If you have ever had the true Influeza virus, the respiratory issues to the point of feeling like you can not breath, fever of 102-103, body aches, you feel like death for four days barely able to get off of the couch/bed to go pee, you would get the vaccine.
It was the AWEFUL. Could not imagine that being pregnant. Since I got it, it has been flu shot every year.
+100000000 I've never felt so horrible in my entire life.
I got it 2 weeks ago. I don't normally get it and I actually had a bad topical reaction to the shot. Its up to you what you do. I'm hoping that everything is ok. They do say if you were to have any type of bad reaction, then it is supposed to happen within a 24-72 hours.
Got mine Friday, not only did my OBGYN strongly recommend it, but in order to work in a hospital it is mandatory to have the flu shot or you have to wear a mask to work.
Also the flu shot is a dead virus so if you got sick once you got it, its because you were already sick
I never get the flu shot. I typically have bad reactions to vaccinations. I don't usually get the flu and I take vitamin and herbal supplements to help stay healthy through cold and flu season. It's true that you don't know if the current years vaccination will be super helpful against whatever strain of the flu ends up attacking people. When I'm making decisions for myself, I decide against the flu shot.
But.
I AM NOT ONLY MAKING DECISIONS FOR MYSELF RIGHT NOW. I am also making decisions for my son, who is gestating away inside my body.
If I can do ANYTHING to protect him better, I will damn well do it. This means giving myself a "mere" 66% advantage against the flu. This means lowering my chances of getting so sick I need hospitalization. This means lowering my risk of getting a fever that may cause my son brain damage. This means passing on passive immunity to my son who will be born during flu season.
Do I expect to get the flu this year? Not really. Would I have gotten the flu shot if I weren't pregnant? No. Will I keep taking vitamin D and echinacea? Hell yes, those things are also great and effective. Did I get the flu shot as an added measure of protection for this sweet life my body is working so hard to manufacture? You bet I did.
I personally do not get it. As i am allergic to it. I work in the health care field and just mask up. I havent received the flu. And sure people die from the flu, but people die from other illnesses too. For instance...the few years i did receive a flu vaccination, i got very ill multiple times...it weakens the immune system. I had tonsilitis which nearly killed me...fever of 104.5 that wouldnt break. Many people know the higher the fever the more liquid your brain is losing. Anyways, its a personal choice. People are going to throw opinions and criticize anyways. i also am not a fan of all the ingredients in a flu vaccination. Thats just me. And for the people who say science is correct and blah blah....science is constantly changing as well. If i do remember...the flu shot was never a big deal until swine flu came around. Im sure the same will happen with ebola.
And guys you can die from other illnesses too so why prevent the ones you can prevent I mean like DUH!!!1!1!!1 oh wait that doesn't make sense does it lolwut

You work in ....healthcare?
--end quote--
I can always tell who the "certified from a 6 month program" health workers are vs doctors or nurses because they always brag about being in healthcare but then spout off a bunch of false shit that makes it obvious how little they know.
The one year I didn't get the shot I got influenza so bad that I was down for over a week and missed all of Christmas festivities. I say, always say yes!!!
Interesting article with some interesting comments. May not help you make a decision but it is interesting to hear what some people have to say. I, myself, am not getting one.

Yeah that looks like a real reliable source you've got there.

