Active pregnancy

I was wondering who is actively working out during this pregnancy and what sport/workouts do you do?

I crossfit, I just take it easy since I get out of breath easily.

Re: Active pregnancy

  • I run, cycle, and lift weights. I'm hoping to find a yoga class I like for the winter. My workouts have felt awesome (even better than usual) so far!

  • I like to mix things up, but lately I have been into workout DVDs when LO falls asleep at night.

  • I've been running between 20-25 miles a week most of the summer. I am cutting back a bit because I'm getting more fatigued than normal. I also do yoga a few times a week, so in the winter I will probably switch to elliptical at the gym/yoga classes. I definitely want to keep working out during my pregnancy though.

  • CrossFit. I love that the owner is 6 months pregnant. It's nice to see her there. I have noticed she scales the cardio, drinks water between rounds, but is RX with weights - though she used to compete so I'm sure she isn't pushing it. It is inspiring.

With my first pregnancy I did boot camp until third trimester when I was hospitalized for pre-term labor that was unrelated to my exercise but put an end to the exercising.
  • I try to walk a few miles a day, either outside or inside to my walking workout DVDs. I also run after and take care of a toddler! :)
  • Wow!  Lots of fit ladies in here!  I'm a fitness pro - train others, and teach cycling, water fitness, boot camp, and TRX.  I'm interested to see how long I will last with my classes!  Looking forward to hearing your fitness stories throughout pregnancy!

  • I CrossFit as well and love it. Some workouts have felt great and others I've had to stop for a few more breaths than normal and water. I have a couple friends who are pregnant and CFing at my box as well and it's been fun to see them grow and do the WODs. I'm really looking forward to seeing how I feel this time around lifting and working out vs last time when I didn't do much but prenatal yoga.

I run usually 5K 3-4 times per week, and plan to continue that.  We got a new puppy and she isn't really that keen on running the the full 5K, so I've slowed my pace a bit for her and don't always make it the full distance since she wants to walk again after about 3K. If I tried to go the full 5K I would be out for an hour an a half, which I don't have in the AM.

I also do aerial arts, typically I primarily do flying trapeze, but the safety belt is no bueno right now,(I would assume) but I'm still doing lyra (the hoop) and plan to pick up more silks (fabric) and static trapeze since I can't fly.  I'll stay doing that as long as they let me, I'm not sure what the rig's insurance will have to say about that.
  • I love Jillian Michaels workout DVDs- 30 day shred, Ripped in 30, etc. They are quick (you're done in 30 minutes or less) but INTENSE.  I'm taking more breaks now between circuits and modifying some of the more difficult moves.

  • I'm a bit of a mixed bag. I'm training for my first 5k, currently doing run/walk intervals due to shin splints though. :( DH and I also like to go for walks when the weather's nice, and I like to bike sometimes. I was doing a lot of yoga/pilates over the summer, and I really want to get back into that. I also do the occasional workout DVD, YouTube video, or On Demand video.

  • @McSarah1104‌ how cool! I've been a gymnast my entire life and arial arts always amazed me. A friend got me into some pole work and I was so impressed with how hard it was! I'm going to put that training on hold for a bit though...

  • I'm training for a half-marathon at the end of the month, and I do various things (mainly yoga and other bodyweight exercises, some light weights) as cross-training. I started using Lindsay Brin's Pregnancy 3-pack workout DVDs earlier this week. They feel a little lightweight for me, but I haven't been hit by the fatigue/nausea train yet.

We have quite a few gymnasts at the rig, and they always have a much shallower learning curve (so usually get really good in a quick amount of time!) pole is really similar, lots of the same moves and muscles. I tried pole a couple times too, but I only have room in my life for so many expensive hobbies :-)
  • I am a Zumba instructor. I did Zumba with my dd until 39 weeks. I have just recently started crossfit and plan on doing that throughout the pregnancy. However, I probably won't do as much in the first trimester due to fatigue.

So glad to see this support/motivation system in place already! I've had to cut out hot yoga and I'm already tired enough that I'm doing my cardio at home with a video rather than a class at the gym so I don't embarrass myself by being a little out of breath, haha, but other than that, I'm planning on keeping my exercise routine with a few modifications as long as I can: 2-3 days a week of yoga, 2 days a week of HIIT, and one day a week of either spin or swimming.

  • HIIT, Stepmill and heavy lifting. Dropping the weight a bit just because I'm so tired but I plan to stay very active all pregnancy! I did take all week off before I found out I was pregnant because I was SO tired all the time.
  • I'm just really happy that we're going to be staying active while pregnant. It can only help us with stress and the symptoms. And stay looking good while pregnant.

Crossfitters: i know that alot of people have their opinion about pregnancy and crossfit. But I've seen mothers do crossfit at my box and no problem. They scale and take it easy.

