How do you eat your steak while pregnant

This is prompted by my cooking steak the other night. I cooked it the way I always prefer it, medium-rare, and DH kept saying, "I just don't know if I'm comfortable with you eating it like that." And I pretty much said, "I'm not going to ruin my steak by overcooking it. It will be fine. Relax."

So I'm curious - how do you eat your steak now, and you can comment if you changed your ways while pregnant (like maybe you eat it well-done because you like it that way, or maybe you eat it that way while pregnant because of food safety concerns).

Re: How do you eat your steak while pregnant

  • I always eat my steak well done.  With steak sauce.  But I don't really like steak, honestly.  Growing up on a beef farm I was forced to eat steak all the time, I'd rather have chicken.

  • Ehhh, I haven't had any since I've gotten pregnant (at least, from what I remember). Which is prolly good, since I like it warm and bloody, between rare and medium-rare.  >~> I've watched far too many parasite documentaries to risk it while pregnant, though

Yeah, if you liked steak, you wouldn't eat it well done with steak sauce (jk...kind of). :)
I always freaking end up with "the curly steak" too.  blah

  • Medium rare, as usual. Haven't changed anything.

I don't usually eat it well done but my doctor told me that when you're pregnant that you are suppose to. I asked again because I have heard many people telling me that when they were pregnant it didn't matter how the steak was cooked. I am that person that will do it because everyone tells me I'll be fine and then I'll get the worst case and regret it lol. Anyone else told not to eat any meat even steak unless well done??
They'll always say that, because when you're pregnant, your immune system isn't as good as it normally is. Well done means any parasites, or food-born illnesses like salmonella and even ec-coli are killed during the cooking process. But it also means your meat'll taste like leather.

  • Medium rare, the only way to EVER eat it.
  • I usually eat it medium but I do medium well when pregnant for food safety reasons.

  • I usually eat steak medium, but can not stomach meat during this pregnancy.

  • Medium rare has always been how I eat steak. Nom nom! I've only had steak twice since getting pregnant though.
  • Normally, I eat steak medium or medium rare. Since I've been pregnant, the few times I've had steak I've had it well done. I couldn't find any information on whether or not we have to worry about undercooked steak, so I have erred on the side of caution. I miss eating steaks the good way though.

  • I picked Med Well in the poll, but normally we always have it Medium Rare. I do worry about the "risks" a bit, so now when we have steak, my DH cooks mine a little longer. I am not sure it makes it completely to Med Well or not, but it is overdone to me.

My problem is that with both pregnancies, I have a general aversion to almost all meats anyway. I usually LOVE steak, but when pregnant, it grosses me out. I only eat it still because DH loves it so much, and it is what he makes when it is his "turn" to cook. I usually eat about half my steak and then hand it over to DH to finish.

  • Growing up our steak was always rare. Now that we cook it on our own, I prefer medium rare, DH likes his rare. Since being pregnant, I've tried a well-done steak and burger and honestly couldn't chew the steak! So.....back to medium rare when we have it (not all that often).

HOWEVER.......at our fetal echocardiogram Friday, LO had extra fluid in one of his lateral ventricles in the brain. Normal size is 5-10mm and he has 10.5mm (his heart was perfect!). I know it doesn't sound like much, but enough for the Dr. come in (once again) and scare us to death. He ordered a blood test to test for viral infections from me which can be caused by my cat (I haven't touched the litterbox since May) or eating undercooked meat. I should find out this week the results.

I guess I should mention the other possibilities of extra fluid 1. Nothing 2. Chromosomal Abnormalities (took the fetal free cell DNA: negative, although I guess there's still a chance) 3. a blockage (will have to monitor at the next US) and 4. A viral infection from me.

    Sooooo.......No more steak for me because I can't stand a well-done or even medium-well.

After this LO comes out, I'm having a sushi and wine party all by myself.

  • I always have my steak medium raete, but I've ordered it medium during this pregnancy to feel a bit less guilty :-)

  • I eat my steak rare and can't stand it any other way. I've just not eaten steak while pregnant because it's too much of a risk for me to eat it how I like it. This coming from someone who still eats sushi and drinks wine.

  • I like it rare, since I'm pregnant I freeze the steak to kill off parasites, thaw before cooking and get a very good sear on the crust.