Did you read the actual BMJ article? I am a chemist and I read scientific papers for a living. The author injects opinions into a lot of the data (BTW BMJ posted a correction of some of the data stated in this paper). This is not a real stand alone clinical or scientific study. Dr. Doshi is criticizing policy statements and socio-economic effects not the science behind vaccines. There is a great response already posted on BMJ own website by another scientist -
Dr. Doshi refers to US influenza vaccine strategy as “a policy without an objective”, citing 2012 CDC recommendations2 that “do not even mention the effect the policy aims to achieve”. In fact, the citation is entitled “ Prevention and control of influenza with vaccines”, which seems to summarize neatly the aims of this and all vaccine programs, i.e. to reduce the incidence, transmission, and adverse consequences of vaccine-preventable infections.
To support the premise that influenza is being mongered and sold as a more severe disease than it is, the author criticizes the CDC statement that “Flu seasons are unpredictable and can be severe”, referencing his data (Figure 1) showing “ a far less volatile and more reassuring picture” and noting that “deaths from influenza declined sharply over the middle of the 20th century…. before the great expansion of vaccine campaigns ”. This statement is intended to cast doubt on influenza severity and vaccine efficacy. A more reasonable interpretation of the data is that influenza deaths declined sharply because of improved ventilator technology for respiratory failure (driven by pre-vaccine polio epidemics), antibiotics to treat secondary pneumonia (from the 1930s onward as noted4), and even – perhaps – improved influenza vaccines.
Antibiotics and ventilators can prevent many influenza-associated deaths, but I for one am also grateful for vaccines that reduce my risk of contracting this miserable disease by an average of 60% 5, before getting to the ventilator/antibiotic point. I’m even happier if annual vaccination reduces the risk of my transmitting influenza to fragile patients or family members.

Well. I for one would much rather be on a ventilator and antibiotics for my secondary bacterial pneumonia infection rather than getting a simple shot where I had a chance of not getting sick in the first place.
You're a chemist? Do you see the logic fail in his argument? C'mon. I'm a biological chemist and have more sense than this.
I get that fear mongering and money making make this country go round. I really do. But this rebuttal to the flu shot doesn't do it for me. Want to talk about how the word "chemical" has been raked over the coals and that the "organic" and "natural" movement is full of four hundred more logic flaws than the flu shot? I'd enjoy that more.
Umm I am confused...I was pointing out the logic fail in using the Doshi article by posting the rebuttal. I am new so not the greatest at using quotes. But I hear you on the fact that anything "organic" is always given a free pass. Chemicals are in everything people (only difference is that in organics a lot of plant chemicals/ compounds are not completely known....so nutraceuticals actually have more chemicals than OTC drugs!). Anyway I am a little tired of reading that big pharma and doctors doing everything only for money. Sure they lobby and are for profit but they cannot just lie about what their drugs/vaccines do. Its heavily regulated and more so now than in the past....ok whatever...I am done with this topic....peace out.
For example, a lot of you posted that the cdc recommends this and that aboutbthe flu shot, but remember when the stone flu vaccine caused a huge jump in fetal death rates, then the cdc vastly under reported that in the results released to the public? If it happened then, who knows what is going on now. We are, after all, dealing with a vaccine that changes yearly. Not nearly enough time to see long term results on us or babies, but the cdc says it's okay, so it's not questioned.
What is the stone flu vaccine? I've never heard of it.
Do you have a link to a reputable source about it?
@Joy2611, have you read The Great Influenza? It's one of my favorites. And you. You are my favorite.
I have not! I should.
At the very end of my time as a research technician (one step below doctoral student), I had to do a Journal Club presentation. Blah. I picked a paper about the structure of the 1918 influenza coat protein (HA or the H in the flu names, like H1N1). They had found eskimos preserved in the permafrost who had died from influenza. The researchers extracted the influenza DNA, identified the gene for the HA, asked bacteria to make the HA, purified the HA, crystallized the HA and then reported the structure of the HA. I was fascinated.
When I went to graduate school and studied crystallography, I presented that paper again in one of my classes because I loved it so much. After that, I read everything I could find in 1918 influenza. I should read that book, too.
Hello. I love you. Check out some of Ian Wilson's really cool crystallography work at Scripps. Really amazing crystal structures along with antibodies. It makes me squee.

