So let's talk TOT

It's that time of year again. Trick or treat is supposed to be a night of fun for children.

I don't care if a child has a costume or not. Maybe the child wouldn't or couldn't wear one for various reasons. Who the fuck cares? A costumeless child walking around enjoying the atmosphere and candy doesn't need a side eye.

Some children have medical conditions or are just plain shy. Unless they say, "Haha, fuck you. I got your candy, bitch!" don't judge them or their parents for not saying TOT or thank you.

A parent dressing up a baby to show off around the neighborhood is not horrific. Who doesn't like babies in costumes? At my house, I give the babies goldfish and safe-t pops and then give their parents the full size candy bar.

Why is there an age limit on TOTing? I could think of dozens of worse activities a 13 year old could be doing at night other than dressing up with friends and being silly while munching on some candy. They grow up so fast. Let them act like children and have the damn candy.
edit: And when kids are in a costume in the dark, how can anyone accurately tell how old they are? Some children are tall or look old for their age.

I think everyone should TOT. Halloween is supposed to be fun, not an opportunity to side eye and judge families.

I really needed to get that out.

So what's everyone passing out this year? I'm doing full size candy bars and chocolate zombie parts with a bloody center.

  • We give out peanut and egg free chocolate (Mars, kit Kat, coffee crisp, etc) and Maynard's assorted candies (fuzzy peaches, sour patch kids, cherry blasters, Swedish berries), which are safe for milk allergies.
I make sure to have nut free, but I didn't think about eggs. I do have kit kats though so I should be covered. Thanks for mentioning egg free.

You really do. Who else is going to eat sushi and pocky with me during my asian horror movie night?
  • We don't really get many kids in our neighborhood so we go to SIL's house to pass out candy and ToT on their street. They all have fun with it. I don't understand the judgers. It's just a few pieces of candy. The kids have fun. What exactly is the problem?
Who knows? If someone is going to judge so much, just turn out the light and don't participate. My grandma's neighbor complains about the babies. She oohs and ahhs over them while passing out candy, but bitches to my grandma afterwards. I don't get it.

  • What is your family costume @gotgingy? I think you mentioned it before, but I forgot.

You have an Asian horror movie night??? Well shit, now I have to move too.

  • I totally agree. And please people, don't bitch to me about the peanut allergy kids. They have it hard enough. Keep the Reese's for yourself if it's so much trouble. Win win.
Last year when I went TOT with Reese (peanut and egg allergy); we carried two baskets. She carried one and I carried one. All her unsafe but very delicious candy went into mine (m&m's, peanut butter cups, snickers, kit-kats, york peppermint patties) but she got to carry her less than thrilling stash (starburst, skittles, lollipops, etc) This way it was already pre-checked and if she somehow opened one I didn't worry about her eating it.
This is a good idea. I think I'll have to do this.
It worked out really well. I didn't have to worry about her opening unsafe candy, or it opening by accident (i.e. another kid etc) and getting all over her basket. Due to her allergies, I already knew most of the brands of candies that were out, and any questionable ones went into my basket.

Tomie, the Korean Cinderella movie, and A Tale of Two Sisters are some of my favorites. It happens either Holloween night or the night before.

We are doing the teal pumpkin project and will have a bowl with candy (milk, egg, and peanut free in our house) and a bowl with glow bracelets and mini slinkies. My folks are coming, and I'm stealing @fancynewbeesly‌'s two pumpkin idea!
If we would be home and had time to get pumpkins and teal paint AND get non food items, we would do that as well. But the way the week is going, DH will be picking up candy for TOT, so I don't think we will be participating in the teal project this year. Next year definitely!

  • I love my neighborhood for Halloween. People get excited about decorating, plus there is a house that is an actual castle on our street (weird, I know; it's on old house that was built to look like a legit castle), so it's always spooky. There's tons of TOTers and activity, and it's so fun to sit on the porch with beer and give out candy.

  • If you're going to judge, send them to me.

We didn't get any trick or treaters last year.

  • I agree. I love Halloween so much. I took DD1 out when she was 6 months old in my mom's neighborhood. And I carved her a pumpkin that said "DD1's 1st Halloween". I got a few comments of "does she really eat the candy?" . No. I do. I dressed her up and took her out. I gets the candy. And I'm sure those 5 houses I went to really ran short that year. In the upscale rural neighborhood they live in that gets about 15 kids max. a year. I can't wait to bring out both DD'S this year!
  • I just came here to say I feel like @KlondikeBar is and should be the authority on this issue.
Well this just made my night @jesuisfatiguee.

Why? That sounds a little hatery.

  • It's not really been my experience to have more than like, one kid who didn't say thank you. Even the teenagers are polite here, for the most part.

    Same

  • Oh we've moved on to fighting about manners I see.
This is the same fight every year. It's a ritual.
Yep. I figured we might as well get it out of the way. It was going to happen eventually.
