I guess I have another one that goes along with the pet thing. We have a mastiff. If she gets hurt, it's not like we can lift her. If she gets hurt to the point of needing help to go to the bathroom or incontinent, we will do what we can to a certain point. But it's a quality of life thing. I don't look at her like my kids, she's a dog.
I've spent more money on my lab in vet bills and emergency vet bills than my children combined, but it only goes to a certain point.
My ILs kept a chocolate lab alive for probably 4+ years longer than I would have. He had SEVERE hip displaysia, moaned in pain constantly, had tumors and growths and when some were removed, it never healed. They would not let go and it made me so sick we stopped going over there. By keeping that dog alive, they were being cruel. I will NEVER do that to my pets.

I think you more eloquently expressed what I meant to say, and it came off wrong when I said it. I would never let an animal suffer. I would pay money to keep an animal as pain-free as possible. I do spend money on my cat's wellbeing. I do care. But I do have different guidelines towards what I would do for my child versus what I would do for my cat. There is a limit. Aggressively treating a chronic illness (which cannot be cured only slowed) in an animal that is close to their expected life expectancy anyway is not only unrealistic for some families, it is also not always what is best for the animal.

---quote box fail--- We recently put our lab down. He had cancer and also needed an unrelated abdominal surgery. There was no guarantee that he would wake up from the surgery, or live more than a few weeks. So we chose to euthanize. It was very difficult because we could have pursued treatment of both the abdominal issue and the cancer, but at some point ending suffering is the most loving thing you can do for a pet.
@souptin Thank you for the puppy videos!! It made my day. DH wants puppy so bad (and so do I) but with the long shifts I work, and with us not being able to afford dog-walkers, it will sadly have to wait till one of us gets a promotion. So for now, I will satisfy my dog-loving side with puppy videos
Edited twice for spelling because I got so excited at the videos I forgot how to type, apparently.

I happen to be on the "curvy" non thigh gap side and I've always hated the fact that people stereotype women like that. I don't want a thigh gap but it's just NMS...I've always had curves and larger thighs, but on the other side..I know how offensive it feels to have all the "thick" girl comments, like more cushion for the pushin, and the fat mud flap girls...those kind of things have made me feel ashamed of my body type, is that how the skinny girls feel about comments?
I have had comments made to me about how I need to eat more and "beef up" so to speak. It is definitely hurtful. I do eat. Plenty. Ask my husband who has watched me eat an entire oven pizza by myself. I think there is potential for large amounts of hurt on both sides. :-(
Yes, thank you! My least favorite thing about my high school years were the body image issues that I struggled with. I was constantly bouncing back and forth between girls either making jokes about me being anorexic or complimenting me on how thin I was. And then there was the one time that my best guy friend (who I, coincidentally, had a huge crush on at the time) told me he was "disgusted by how thin I was." I'm mature enough now to know he was just a jerk but talk about making a teenage girl feel insecure.
I wish we (general "we" as a culture) could stop going back and forth between "skinny is beautiful" and "curvy is beautiful." Because everyone is beautiful. And someone will always get hurt when the culture switches back and forth between what's beautiful. And on top of that, everyone has different taste. Maybe some guys (aka jerk friend from high school) don't like thin women. But DH loves my body and my body type, and that's all that matters to me.
But I especially hate it when women shame each other. I don't care if you don't have a thigh gap and don't want one but it is not okay to make a comment about a body type or feature and say it's "gross."

No no no, in NO way am I saying that if a dog is suffering and there are no options for treatment or there is no guarantee that the treatment will work that you shouldn't do what's best for the dog. In any and all cases, I am on the side of what's best for the dog. Always. And maybe me being in rescue and seeing the things that I've seen does make me over-passionate about it, but it's hard to not be. But like I said, at the end of the day, the only thing that matters- feelings aside- is what is best for the pet and the pet's health.
people just need to understand that it is a spectrum. you shouldn't glorify being on either extreme end (skinny rocks, but love your body and make sure you eat enough, and curvy rocks, but make sure you aren't overweight to the point where heart disease, etc become a factor.)
@doxiemom415. Then maybe we are more in agreement than I originally thought.
It is not a reality for me financially to have extreme treatments done to my cat.
It is also very possibly not what's best for her, since she is symptom free now, to put her through blood draws and surgeries that probably wouldn't help her in the end would not be humane. If she was in pain, I would do something about it.
I guess I just get defensive when people act like I don't deserve to have a pet because I don't have this kind of money. The other option would be to have left her starving on the side of the road, or take her to the shelter where she would most likely have been euthanized before another family adopted her.

