I highly, highly doubt people are running around sending pm's to call people out. It's completly counter intuitive to Internet culture. Never say never but let's not act like everyone gets called out equally behind closed doors.

I call my labour buddies out all the time in private. Just ask em they do the same to me too!
I too have taken a convo private on multiple occassions. I don't get why that is so hard to believe.
I've done that with others I would consider close and I've had private convos with bumpies I'm not super close to when the subject has been particularly hot button for me and/or the other bumpie.
To be clear, I have absolutely no doubt folks pm on here. And that's wonderful. My comment was in response to a comment that I interpreted as saying regulars get called out in private. I could have misinterpreted.
Internet forum or not, people here have built relationships. Some better than others. Just because certain people respond with what everyone else it thinking doesn't mean we are mean.
No we don't know if you are having contrations, no we don't know if that was your mucus plug, your vaginal angle has changed? Thanks for the information.
Don't ask a question you don't want to response too. Don't delete it because you didn't get the answer you wanted.
I will add, I totally have an understanding for new users who don't know how to use the site to search for post among other things.
@jj0313 I think that's why it's done in private, privacy I will leave it at that.
Knowing @maelara I'm guessing it has something to do with her disapproving views on socks and shower sex.
Bahahahaha!! Always!! How dare anyone wear socks in my presence
Or worse yet - wearing socks while having shower sex!!! I'm so doing this when my size and moans won't tip off the coast guard about a possible beached whale.
LMAO! Careful, the socks might cause slipperiness of the feet! I had to word that one really carefully...
@jj0313 I don't think you misinterpreted. That's exactly what I meant. It's ok if you don't believe it, I know it happens I've been called out in PM from people I'm not even close with and I'm glad they did so we could figure things out. A lot of that was more in the early days and things have settled.

Exactly what I meant too. I have called out and been called out via pm on here.
I just want to add one thing since everyone keeps referring to "the popular girls", I think a better term for this would be "the girls that have been posting since February and March" it really has nothing to do with being "popular". There are some of us that have been around so long we've established stronger connections. And to be honest I don't LOVE every girl that's been posting that long, we all have our own personalities but the girls that have been posting longer do get more attention, I just feel like "popular" is the wrong word.
Oh FFS. Maybe this is a UO but some of y'all take this place way to serious. Yes we share our vagina stories among other things but it's a public forum that can be accessed by Google and anyone can read everything here..Because someone decides to ask a question and not return or do an intro or whatever shouldn't give anyone permission to be a twat. Be snarky and gif the post crazy, sure but to be downright twatish, no. I've seen some regs post shit and I eye roll so hard. And it's met with hugs and T&P and tits galore from the board. We don't have to be bff. I also don't think you should blame hormones on your behavior. You act like a bitch, own it.

Frankly, I could care less who is popular and who is not. If you treat me with respect, I will treat you with respect. Period. So far I have felt nothing but support from the women in N14. (I don't think I started posting until around Mayish.)
I like having a safe place to vent/share vagina stories. I'd like to think that I would never type something that I wouldn't want people to read IRL. I'm sure I have skated thin ice sometimes, but this is a general rule that I try to follow.
Some days I take this board more serious than others. Some days I am more vulnerable/hormonal/BSC than others. If I ever act like a bitch just call me on it respectfully.

Exactly. And I just want to add that it's not just when people post "stupid shit." I've seen someone new come on and ask nicely for suggestions for a middle name or for opinions on name choice (NOT talking about "younique" spellings either) and the replies have been really rude. Including (I'm paraphrasing):
Who ARE you?
Oh good, I haven't named a stranger's baby today.
We don't even know you.
How would we know what you should name your baby?
So I'll just say again...if you don't want to reply, just don't. Why take the time to make someone feel shitty?
Who cares!? If you're asking internet strangers to name your baby you should expect any and all responses. And you can't tell people not to reply if they aren't going to contribute to these kinds of threads in a serious manner. This is an open forum where everyone is free to respond how they want.
The serious medical questions, YES I get that these women might need some support. But really who cares if people joke around a little, too, when the thread itself is not a serious one? Maybe it's a difference in personalities between those who enjoy jokes/laughter and can have a sense of humor about these things.
I voted SS because my option wasn't up there. It's "I have no idea." it seems like the board has mood swings (all the hormones maybe? ) we are nice and ok with some newbs, but then some seem to get really snarked at.
ETA: spelling is hard and auto correct is sometimes the devil!
no. just no. We are all adults and responsible for our own behavior. It has 0 to do with hormones. Yes we are hormonal because of pregnancy but that does not mean we can use it as an excuse to be jerks.
Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.
I'm totes not using hormones as an excuse, using pregnancy as an excuse to be mean/stupid/whiny is something that drives me batty. We're adults here and need to control how our hormones affect our attitude. It was just a comment that I thought was funny considering I DO feel like the board has mood swings towards newbs, and we happen to have lots of extra hormones right now. Not that I am ok with them ruling our actions.
I've seen some pretty mean comments, I haven't been around long but I don't really consider myself a "newbie" anymore. I had some pretty hateful stuff said to me when I first started, mostly because I didn't know the basics of how all this worked when I started. I just really wanted a place to go and see that other FTM's and STM's were experiencing the same things I was. The thing is for all the newbies, you have to have tough skin, realizes not everyone is rude, and try not to take everything as a jab. Some ppl are more straight forward than others.
Soonergirl131 I have to admit, this comment is pretty mystifying to me, especially after looking at your posting history. I didn't see anything directed at you that was even remotely mean. If the replies you got are considered hateful, then we're all screwed.

