Diaper bag discussion

Hey Ladies,
My only worry is that it is too big. I know that diaper bags have to carry tons of stuff, I am just curious if this size is ok....

So, STM's and those ladies who have already bought or are researching diaper bags, what are your thoughts??

thanks!

Re: Diaper bag discussion

  • We're on baby #4 and what I found is get whatever bag you like. It doesn't have to be a "diaper bag".
We do a lot of outdoor activities and I've found a big messenger bag or one shoulder strap (book bag) work perfect. One thing I look for is lots of pockets and compartments and that the bag is expandable.
Trust me, you will eventually care less if your diaper bag is color coordinated etc. I found my husband was also more apt to grab the book bag style bags versus a traditional diaper bag.
Bottom line is that bag will be your life line for outings for the next few years, lol. Pick what works for you and your family.

  • @katiekeller‌ thanks for the tip!! I guess I just need to get used to the size of diaper bags haha

  • I dont think its to big but i always carried a buttload of stuff! As they age you'll need less stuff (or can leave some in car) so you can downsize.

I agree with it not having to be an actual diaper bag. My brother just carried a large backpack.

  • I went through a couple with DS, started with the skip hop duo but it was too small and it was hard to dig out things you needed at the bottom. I bought a jujube bff from the FB BST page which has the backpack straps that make it really easy to carry around. After a year we hardly used it and just carried a jujube quick with diapers, wipes, portable changing pad and diaper cream. Like @HerHighness‌ said you'll need o carry less as they get older. I watched a few diaper bag pack videos on YouTube before we bought our 2nd one.

  • We switched to a black jansport backpack when dd was about 15 months. So easy.

  • I think that bag is fine. A few things though...

For me, I like something that doesn't show too much dirt or can be wiped down. Also, I felt like carrying a bag that I didn't have the option of wearing on my back always got in the way or it would slip off of my shoulder.  I went from a cute Coach bag, to a regular diaper bag, to a backpack. I might get a Petunia or something similar this time around because it is a little more girly than the North Face backpack I had been using. The North Face, Patagonia, other day packs are nice because they have lots of compartments. It's all about what works best for you. :)

  • It looks to be a good size to me. At first you carry diapers, wipes, changes of clothes (diaper explosions and spit up happen), burp clothes, blankets, rash cream (I always carry it) and then other small things. I also kept a hand pump and bottles in case we were out longer than anticipated.

I switched from our diaper bag to a messenger bag or over sized purse when DS was 6 though.

  • I went with the Kate spade Stevie bag. I bought it for a friend 6 years ago and she still uses it as a personal bag. I like the one you picked because like mine it doesn't scream diaper bag and you can use it years down the road as a great tote...

  • I got the lug tuk tuk diaper bag. I love it. It has the straps to go on the stroller, tons of pockets and a mesh pockets. Lots of room for everything.

Now that DS is 2 we have just switched to a skip hop backpack that he loves to carry.
I'll go back once baby is born to my lug bag.

  • I don't think it's too big.  I'm a fan of backpacks. We have a FisherPrice backpack that is not holding up after a year of use, so we're going to get a DaisyGear (DadGear brand) back pack. I love having wipes accessible from the outside.

Jujube Be All is what I had the first time around. To date, it is the most impressive quality and most practical bag I have EVER used.

I also have a Timi & Leslie Charlie bag, which is chic looking.... a "celebrity favorite." but honestly Jujube is more practical and better qual.

  • Omg @angiean! My DH is a ff too! And now we also know what we want! And I now also have an endless supply of gifts for him!
  • I personally don't feel like theres such a thing as too big a diaper bag. My DD was a puker and I could be out somewhere and she destroy every spare outfit I brought with me and sometimes that would be 4 different things.

I think the bag you got is fine.

I personally didn't buy a diaper bag for this baby. I saw a cute plaid bag at target that was labeled a duffel bag and I plan on using it. And its probably huge and I question whether its big enough or not.

  • I'm a FTM and I just bought mine last week! I got the Vera Bradley Make a Change bag. I researched it and it got good review's. We will see.
  • Holy cow some of these are $$$$ but I guess it's worth it?
  • I have a Vera Bradley and it's okay. Dh has one that we ordered off of the NYY website. We use that one more. It's a messenger bag and made of cleanable canvas. I'm worried if it wil be big enough with 2u2. I may sell the Vera and get a bigger messenger.

I got the fisher price back pack the first time around ($40) and some of the seams are ripping after a year of use. This time we are spending $100 on a daisygear/dad gear backpack in hopes that it will last longer. We liked all the features of the fisher price, but the quality just wasn't there unfortunately.

I get it depends on what people see as worth it. To me its not because its just a bag you throw all your kids crap in. But to eaches own.

Oh my gosh the amount of money people spend on diaper bags is insane! They hang from a stroller, drag on the floor, get food spilt in them and on them, and simply get trashed! My $30 one I purchased and have used for 2 1/2 years now works fantastic! I would personally go cheaper route!

  • I don't think it's to big at all. I'm going to be a first time mom and I personally am not a fan of diaper bags.. So I ended up getting the LV neverfull GM (the bag is huge) especially on me being just under 5ft which I will be using as a diaper bag as well as putting any of my personal belongs in! Personally I think the bigger the better, your better off having more room then not enough room for baby's things and anything extra that mommy needs.
  • @mirigirl‌ yup, that's why I said personally I would go cheaper :)

ehhhh you might soon discover that's less than ideal. I don't like diaper bags either-- last baby I sold my jujube while prego and decided to just use my LV Totally and all the baby stuff really did a number on it (you can't easily clean spills, leaks, crumbs, etc like you can with *real* diaper bags that are made with insulated teflon type linings,) the straps are thin so when it gets heavy it digs in, and there is no easy way to clip it to a stroller! in the case of the Neverfull, there is no zipper and I have learned that all baby bags need a zipper OR a flap with some king of magnetic closure (like the jujube be all does) for securing stuff but also easy access. At the very least you will want to get a waterproof organizer insert for your bag.
  • I'm in the market for a chic backpack to use this time around
  • I spied a Petunia Pickle Bottom bag in a local shop and scored one (okay two!) on Amazon for much less than I saw in store. I'm a first time mom but read great reviews about them - and the outside seems very durable and easy to clean. Love that the one converts from handbag to backpack!! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EBGTL04/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?qid=1412589637&sr=8-13&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

I registered for this bag as well - I also bought the harper tote myself in store because it was on sale. It looks like a nice size when I don't want to use the classic. But then again, I'm a FTM so what the heck do I know :)

I bought the leather shoulder strap for mine when I had baby and it was a lifesaver. Also think about getting a purse organizer for it. Just cause it's SO big with no pockets. But it's awesome and I did the same thing and am doing that again with this baby.

Although I'm a minimalist and stop carrying a diaper bag at 6-9 months and just use once of my handbags with a big pouch for baby stuff and keep extra diapers and an outfit in the car.