I think you may be right! I think sometime I DO get so passionate about it that people take it as I'm telling them they don't deserve to have a pet. When That's not what I mean. It just gets so hard when you do see so much bad to not jump to the immediate conclusion of "oh when things get hard theyll just dump their pet and move in to the next". But you're right, if she's symptom free, no need to put her through all kinds of testing! Now, let's hold hands and skip through rainbows..
Weight issue: can't always read a book by its cover. I'm the odd ball in my family, everyone is either tall and skinny or short and skinny...my dad was 6'7" my mom 5'2" I'm 5'7" and the "cubby one.
Pet issue: also can't judge a book by its cover, meaning to each their own, our pets are part of our family, they are like my fuzzy kids, I would go to the ends of the world to do what's best for them and I wish I could save every animal in this world, but I can't, I can only save the ones I have, not everyone feels this way but that's like any other topic. We rescued our little cat Oscar and I've nursed him back to health after he lost an eye recently(first aid nurse) when some wouldn't have... He was a drop off kitty and I couldn't have asked for a better pet.
Just kudos to all you ladies that love your pet and maybe someday we'll all love everyone's body lol

I don't like being told I need to love my body. I don't. There may be parts I like but as a whole I hate it. Yes it is my fault I am the size I am. I can lose weight. I've proven that I can. However, to devote so much time to eating healthy and exercise to lose a lb a week when you have 70 lbs to lose is frustrating. I am not a self motivating person. It's not me. I don't have help. I cannot devote so much time to the gym when my house is a disaster or things need to be done. I can't so that means I pay the price. I would go on meds in a heart beat to help lose weight but I have zero health issues. Which is wonderful. I just wish I didn't have to have a health issue to get help. My sister will be going for weight loss surgery in January. I'm jealous because I'm stuck trying to do it on my own( I know that surgery is not easy and it will be a hard road for her and I am happy that she is able to do this for herself). She had no health issues just a higher BMI. There is no way I can learn to love my body. It's sad that I've struggled my entire life with weight. I've gotten down to decent sizes 2x and never managed to keep it off. I constantly feel as if I'm being judged if I eat something that is unhealthy. I judge myself for it. I don't like my husband seeing me naked.

i think it's important to remember, that not everyone dumps dogs at the shelter because they no longer want to care for them. sometimes shit happens in life, and they are no longer able to care for them. sometimes dropping a dog off at a shelter IS the right thing to do when the alternative is that they starve, or go neglected because life happens and they are no longer able to care for them.
just saying, not all humans that drop animals off at the shelter are evil. sometimes they are making a really tough decision. and i know that's hard to see in your line of work. i have many friends in your line of work and they often have the same attitude.
I agree, and that goes back to the whole I'm always on the side of whatever is best for the pet. Always. But I can't help but feel like there's so many options to avoid taking a pet to a shelter where they're literally busting at the seams and there's about an 80% chance that that pet isn't going to make it back out of those shelter doors alive. I'm not naive and I understand that things do happen, and life changes, and there are certain instances where you're unable to give a pet the care it needs for whatever reason. I just wish, in my perfect little rainbow world, that instead of people dropping their dog off at a shelter that they would take the time to explore other options. Find a rescue, find a home for the pet yourself that you know personally will take care of your pet and give it the care it deserves. It would be so much easier to save them if they were brought to rescue directly, instead of us having to go and pull 10 and 15 at a time, once a week, JUST to keep them from being killed. Even though that leaves hundreds there to face that fate. We can't save them all, but we just need a little help.
@mbm1983 That is also true. I would never dump an animal for convenience's sake. But if we fell on extreme financial hard times and lost our home and/or were forced to choose between feeding our kid and feeding our cat, we would take the cat somewhere that they could have food and shelter. If we couldn't find a friend or family member to take them, yes that would mean the animal shelter, and yes it would be an extremely emotional and heart-wrenching decision, and the absolute last resort.