This. Also, @lizzielu82 I didn't think I could love you anymore than I already do, but it happened. I think name threads are fair game. Most of them are pretty ridiculous and the occasional one that intros as well as asks a name opinion have been met nicely by people.
No one is forcing people to post here. If someone doesn't like the tone of the group they don't have to be here. This is not a requirement for pregnancy or parenthood.

Completely agree. But the question was if we think the board is too mean. I think it can be. Both statements can be true. Also, just because we can be mean (and we certainly have the right to), doesn't mean we should. I'm certainly not going to stop anyone, but I can make choices for myself and answer clicks polls with my opinion.
I don't really think our board is very mean compared with other boards, though. Just the fact that we even have this thread shows we're not a bunch of heartless harpies, you know? One thing I've always liked about this group was that we're not very prone to groupthink. Everyone pretty much says what they think and it doesn't generally cause issues.
@LizWatts I guess more or less what I was trying to say was... If my interpretation of a group of people was that they were mean, and I had a choice to be "around" them or not, I would just remove myself from the situation.
In my interpretation of the board, I can't recall a time where I have seen people here be down right mean. Sarcastic yes, snarky definitely, but mean I don't think so. But again its interpretation.
Edit to add: I also think that people don't understand the difference in a debate and a fight.

I don't think people are mean just to be mean but there have been times the tone can be rude and nasty. And once one person starts it can just snowball from there. I find my space here on TB unique in a way because I was once pregnant here, now I'm not and I can somewhat remove myself emotionally and literally from certain emotions and/or thought process. It definitely has given me a different perspective. I'm not saying that nobody here can't do this, but for me I do not have an attachment to this board like most here do. (re:pregnancy)
One or two bitches on a board do not bother me. We all have the capability to be a bitch, the only issue I have is when it's every freakin "newbie" that post and it's a shit show.
My perspective is probably different than most folks here, because I am older (43) and have 5 kids, two of whom are adults. The internet wasn't even in full use when I had my first in 1992! And some 'newbies' here are the ages of my own grown kids.
So, I tend to think that occasionally, the newbies get piled on. When I see a question that may be considered 'duh' or dumb, I remember that once I was a FTM and who knows what I may have asked back in the day! So I try to respond with kindness, like how I'd respond to my own kids' questions (and they will ask you a million and one questions in their childhood).
And I still have learning to do. I just asked a question in the pumping thread. I've BF five kids but I don't know EVERYTHING and I hope that it's not seem as a stupid question! Because I really would like a real answer.
We are who we are, at this point I don't know that the board culture will change that much. Compared to other boards I don' think we are "mean." I think throughout the Bump message boards there are different "board personalities" and people just need to find the board that works for them.
That said, regs may have noticed I'm not really a confrontational person. As @mommymeg143 noted, I choose to express myself through gifs. It's how I like to respond to the crazy. If people think my gifs are too silly, too bad; it's who I am!
P.S. So excited this is culturally relevant again!
That is all.