Hi I am new to this message board and thought I would help out with my knowledge. That is, if all of the hot headed critics here don't mind. I feel as though the key question was never fully addressed. If you all would refer back to the top of page one and stop giving opinions on who is right or distastefully wrong we could end this debate all together.
The forum started with a simple matter of opinion. What has not been answer by either side is why? A simple just because, as is plainly seen across this whole forum is not enough. People throw around statistics with minimal backing.
When the trust in public information and media outlets is at an all time low, as well as, the faith in the truth and validity in what our government tells us is in constant question, the only information here that would be considered valid by either side is alternative media outlets.
If your going to argue for a matter of opinion you should shut up. A battle of who has the bigger ovaries is dumb and childish. Show real data from real scientific studies as well as the link to their sites so that we may all make an informative decision for ourselves.
So here is your first real document read it for yourself!
If vaccines are so great and wonderful then there shouldn't need to be a compensation tax on every vaccine. Here is my source
Yeah your first source leads to nothing and I don't take anything seriously that doesn't end in .org, .gov, or .edu so I'm not even clicking on the second one. Super valid scientific points you make there ::eye roll::
No one here is arguing just to argue and seeing as no one knows who the fuck you are, telling everyone to shut up should go over swimmingly for you. Maybe you want to rewind about 70 years and watch your child live inside an iron lung with polio, or die from something else totally preventable. I, for one, do not. And EVEN IF (I will entertain this hypothetically for .05 seconds) vaccines caused autism, autism doesn't cause death. The diseases they prevent? They cause death. Idk about you but I prefer my children alive.
Every other medication in this country lists all of the side effects and I don't understand why so many of you people are hung up on the idea that for this ONE MEDICAL PRACTICE the government is trying to hide something from us. You want to be "all natural"? Cancer is natural. Bacteria is natural. Viruses are natural. Things that make you sick are natural, things that can kill you can be natural. A simple infection would kill you before modern medicine came about. All of these scientific advancements you people fight so hard, until you actually need it. Then you'll be singing a different tune.
Okay here I'll share some links. Here's a link to the amount of measles and rubella cases in our country; 1 in 1,000,000
Compare that to this article about the amount of cases in Europe, where many people are reluctant to vaccinate their child. It's from 2011 but there were 28,000 cases!! (I'm mobile if someone can get an updated version go for it) This is what you get when you don't vaccinate.
@somerandomchick If the majority of viruses won't kill you and @janda426 wants her kid alive, not dead, then in the case of not knowing what the true side effects are of the vaccines being released, as showed in the particular study with a previous flu vaccine, then I think I would take my chance with protecting naturally.
But the flu does kill people, especially pregnant people & babies. It's hard to know exactly how many people die of the flu or complications caused by the flu, but estimates are in the 10s of thousands per year. There are minor risks to the vaccines, but the risks from the flu are greater by all evidence that we have. Your risk of getting the flu and then having a serious complication are greater than your risk of getting a serious complication from the vaccine.
You can say that you're healthy and yes it's usually the high-risk groups that have serious complications--but if you're pregnant, you are now a high-risk person, and after you have your baby there's a high-risk little person living with you. Even if you don't come in regular contact with the pregnant, very old or very young, you never know when you'll come in contact with somebody who is immunocompromised. Herd immunity is very important. The vaccine is not 100% protection which is why it's even MORE important to get the vaccine even if you're not high-risk, because you could give the flu even to a vaccinated person who is. (They are less likely to contract it, being vaccinated, and less likely to get seriously ill if they do contract it, but still)
If you were just deiciding for yourself, and lived in some magical bubble where you never came in contact with another person ever, then whatever, do what you want. It's your right to put your life at risk, just like you have the right to consume toxic amounts of alcohol. But I'm sure you come in contact with other human beings at least once a year, and you should consider that you're putting THEM at risk too. Like reckless driving, you're not only risking your own life.
I told my OB that I am not sure I want to get the flu shot. She didn't try to force it. She even said that getting a flue shot does not mean that you don't get the flu anyways. Also, as far as I understand they yet don't know exactly what the flu going to be like so it is hard to say how effective the shot you get now going to be. My OB just said that if I feel sick I should get into the hospital asap.
I work from home and so don't meet a lot of people.