This sounds like an extreme, but it could be the reality for a lot of struggling families, especially after so many people lost their homes a few years back

@redneckmomma25 I just want to send you creepy internet hugs and tell you that you are not alone in how you feel. It's exactly how I feel.
Seriously it's like you read my mind. The onetime iI did feel ok with my body I was miserable bc I was doing exhausting workouts and barely eating, then I got pregnant and I'm not going to give up time with my DD or life to go back to being miserable just to have a smaller body...I wish I had time to devote but I don't.
Apparently a UO - I think it's cruel that people mention a thread that appears to have been deleted, say how great it was, and then refuse to answer people questions or even say what it was about.
Come on people, throw us a bone here.
Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!
Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this.
Ok seriously guys, WHAT HAPPENED ON THE SAHM THREAD???
My UOs for today-
1. I love my cat,but I am not spending thousands of dollars for her healthcare. I will pay for her preventative care, basic things like antibiotics and pain medicine to make her comfortable, and if she gets injured I'll get it fixed. But no, I'm not going to try and diagnose her heart murmur, which would involve an xray and bloodwork, and then possibly years of kitty beta-blockers and kitty surgery for kitty congestive heart failure. That's ridiculous. You can guilt trip me all you want, vet, but I am not spending thousands to treat a chronic condition in a happy, symptom-free cat, who has already made it to age 8 without issues.
Then you probably shouldn't have gotten a cat to begin with. I work in rescue, and DAILY we get in dogs that people have kept for the majority of their lives, but the second they have any kind of health problems, they dump them like yesterdays trash. It's sad and it's disgusting and it's selfish and it's ignorant. So now, we get a sick dog, that is having to deal with being sick as well as being away from it's family that it's spent the past 10 years with. You do the math of how well that goes over. When you get a pet, you sign up for the good and the bad for the duration of that pets life. If you can't handle the bad, than you don't deserve the good. You get a pet knowing that they're going to live for years, there could be health issues, they could have some underlying illness you don't know about, you know all of that. And if you don't, then you clearly have done no research and shouldn't be getting a pet to begin with. A pet is a lifetime commitment, not a "until life gets hard" commitment. And now I'll step down off of my rescue soapbox.
EDIT- bc spelling is hard.
I agree with you, and all of my animals are rescues, but I don't think what you said has anything to do with what she said. She is not talking about getting rid of a sick animal. She's not talking about abandoning the cat or making it suffer. From what she said, her cat lives a quality life. I also have a cat with a heart murmur who lives a normal life. I've discussed investigating it further with her vet, and he did not pressure me to take her to a specialist to find out exactly what is wrong and if she needs meds. Might it help her live longer? Possibly, but it is not effecting her quality of life, and I'm not dumping her because of it.
As pet health care options increase, people have to draw a line somewhere. People will have to do what they think is best for their families. Some vets are more understanding than others. I have many friends who are vets. You should hear them debate cosmetic braces (yes, teeth braces) for dogs. One thinks owners should do it, and most do not. Would you get your dogs braces? Everyone has a line.
Thanks for sharing your experience with your cat, glad to hear someone else has gone through the same thing but with a more understanding vet. Sounds like maybe I just need a new vet!
That being said, @doxiemom415 and I cleared up this misunderstanding (aka sounds like we all love our pets, and are all just doing the best we can for them) and are, like, totally friends now. Wanna skip with us??