Oh my goodness...those cheese fries. I NEED them, now!
I like snark when it's warranted, but snark for snark sake, well, it becomes a bit cliche. Like, somehow TB has some sort of "reputation" for being snarky or sarcastic. But are the members truly snarky, or does the atmosphere simply perpetuate the behavior or pseudo-snarkiness. I'm not speaking of N14 specifically, just the general vibe of what I've observed. It just seems like some people try too hard to join the club of "tough and bitchy" women when they normally wouldn't behave in such a way, especially those relatively new to online forums.
I've been part of forums with women who were truly snarky, cutting, sarcastic, and it was welcomed because the nature of the sub-forums centered around heated discussions and debates. I expect that in those settings. I make use of snark, wit and sarcasm when the situation calls for it, which rarely happens for me on pregnancy related boards. Debate boards or topics, absolutely, but other situations, nah. It just comes off a bit misplaced.
Like all of the "Call your doctor!!!!!" responses to what is often considered inane questions. I get it. We're not doctors. We can't answer medical questions. But the responses to these questions are repeated ad nauseam. Granted, there are new posters or lurkers that ask inane questions, but I don't get the overwhelming urge to respond snarkily. I simply answer their question or don't if it's one of those frequently asked questions. These are the same questions that get asked on many other forums, and others either don't respond or provide a quick response and leave it at that.
Plus, why engage in a battle of snark and wits with folks who probably can't or won't grasp the intended message anyway. I gather a lot of the folks who ask "noob" questions are fairly young and perhaps naive, among other things, so showing off one's sarcastic chops may go over their head and not have much of an affect. I tend to find the best approach is to just ignore the tedious and annoying questions rather than feeding into it.
However, I totally welcome a flaming when it's warranted, when someone truly exhibits an "open mouth, insert shoe store" moment.

Also, I voted "just right." I haven't noticed an overabundance of "meanness" on this board at all.
I've observed that TB is more mainstream than some other pregnancy/parenting related forums thanks to TK. It receives far more traffic than many others, and increased traffic means you get a wide variety of people from varied demographics. I think it's important to take that into account. It was the exact same when Cafemom launched. Exact same.
The "ask your doctor" as an immediate go-to response is new to me, and I've been participating on pregnancy forums for over a decade. It just seems misplaced with how frequently it's used. I think, as some others have said, the questions, while naive at times, are a way to initiate conversation. I've seen similar questions asked in other places that can be peppered with a similar response, but most times people simply share their experiences. Not every damn question is asked with the intention of seeking medical advice. Some people simply ask to get an idea of other people's experiences. But, I can see why lurkers or new posters arriving this late in the game can be seen as intruders or nuisances with their questions.
Another thing that's interesting, for a forum with a supposed reputation of snarkiness and "sound advice" giving, there seems to be a general ignorance or lack of understanding of practices that exist outside mainstream or TB circles. I've seen people post questions in here and other boards that throw people off and make them question the individual's grey matter simply because they themselves are not familiar with a particular practice. Placenta encapsulation isn't "new," I promise. It's been around long before TK launded TB. I can see why these and similar practices may be odd to new parents, but it doesn't make the person inquiring a dolt or uninformed or whatever. So the snark is completely unnecessary and silly in these situations.
And often, those individuals not familiar with said practices are relatively new to the birthosphere. When, in fact, said practices have been around for many years. For instance, breastfeeding beyond a year. I've seen heated threads where people exclaim not understanding it or thinking it's weird or unnecessary. I guess I don't understand it because it's such an outdated response to something well documented and supported.
I also can't help but chuckle at some of the inconsistent advice and snarkiness. Like everyone and their four-legged sister will jump on a woman who posts something about having her membranes sweeped at 38 weeks because "ZOMG!!!! You're an idiot! Your baby isn't full term!!! Look at this March of Dimes and ACOG article for proof!" Oh, but once mom has reached 39 weeks it's suddenly okay, or somehow other interventions with just as much data to challenge it somehow don't receive the same treatment. A bunch of those same moms will gladly induce for their not-really-big-baby even though it is NOT supported by the evidence. Makes me wonder.
Yes, its ill-advised to induce before full term, and it's ill-advised, based on a plethora of evidence, to rupture membranes without cause (which there is none) or induce (for the 80% of low risk women), especially when mom's body isn't ready, no matter if she's 39 or 40 weeks. And seeing a good chunk of inductions turn into c-sections, well, I can't say I'm surprised. But these choices rarely receive the same amount of criticism. The only time everyone hops on the "look at the new data" bandwagon is when the discussion is about the new full term guidelines, all other concerns and practices are otherwise ignored by the large majority. Cherry-picking what to be informed about makes little sense to me. It becomes more about hopping on a bandwagon than actually being informed and providing support.