This. I caught the flu when I was 23 and in the best shape of my life. IT. WAS. HORRIBLE. Every joint hurt. I would be hot and then so cold Id shake. My body felt like it had been beaten with a bag full of quarters. I was vomiting till there was nothing left in my stomach then I'd vomit some more. I was coughing. My throat was sore. When the vomiting stopped the fatigue set in. It was like I was a toy with an old battery. I had to pee and it legit, LEGIT, took me over two hours to gather the strength to get up to go to the bathroom to pee. IM BEING 100% SERIOUS. When I was done I literally let myself flop onto the floor. The cold tiles felt really good on my skin. I fell asleep on the floor. An hour later I was back in bed and I stayed in that same position until my husband came home from work. I ate zero meals and drank zero fluids while he was gone. He was horrified at the state I was in.
I cannot imagine going through that while pregnant. Get the shot.
I have never in my life had the flu and imagine that it would be miserable, from all the stories I have heard. Never the less I believe that this particular shot is unnecessary. It doesn't 100% protect you from getting it. If I am going to put a concoction of chemicals in my body I want to truly benefit from it. Like measles/mumps/rubella or polio. I will always vaccinate for things like that. It would be a disaster if hardcore viruses like those made a come back and people weren't vaccinating for it. The flu has been around and will always be around. However, the mortality of the flu, when compared to other illnesses, like meningitis, is leaps and bounds better. The World Health Organization put it like this
"In industrialized countries most deaths associated with influenza occur among people age 65 or older. Epidemics can result in high levels of worker/school absenteeism and productivity losses. Clinics and hospitals can be overwhelmed during peak illness periods.
The precise effects of seasonal influenza epidemics in developing countries are not known, but research estimates indicate that a large percent of child deaths associated with influenza occur in developing countries every year."
So industrialized countries...America. Ages 65+. Developing countries...Not America, see more child deaths.
Let me continue. The Who went on to say this
"Antiviral drugs are available for treatment, however influenza viruses can develop resistance to the drugs.
So now, you who take this vaccine are at greater risk of causing this virus to build an immunity to the vaccine. Thus, creating a greater, stronger, potentially more deadly virus. This country is constantly over vaccinating creating extremely deadly super viruses such as, CRE and MRSA. These superbugs are born in hospitals and clinics and are extremely deadly. CRE has a 50% mortality rate. As apposed to the flu's 5-10% in adults and 20-30% in elderly 65 and above. As reported by WHO.
No sickness is fun. but the flu can cause.... The common cold has killed and caused other complications... Thanks to modern medicine it rarely does. However, "A mutated version of a common cold virus has caused 10 deaths in the last 18 months, U.S. health officials said this week." this was reported by FOX news in 2007. Google it...I just did. The common cold can also cause pneumonia and many other complications that have much much higher death rates.
Again I do not believe all vaccinations are bad. I just don't agree with getting the flu vaccine. As has been reported several times in this message board, the ability for those who make the vaccine to guess which strain to vaccinate for is a guess. If they get it wrong you just got a pointless vaccine. On top of that it doesn't keep you from getting the flu "it just makes it less severe". Being that I have never had the flu I don't know how I could trust someone who tends to lie about statistics and vaccinations in general, CDC.
Some people here act like those of us whom don't believe anything the CDC says are conspiracy theorists. Just compare what the CDC website say to other sources. Look at independent studies of the vaccine its effects. It is ignorant to say that you wont trust any site that's not a .gov or .org. Those kinds of people are called sheeple. Sheep people. Just running with the heard doing what ever big brother tells you.
That was rude of me to say. I only said it because people need to learn that the government isn't the only place to gather medical information. If need be I will provide a list of accounts where the Gov. has lied about; statistics, medical malpractice, a diseases potency, effects of vaccines.
We all must be well informed, calculate the risks, and make sound judgements. We are of our leaders of our children and, while they will be their own person when they grow up, they will mimic what they learned growing up. You listen and believe everything big brother tells you...your kids will do the same unless someone else convinces them otherwise.
If I wasn't pregnant and/or didn't have young children I probably wouldn't get the flu shot. But, like many here have said, it's not just about me anymore. We're a higher risk group and I just can't understand this "it's not 100% effective" shit. No vaccine is 100% effective. And how the hell is not trusting sites that don't end in .gov, .org, or .edu making someone a sheeple? Because they actually want reliable sources? Who.org, are they lying too??
Some people here act like those of us whom don't believe anything the CDC says are conspiracy theorists. Just compare what the CDC website say to other sources. Look at independent studies of the vaccine its effects. It is ignorant to say that you wont trust any site that's not a .gov or .org. Those kinds of people are called sheeple. Sheep people. Lmao so I'm a sheep because I don't trust websites that look like they were made by a 5th grader in 2003 with bold headlines written in comic sans font screaming at me that the government can't be trusted with ZERO sources to back it up.
Okay. After that I officially don't give a shit about anything else you wrote, and I haven't even touched your logic fail problem @bettybigtots

