.

  • We had to lock the cat away during baby feeding because she was tossing him food to get him to come over.

At first there were some foods she didn't like (yogurt, surprisingly), so we took foods she did like (mangoes, bananas) and mixed them with the yogurt. We did fruit-heavy at first then slowly decreased the amount of fruit, and she now will even eat plain yogurt very happily.  Not sure if you can try something similar with your LO.

What about adding pickles, tomato, and/or ham to the grilled cheese?

We also tried dipping bread in hummus and giving that to LO, but she didn't really like the hummus. But you could try putting small amounts of something else (hummus, pb, other spreads) on the bread also.

Did you say you feed him formula and then feed solids? That might be the problem. We feed meals separately from milk. So she gets milk when she does her last night wakeup ~6am, before her 2 naps at 10am and 3pm and before bed at 7pm. She gets her solids at 7am, 12pm, snack at 4pm, and dinner at 6. So they're staggered so her belly's never full of milk when we're trying to feed solids.

  • I agree- at a year, I would be offering solids before the formula. And maybe not as much formula? As far as the picky eating, that's pretty normal. Just keep offering and don't rush to give a preferred food if the first offered gets tossed- just keep offering.

  • It sometimes takes our DD a long time to get started eating at the table. But if she sees us eating and I offer off my plate too so she understands we are all eating the same thing.
Eggs with cheese and spinach are huge hit at my house. We just keep offering new things. If it were me I would not give a bottle then solids, his belly is full. You need to create a routine of times that you eat meals, and include LO.
I made the mistake once of giving my daughter food that was different than what we were eating. She ended up eating most of my chilli. I am big about sharing too, if I'm eating something DD always comes over to see what I have.
  • I've started just making myself a big plate of food and LO and I just share that plate. She eats much better if we eat the same thing. The big hit this week was lentils with onions carrots and kale with yogurt on top. I made a big bowl of it and she ate more of it than I did.

  • Agree with everyone else. We do a morning bottle and a night bottle, and then he just gets meals with water. Two 'snack' small sippys of milk mid morning and mid afternoon. I also just feed him whatever I'm eating off of my plate. And I mean I literally feed him, I don't give it to him to feed himself. Unless he's VERY hungry, he will play with the food/throw it on the floor, and I ain't down with that.

  • D has become pickier in the last few weeks, but if the food comes off my plate she generally more willing to try it. As of late she has denied eating cheesy mash potatoes a lil tikes meal and the sweet potato and pasta version. She also refused to eat ravioli. She does love yogurt and this fruit salad we made for her b-day so I made more so she keeps getting her fruits.

  • My DD has been getting picky as well. I have just started giving small pieces of fruit and veggies with some kind of pasta. If she doesn't take to it right away I keep trying. Right now organic unsweetened apple sauce is our go to. I give her wcm with meals but not a lot. I still bf so we switch between the two. Good luck
  • Thanks all for your suggestions. I will feel much better once we have our pedi appt and I get some things straightened out. Right now this is what our typical day looks like:
    745 wake, bottle, make breakfast
    10 nap

    1130 wake, bottle, make lunch
    230 nap

    4 wake bottle
    530 dinner

    7:30 bottle

He won't drink formula from a sippy. What does your day look like? When do you do snacks? Do I get rid of a bottle. Today he hasn't drank very well, but he hasn't eaten very well either.