  • Unfortunately I've had to cut back on exercise due to my recent move (it's almost been 2 months) the altitude here is 7,500 ft as opposed to just 750ft back home. My first month here I was winded from only a couple of flights of stairs lol but I figure it's probably a good time to start & I'll be sure to take it slow. It's so good to see so many active mama's!!

  • I Crossfit also! I can already tell that my stamina isn't where it was two months ago. I plan on working out the entire pregnancy, scaling when I need to
  • I have done Bootcamp 3-5 days a week since DS was born 2 years ago, with only a week off here and there inbetween sessions! I plan on starting back light tomorow (took this last week off due to exhaustion and finding out I was 4 weeks along, wanted to make sure implantation happened safely) gonna try and hang on throughout entire pregnancy!
  • So I've been walking everday now I have a silly question but it's been worrying me.... It really quiet hot here in australia we are on the verge of summer....is it ok to get hot while pregnant? I was so lazy my last two pregnancies and I'm determined to stay healthier this time

  • @melanie_ariel we moved to the capital city of Ethiopia but only temporarily. We'll be moving back to the states just before baby arrives & it allows us to avoid the headache of dealing with the embassy & their stacks of paperwork. I guess we're killing 2 birds with 1 stone lol.

Im a gymnastics teacher so I am all the time active.  running, lifting kids, doing rolls, and flips.  I will probably only teach little kids once January comes (about 20 weeks) but until then Im going to keep on until my doctor tells me other wise.  I get very nervous but I was told as long as it was something you did before your pregnancy and your body was use to it you could continue to do it... and being active is good for the baby and pregnancy.

  • I lift and I plan to continue through this pregnancy.  I lifted through my last one and felt great.  I was even doing planks till I was 8 months pregnant!  The only reason I stopped was because baby was breech and I had this silly idea maybe my abs were too tight to allow baby to turn.  Well, he never turned, so this time I'm doing them the whole 9 months.

  • Hi all, I don't know if any of you are also hikers/backpackers, but since this is the "Active Pregnancy" thread, I thought I'd send an update!

We went camping last weekend to see the fall color. I had mild nausea and cramps and felt thirsty and tired the whole time, but was still able to:

    1) Sleep well and stay toasty. With a sleeping pad and a bag rated to 15F, I was more than cozy, and the night temperatures were in the 20s. My BBT was still nice and high each morning. (Getting out of my bag to pee more frequently during the night, however, was NOT fun!).

    2) Manage a good hike. I had to pause a couple of times to dry heave or catch my breath, but I actually think this is a perfect exercise for relieving mild m/s and cramping. I'm looking forward to continuing it on the weekends throughout the pregnancy. I also learned that you're not meant to hike, and especially sleep, over 11,000 feet while pregnant. So because the elevation was so high (we were sleeping at 8,000 feet), we just did two 5-mile hikes a day from 8,000-10,000 feet, rather than one big hike, which was more manageable given my fatigue anyway.

Hope this is of interest to some of you! I could definitely feel a dip in my abilities from the 10-day trek H and I did earlier this year to 15,000 feet, but rest assured that it's still a fun activity for now in "our condition."

  • You ladies may be able to help me then! DH and I just moved and the first thing we did was get a gym membership.  We went a few times before I found out I was pregnant.  Now I am a little worried to work out.  I know they say if you've been working out you have nothing to worry about, just don't push yourself.  For me though, I hadn't been working out for about 2 months, so I'm scared to jump back into lifting or running anything that may push me too hard and cause us to lose our first little baby.  I wanted to wait until I talked to the dr tomorrow at my prenatal appointment.

Do any of you know what would be safe for me?  We wanted to swim in the mornings and do weights a few times a week, along with some walks with our dogs.  Would I be okay with all of that, or should I skip the weights?  I may be over analyzing, but I just don't want to risk it!

  • Hey there.  I try to get 5 work outs in a week.  With my first pregnancy we had to do IVF so my dr was on the extra cautious side and only wanted me walking during the first tri but then I was able to go back to my normal routines after that.  We were blessed with getting prego on our own this time and we found out when I was 6 wks along.  So when I had my u/s at 6 1/2 wks my dr said to just keep doing what I'm doing but make sure to listen to my body.

shanaUW To those of you that are doing TRX do you change up your routines at all and not do certain moves?  Just wondering about some of the abdominal stuff.
Thanks and good luck to everyone
  • Looking forward to checking in with other active moms for motivation! I've been doing kickboxing (CKO for those in NJ/NY). It's just bag work, so no danger with sparring. Like some other ladies, I've noticed my endurance is down. One of the owners is about ready to pop and she still does the classes, but modifies them. It's definitely encouraging to know that I could potentially stick with it until the end.

Glad to see another horseback rider around here. I'm planning to ride as long as I can but take my speed down a little more each month since I barrel race. What is your discipline?

Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.