Oh, gee, I've never heard THAT one before. If you want any credibility, maybe you should ditch the tired old "sheeple" from your vocabulary.
Seriously. You've predicated much of your argument on your complete failure to understand the basic difference between vaccines and antivirals. You don't know what you're talking about. Anyone can access information, but as you've demonstrated, it takes at least a basic level of cognitive ability, if not the kind of education that most of us (including me) don't have, to make sense out of it.
DD born 10/10/07 * DS born 11/25/11 * #3 due 3/9/2015
Never the less I believe that this particular shot is unnecessary. It doesn't 100% protect you from getting it. If I am going to put a concoction of chemicals in my body I want to truly benefit from it. Your "logic" makes no sense. Do you apply this "logic" to other safety devices like car seats and seat belts?
I understand what you are saying. My "logic" says if polio is around then I will benefit from a polio vaccine. Polio has been studied for a much longer time than the flu. Therefore I will trust old research that has proven to be true than new research from the CDV that contradicts many other research sites.
So industrialized countries...America. Ages 65+. Developing countries...Not America, see more child deaths. Source?
The ability for those who make the vaccine to guess which strain to vaccinate for is a guess. If they get it wrong you just got a pointless vaccine. On top of that it doesn't keep you from getting the flu "it just makes it less severe". Being that I have never had the flu I don't know how I could trust someone who tends to lie about statistics and vaccinations in general, CDC. You know they don't decide what strains to cover by throwing darts at a dart board, right? They have information from doing studies in countries whose flue seasons start earlier than ours when deciding what strains to include.
Yes I am aware of that. However, you said it right. Other countries. What happens in other countries, in the world of diseases and viruses, is not necessarily what happens in America. You cannot determine what is going to happen in America by what happens in Europe, Sweden, Norway, Japan, Chana... So on and so on. As you said before about my previous statement. This "logic" makes no sense.
I only said it because people need to learn that the government isn't the only place to gather medical information. And how do you know these other "sources" are reliable?
When you have FOX, ABC, the CDC and other major sources telling you one thing and the media pushes that one thing, yet dozens of other articles and stories and independent media avenues are telling you something else, you must one verify the validity of each source by cross referencing them with other outlets. Then you must look for testimonies and things like lawsuits regarding that topic. Occasionally, you will find major new networks like FOX, ABC, and CNN report on something and then never cover it again. Or change their stance on that particular subject. After your research and cross referencing you must then decide for your self...Do i believe all the evidence that supports the independent medias or do I trust the gov, when it is well known that they have lied, tried to cover up, minimized as well as blown out of proportion different issues. I have quoted who.gov several times. This does not mean that I trust it. I do my research first and what I have found to be the general consensus amongst other researchers, quote from the source people are to most likely believe.
When you start off with Fox as a source, it all becomes moot to me.
@bettybigtots : CRE and MRSA are both bacterial infections...NOT viruses. Although your vaccines making super viruses theory is also crap...from a scientific perspective.
Apparently many of you do not listen to sound logic and reasoning as well as scientific data supported by many of our countries well know scientists. You sit there and poke and make fun of anyone who goes against what you believe. So here let me dumb this down. I have provided many sources of research backing everything I have stated here in this forum, while most of you just give your own opinion. Many of my sources are from have come from the CDC and WHO. Which, from what I understand is all you listen to. I have been civil and respect your own personal beliefs, but they are yours and not mine or my families. You say that I am wrong for what I believe. Well they are my beliefs I could sit here and tell you that you are wrong for your beliefs, but I am not. I am simply defending those you have run down.
If you choose to believe everything the gov. tells you than that is your decision. I personally would not recommend it, but hey its your life and this is a free country. I don't care that you choose to believe sources that have a history riddled with lies. I am simply providing evidence to support the fact that your source of information, the gov. could be wrong. I am not totally against vaccinating. I agree with those who say herd immunity is important. Polio, MMR, and others that have been around for years and have proven to be successful in almost completely eliminating the problem are worth getting. That is how herd immunity comes into play. That's when it's important. But the flu...no. Yes there are health implications on both sides of the spectrum.
"The flu itself may not kill but..." Yes the flu can kill, yes some of the other problems it may or may not cause can kill. The common cold can kill. It can bring about many other problems like pneumonia and other respiratory complications that can kill. All of which apply to the exact same group that the flu can cause problems with. Yet we don't go crazy about getting a cold.
I have done research on both sides of the fence with the flu. This is how I came to my decision. Does it hurt to get it no. Has getting caused numerous adverse health effects as well as fetal death. Yes. Has it actually protected anyone from not getting the flu. There is minimal evidence to support that it does. The evidence that is out there states that the reasons for flu vaccination success is highly contributed to the part of the population that gets the vaccine. Research suggests that those who tend to exercise, eat well, and take vitamins are the ones more likely to get the vaccine. So it would make sense then to say the vaccine works well when people already have strong immune systems from leading healthy lives.
Many people throw around the CDC quote that 24,00 - 36,000 people die every year from the flu, which by the way was the same statistic used they used from 2003 - 2009. For starters that number is completely inaccurate. Second off if you actually read in depth on THEIR own website you will find that the number is just an estimate. An estimate that is solely based on the number of people that die from respiratory and circulatory illnesses. Thus, they call those deaths flu or flu related deaths. Without doing an autopsy they cannot actually determine that influenza is to blame for any of those deaths.
Their lack in ability to produce accurate information that has been proven true is why I choose not to follow the "herd" on this particular vaccine. This is my opinion, criticize away, but I am not trying to change your mind or belittle your beliefs I am simply defending mine and others like me. If you want to debate this and try to change someones opinion on the matter provide more research to back what you say. I have quoted many different sources and have given links to most of them.
I have never in my life had the flu and imagine that it would be miserable, from all the stories I have heard. Never the less I believe that this particular shot is unnecessary.

