  • @Econosaurus‌ nyc is $2800/month for an infant.

My hospital has shared rooms and I am freaked out about sharing a shower an toilet with a bleeding stranger. How is it possibly sanitary? What if they have a std or something transmitable?

  • My MIL talks about her births sometimes. She delivered in a military hospital each time, and it just sounds... yikes. I'm sure it depends on where you are, and this was about thirty years ago, but still. Five or six women in a recovery room. One woman whose baby would never stop crying, and she just ignored it. Another woman who insisted on playing her radio loudly at all hours so her baby would get used to the noise. Oyyyy.

If I were having my baby in a hospital, I would totally pay extra for a private room.

  • @heisenberg I don't know about it being standard procedure in hospitals, definitely something to talk to your doctor about. My midwife carries pitocin at home births in case of excessive postpartum bleeding or hemorrhage, but that's an "as needed" situation, certainly not the default.

  • I hope this hasn't been addressed (this thread is getting long!). I just reviewed my doctor's paperwork and it says they administer pitocin after delivery. I've done some googling and obvi I will talk to my OB, but I'm curious if this practice is widespread (among our small sample size here) and what people's prior experiences were with this.
The nurse who did the childbirth class at our hospital said they give it to everyone after birth.  I had never heard of this until the class, so maybe one of those things that varies widely from hospital to hospital, practice to practice.
  • When you store bottles, do you keep on the shelves with the nipples, rings, and lids on, or off?

My hospital does this as standard practice to deliver the placenta. I didn't even notice it when they did it, after giving birth it was just relief that baby was OUT. (Had med-free birth with DS.)

Do I really need to call the doctor for regular braxton hicks contractions? I don't see what the doctor is going to do at this point, until it's actual labor. I'm having Braxton hicks contractions (about 11 an hour) but they don't hurt so far.

I would call. My doctor said 5 Braxton Hicks in 1 hour, and/or if they are settling into a pattern, needs checked out.

  • @CatLady22‌ yeah I would call, my OB said more than 4 an hour to call. I don't think I am noticing all of mine, but I don't think I am getting them anywhere near that often.

  • My DH found a microwave bottle sterilizer at BRU, yesterday. He is OCD and loves anything that cleans. I noticed a lot of the bottle brands have the microwave sterilizer but I am not sure about it. I feel like it's not safe because you hear all the horror stories about plastic chemicals being expelled in the microwave.

Do any of you ladies have experience with one of these? Would you recommend it?

  • 1) Emmy has a lot of frilly, lace, tutu, what have you clothes.  (SHOCKING...I know).  Do I need to wash those too?  I'm afraid if I wash them in the washing machine, it will ruin them and if I hand wash them...I will leave the soap residue on the clothes which will more than likely irrate her skin.  What should I do?

    2) My face is SO swollen.  I look like a chipmunk.  So much so that people are making comments about it.  "You're only showing in your stomach and face!!"  "Your face has definitely gotten alot bigger this week."  "Have you been crying...your face is puffy".    My stupid question is...Is this normal?  I'm really not swelling anywhere else but my face.

    1. I would put it in a delicates bag (like a mesh bag that closes securely) and then wash on the delicate cycle.

    2. No idea if it is normal, but I'm having a similar experience, my face has doubled in size this week (at least it feels that way)  each morning when i wake up my face is a little bit bigger!!

    Thanks for posting this @mommymeg143!

I was told today that my LO has a pretty sizable head. I'm now seriously worried it won't be able to come out. Anyone else had a big-headed baby and is there still hope for trying to go for a vaginal birth?

So much this!  When I went thru my birth class they told us about CPD I am now terrified that is going to be me!

My question is about birthing plans.  In my class on Saturday they showed us one and it was just a written bullet point of what the mother wanted.. but the instructor said that you should be careful how you word stuff so that they dont offend... anyone know where I can see more examples? I have done a little googling and have not been impressed with what I have found.

There are a bunch of websites that have black birth plans that you fill in and then can print out.  I did mine on the Earth Mama Angel Baby site.  My midwife really liked the way that it was set up.
  • @mommymeg143‌ I used the microwave sterilizer every day when N was an infant, especially with breast pump parts. I hated using the dishwasher because it discoloured the bottle parts (made them orange) and I worried about food particles getting all over them. For that reason I hand washed everything and then sterilized them in the microwave. Every. Single. Night.