From what I caught: the homosexuality and religion thread (I did not read it all) blew up. Then there was a mod vote. Then they (a couple posters) decided that an outspoken Christian would be a bad mod so there was a ton of drama. Then BUmpJackie decided SAHM didn't need another mod after the Christian didn't win the vote. Then there were lots of names called, lots of regulars banned, more regulars pissed that they didn't understand why people were getting banned and others weren't, then regulars started talking about going to an off board and getting banned/posts deleted for sharing the links to an off board, then a bunch of other mods came in and there was mod drama, then BJ came in saying basically mods can interpret the rules, then more uproar and more GBCB, then at some point some accused this of being a way to get rid of the Liberal women to change the atmosphere into a more traditional SAHM environment.
That's my best cliff notes from what I caught.
I don't really care about any of the drama, I was a lurker mostly because of the weird vibe I always got over there.
@MrsRexManing - Very well summarized. And then, after lurking on the non-bump boards, I found the DickGate drama being talked about. That's what I couldn't stop reading...
Wait... you mean to tell me, that there's something called DICKGATE.. and I'VE MISSED IT???
The fruit snacks thread was ridiculousssss. "I don't want to buy my son fruit snacks because (judge) but I don't want him to TELL his friend that I'm judging" "Just tell him no, and don't explain, then he can't word-vomit your explanation." "Then he'll be a mindless drone who accepts authority unquestioningly." "Boys who can't take no for an answer are terrifying--no means no, you don't always get an explanation"
It went back and forth about drones and kids being an asshole--I'm not a SAHM reg so I was surprised at how accepted it was to call each others kids assholes and little shuts, TBH. Also early on there was some random mocking if the OP because she likes boxes dehydrated mashed potatoes, which are also not healthy.
At some point in the arguing about being a drone, the one who got banned said to another poster that she had to teach her kid no means no of the teacher will hate him for interrupting the class constantly--but the child used as an example and doesn't speak. EXPLOSION. Then the person who had made that comment about the mute kid kept whining that the other, and another mom fighting for an autism diagnosis, always pull the 'special needs' card in arguments and it's such BS
It was a pretty ridiculous thread. But I don't think anyone got banned for that thread exactly.
My UO is about the sex vs. gender thing. I don't entirely get it. I mean, I get it in the sense that I understand sex is biological and gender is based on societal roles. However, my thing is that today I am scheduled at my OB for a "gender determination scan." If my Medical Doctor refers to it as such, why aren't people in a tizzy over correcting the Doctor's office? Also, I feel really odd saying I'm making a sex cake.
Plus Also, Celiacs unite! Gluten is a pain in the butt. (Do you see what I did there?)
Your OB actually has 'gender determination scans'? Generally OBs don't do a scan just for sex because it's not medically necessary, so you have to go to an elective ultrasound place if you want a US just for that. If your scan really is just for the sex I would check your insurance, shit like that probably isn't covered if its not medically necessary. (And if your OB does bill it as being necessary, then they/you are committing insurance fraud and that could come back to bite you majorly later)
My OB's office offers them as well - for $75.
During my first appointment, my OB asked, "Do you plan to find out the gender?"
I agree...I'm not sure it's necessary to get so up in arms about. Yes, I know there's a difference. However, I also acknowledge that the society we live in uses the words interchangeably so it doesn't bother me.

You guys keep saying "slow" but I think what you mean is at or slightly above speed limit.... Which means YOU are the ones breaking the law.
I was thinking specifically of a van I passed on the interstate going 55 in the left lane. The speed limit was 75. Slow enough that I passed them, stopped for a bathroom break and then passed them again.
Not only is that being an asshole, you could argue that it's more dangerous than the person driving 80.

It is more dangerous! There's more wrecks caused by slow drivers than fast...and by slow I do not mean the speed limit or slightly above.

I had to leave earlier, but I want to comment on the gluten thing now that no one cares! From the outside I'm sure it looked like I just went gluten free to lose weight. However, it was a last ditch attempt to improve my health so I would have more energy for myself and my family. It has made a huge difference in my daily life. Although I still have low energy it is no longer debilitating. If I eat any bites of gluten I get a migraine and terrible fatigue for 18 hrs. However, I can eat a little gluten dust and be okay. I'm sorry that that ticks people off. Also, my son had a bad rash that wouldn't go away no matter what we tried. He started crying one night because the itching was so bad. I did a gluten free trial with him and the rash is going away, not to mention he quit getting diaper rashes. So many people have invisible illnesses. Most of those illnesses have no cure. Desperate people will grasp at straws. Don't assume people are going gluten free because they are bored.

Slower traffic keeps right, left lane is for passing. It's simple, once your done passing slow folks, get your ass back over. Luckily, in Texas, they will pull you over for holding up traffic and causing hazardous driving conditions, especially in Houston and Dallas. There is also minimum speeds limits for the highways, most people don't even notice.
You need to educate yourself. I have celiac disease and it caused many, many more symptoms. By the way, rashes are a part of it. Just doing a simple google search will tell you.
ETA: I just hopped on and I'm sure this was covered. But as a Celiac, I'm pissed.
It took me nearly two hours to get to the end of this. What a great read! Let's build a treehouse with a crocodile moat and a rope ladder where A15 can hang out! We can have our fascinating discussions without fear of fruit-snack Armageddon. OPs allowed in if they know the password.
Re: UO Thursday.

We recently put our lab down.

And technically if we want a second year (unpaid of course) we can have that too!

This sounds like an extreme, but it could be the reality for a lot of struggling families, especially after so many people lost their homes a few years back

@Lildoll513-
Thanks for sharing your experience with your cat, glad to hear someone else has gone through the same thing but with a more understanding vet. Sounds like maybe I just need a new vet!
That being said, @doxiemom415 and I cleared up this misunderstanding (aka sounds like we all love our pets, and are all just doing the best we can for them) and are, like, totally friends now. Wanna skip with us??

That's my best cliff notes from what I caught.
I don't really care about any of the drama, I was a lurker mostly because of the weird vibe I always got over there.
ETA: I did not notice fruit snack drama lol