You're right, it's not about you. It's about you + baby. If the CDC has conveniently covered up a huge increase in fetal deaths a few years ago, while promoting the vaccine to OB/Gyns, I would think, you would think of not you, but you're baby and the risk to it.
Re: Flu Shot and Pregnancy??
You bet I did.
i also am not a fan of all the ingredients in a flu vaccination. Thats just me. And for the people who say science is correct and blah blah....science is constantly changing as well. If i do remember...the flu shot was never a big deal until swine flu came around. Im sure the same will happen with ebola.
My brain hurts

I can always tell who the "certified from a 6 month program" health workers are vs doctors or nurses because they always brag about being in healthcare but then spout off a bunch of false shit that makes it obvious how little they know.
Yeah that looks like a real reliable source you've got there.
Do you have a link to a reputable source about it?
Here's a link to the amount of measles and rubella cases in our country; 1 in 1,000,000
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/24311021/
Compare that to this article about the amount of cases in Europe, where many people are reluctant to vaccinate their child. It's from 2011 but there were 28,000 cases!! (I'm mobile if someone can get an updated version go for it) This is what you get when you don't vaccinate.

Thank you. I can't keep trying lol

When you start off with Fox as a source, it all becomes moot to me.
THE BLACK HELICOPTERS ARE ON THEIR WAY! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!11!!

Ahem, did I do it right? I could totally be a 'source.'