Are humidifiers a must? A girlfriend with 2 kids insisted it needs to be at the top of my "still need to buy" list cuz she says all newborns sound like little warthogs when they sleep cuz of amniotic fluid clearing out of their lungs or something -- and the humidifier is the only thing that helps? I've never heard that before prior to her mentioning it.. Anyone care to chime in with any advice or experience?
I've heard that humidifiers are really important in preventing SIDS, however I will be moving to a very humid area as soon as LO is born, not sure if I would still need one?
  • I can't remember who asked the reflux question or if it was answered but I will answer anyway. Do you mean for yourself or or the baby? If it's yourself, my BFF who had a baby had it really bad and had it after birth for quite a while. Most of the time it goes away but there is a possibility it won't. N had reflux and she had it for along time. It also dos not go away quickly.
  • To all my mommas in Canada: is it just my insurance company that sucks or do yours not cover pumps either? And considering I will be paying out of pocket what should I do?
    A) go south of the boarder (are they cheaper there-should probably have looked that up before asking)
    B) suck it up and pay a few hundred dollars for a good one
    C) any other suggestions on which one/where I can get one?

I feel really frustrated, DH really wants me to breastfeed, but I feel so overwhelmed that I thought it might be nice to have a pump so I can enjoy wine some evenings or just not feel like a all you can eat buffet 24/7. But after looking at some stores I don't really want to spend 400-600$ for a "good pump". Oh and to add to the pressure my MIL is a La Lache League leader and is very sure that even the smallest bit of formula will kill my child.

My insurance also doesn't cover... But I also have a crappy plan lol. I am thinking I will just end up sucking it up and dropping $400 up here. Some people have suggested getting a used one and buying new tunes etc but that still kinda weirds me out...if it was someone I knew MAYBE, but not a stranger....

As far as I know my insurance doesn't cover one either. SIL gave me her Medela, so I am set for one myself, BUT if I didn't have one I would definitely look at renting before buying one, especially because of how you're feeling about breastfeeding. I know when I looked at renting one the local La Leche League had info about it and it seemed pretty reasonable. That way you know that a) pumping works for you and b) you like the pump and would buy one. Since MIL is a La Leche leader she might have info about renting?
  • @Jatpa003‌ my insurance doesn't cover a pump either. Maybe try to bf and see if even want to do it first. Then, invest in a pump. If you're close enough to the boarder, go get it there. I have the medela swing and it's only a single electric pump. I wish I had gotten the double but if you only plan to use it occasionally maybe you will only need a single.

    Double post!
  • I know we have discussed this at length, and I'm sorry for bringing it up again but I keep going back and forth on this.  Where will your baby sleep?  Ideally, I would have the LO sleep in a pack n play in my bedroom, but there is NO SPACE.  DH wants LO in his crib in the nursery day one but i've read "rooming in" if you will reduces SIDS risk plus what if he doesn't like all that space?  I know some swear by the rock n play which was what I was leaning towards but they aren't officially recommended for sleep and now I'm worried about torticollis.  This one issue has me completely stressed out.

  • Thanks @Maelara‌ @AnnieRoo13‌ @NunyaBennis‌ @Curlyfries851‌ for your advice. It seems like Not many insurances cover it...
Also my MIL although she is a LLL leader she is convinced that because she couldn't pump (I think her words were "only real moms don't pump because they cannot let down unless they have their child on boob") so ya even though I have asked her about it she always brushes me off. I want to do what is best for my child but I also want some sanity. I guess I will suck it up and buy one here, but I will for sure look into renting one maybe from the hospital first.
  • Thanks @Carebella and @Maelara.  I read something similar about the maternal breathing.  I think I will look into bassinets.  Hopefully I can find a small one, DH's old bassinet was huge plus it's almost 40 years old sitting in MIL's garage.  SIL used a Moses basket for her LO, but I want something that is raised up from the floor (unreasonably freaked about stepping on the LO).  I was debating co-sleeper, but it would have to be attached at the foot of the bed due to room configuration and something about baby sleeping where my feet are just doesn't sit right with me :)

Flip over for a few months so your head would be at the foot of the bed?

I've had it pretty bad. Like I have to sleep in our recliner bad.

We bought a bassinet for our room to use when she's first born. We have a pack n play as well, but our room isn't big enough