Well before pregnancy and now. I can't stand any pink in meat. I also prefer it to be cut for me. Thus the reason I hardly eat steak. :)

ETA: There is one restaurant that I am willing to eat that's just medium. I'd prefer well, but their meat just tastes so good and it almost dissolves as soon as you bite into it.
  • I don't get much steak here (any?) but beforehand- medium rare. Pregnant or not. Anything cooked more is icky to me.

  • With my first pregnancy I couldn't even look at steak, which was sooo sad because filet is always my go to at restaurants. This pregnancy it doesn't bother me but I still don't have the same craving for it as I did before my first pregnancy. Used to do medium rare, while pregnant I try medium if I have it...but it has to be pink still or I won't eat it.
  • Medium well always. I disagree that it doesn't taste good if it is cooked past medium.

  • Medium rare steaks but burgers are well done.  I was told that steaks are different because they aren't ground up and like PP said , the middle of the steak isn't exposed to the air and are much less likely to have parasites.
  • I eat it medium now - before I ate it medium rare. Every time I ask for it medium rare I feel like I'm doing a disservice to the poor steak!

During pregnancy, I will usually have it Medium although occasionally will go with Medium Rare.

When not pregnant, I get it Medium Rare or occasionally Rare.

  • Well done. If it's got any pink. ...I will not eat it.
I also never order a steak of we go out to eat. I like my steak marinated for hours, and I prefer the way my husband makes it.

    Now I want a tenderloin. ....

  • Medium rare is how I normally order it when I'm out.  At home, I cook mine more towards rare.  I've never sent a steak back or cooked one longer because of red or pink.

My rugby coach used to joke with me if we passed a field of cows that he was stopping the car and he was going to go slap one in the face and then put it on my plate.  Sounds done enough for me...  hahahaha.

  • I voted medium well, but it just depends on the quality of the steak. If I'm going to be paying 30-40 for a steak I'll get medium rare. If it is like 15 I'll go medium well...

  • I voted medium well which is usually what I order anyway. I haven't had red meat since I was about 9 weeks pregnant. Every time I ate red meat I would get sick the next day. Plus, it just doesn't sound appetizing which is really sad because I LOVE red meat.

  • I voted medium, which is what I usually order pregnant or not, but I don't eat steak that often.
  • Medium, which is the same way I eat it when not pregnant

But really, I'd have a serious problem if my H tried to tell me what to eat or how to eat it. He trusts that I know what I'm doing.

  • Normally I gross out everyone around me and get it rare to the point of almost being raw. As my dad says, swish it's tail, wipe it's horns and send it out!! I've actually been known to eat raw steak when I make it at home too (most restaurants insist you cook it at least a little). I also like it medium rare though, and since I've been pregnant that's how I've been eating it. I think it would worry me to eat it as rare as I usually do during pregnancy. Although I've gotten some crap from my family about how eating it that way should worry me even when I'm not pregnant, but whatever.

  • I am really not that picky.. to me, steak is steak but if and when I have a choice- pre-pregnancy it was medium rare, and during pregnancy (to ease my own mind) I have made a dramatic leap into medium lol

I was wondering about this the other day though-- so thank you OP for this poll!
  • Medium Rare.  Steak isn't ground, so the likelihood of parasites in the middle is incredibly low.  As long as the outside is cooked to a high enough temperature, you are fine.

I don't understand the point of eating steak if it isn't Rare or MR.  MAYBE Medium. But why spend the money on something that you are removing all the flavor from? It makes no sense to me.  I wouldn't drop $25 on a filet to ruin it by turning it into a piece of leather.....
this is LH's mother.  seriously.  i actually sat at a steak house with her and listened to her order filet, cooked well-done.  she "made" prime rib for christmas dinner last year (that she got *pre-cooked* from the grocery store)...stuck it in the oven for over a fucking hour.  it was only edible if smothered in steak sauce (which i like...but i usually like just a taste here and there).  i was like, WHY??  i mean, ultimately i don't really care how she likes to waste money on food, but i felt like telling her that her lack of culture was showing.  it's fine if you like your steak well-done, but filet mignon well-done is going to taste the same and be the same texture as a T-bone well-done, so why waste the money?  and i know the answer, it's because she's fixated on having to spend money on "the best" cut of meat, but the point of having that cut has flown completely over her head.

Haha my ILs are exactly the same. Roast tenderloin is well done. Steaks are well done. Tuna steak is even well done. WHY
