Help dress me because I am clueless

Re: Help dress me because I am clueless

  • Leggings aside, I'm still scratching my head as to why anyone thinks oatmeal & gray should ever be paired together like that.
I'd say it depends on the shade of gray (are there 50 to choose from?? =)) ) For real, though, according to "What Not to Wear" many neutrals that are traditionally not mixed at all can actually be pulled off so I wouldn't automatically dismiss the gray, though I'd probably want to see what these leggings in question looked like.

Honestly I'd also opt for jeans over leggings, but I don't own a single pair of leggings, so there's that. But that wasn't the question.....the question was about the color of the tank underneath, so that's what I chose to answer. Then again, KC, you did say "leggings" and "juniors department" so what exactly were you expecting to happen here? :P

Honestly I have a darker shade of grey and a lighter one. Which one would you go for? I was thinking darker but I may be off base.
Definitely darker, and better if they have blue-ish undertones....making them look more like jeans lol

  • I have a cardigan like that but teal. I love it with my skinny jeans. They are pretty comfy & I don't worry about my butt showing.
I also think a jewel color would be best for a shirt underneath or black.

  • What color boots would you wear with gray leggings and oatmeal sweater?

What color cami was the mom at the park wearing?

I'm so confused by this possible outfit, but I can't help trying to picture it in any way that wouldn't be all washed out.

And I can't help myself...now that you know how vehemently the majority of women here feel about leggings not being pants, do you still wear them, but walk around wondering, do all the women who see me think I'm insane for wearing these as pants? I would.

And I do have that sweater, or last year's version of it.  I love it.  I got it on sale in 2 colors from the women's section, and then wanted more but they didn't have the color I wanted in women's so I bought the juniors (in the same xl size I got in women's), and they fit exactly.the.same.  Might just be because it's xl though.  Anyway, I wear my oatmeal colored ones with skinny dark jeans, white cami, and necklace or scarf with color.

The mom had a sweater on (and not a super long one or a dress, the shame!) and I thought to myself I have a sweater that color, should probably try that. I may or may not be picking up fashion tips from other moms at the park. :\">

And no, I have no qualms about wearing leggings as pants despite this board. They're really popular around here and honestly more often than not I see people wearing them with tunics/sweaters that don't cover 100% of their bum. I think it looks good still barring someone with leggings as thin as tights that's rocking camel toe or you can see their underwear through them. I wear leggings as thick as jeggings (which seem to be more socially acceptable) minus the pockets I find cheesy so the blanket statements don't really apply to me. And even so I'm sure people who don't like the style wear stuff I wouldn't be caught dead in. Such is life.

If you do an oatmeal sweater, I would buy dark brown leggings with brown knee high boots.  It does look like the sweater covers most of the butt
I like this suggestion. I think with the teal underneath to help the outfit 'pop' so to speak, would really make it look nice and well put together. Or if you wanted to switch it up, I like magenta under a lot of stuff as well.

If you really want to do the grey, I'd need to see some pictures. I just can't picture it in my head very well and it may look fine or it could be horrible. It really just depends on the colors.

Ok, I have definitely seen oatmeal and grey together.
In fact, I am pretty sure I have a striped sweater from the gap with those 2 colors.
But I am having a problem with those buttons though. I just don't know about mixing brown in with them. Brown and grey - is risky.
I honestly feel like I need to see it put together before forming an opinion.

I haven't been able to post Pictures all summer on my apple products. It never loads. Is there a fix?

  • Yea I don't think oatmeal and gray is odd. Aren't "they" saying its the new color combination this year for fall?

Hooray for long nap times, I am now analyzing what the color oatmeal looks like.

  • See those aren't grey to me. That is charcoal. Big difference

It looks better than I was picturing, but I think it was Lala that said she didn't like the darker cami with a light sweater, and I agree. I don't like how you can see the cami through the sweater material

That's a really great point about being able to see the color through. I have a variety of white shirts. Could I do that or am I going to have to buy a similar color to pull it off?
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I agree with @eaglesfan700 I like the way it looks, but I don't like that you can see the teal through the sweater. I'm no help though, because I don't know what color you could use to make it work.

Also when I admitted to stealing the look from another mom at the park you should have known I don't have enough fashion sense to differentiate grey from charcoal. :P

  • That's exactly why. Oh well, we fell for it, we will know better next time.
  • Never wear a cardigan buttoned up over leggings...ever.

    Wasn't intending on it.

I can't figure out why you would post this except to stir shit up.

To get feedback on colors perhaps?

  • I don't always think leggings as pants are terrible. I do think there are a few exceptions BUT that outfit does not work.

If you want a similar look I'd go with dark or black skinny jeans and keep the sweater unbuttoned and add a scarf.

I have it ingrained in my head that brown and black don't go together. Is that not true anymore? Could I pull that off with black skinnies/black boots?
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Maybe. I'd have to see it but I don't think it would look bad. I used to be anti brown with black too but I actually think sometimes it looks nice. I have a pair of black leggings I pair with a carmelish longish sweater and brown boots and I always get compliments.

Now, DH trying his brown belt with his black dress shoes? No.

  • Google brown and black together....lots of pictures. Then you save yourself the pain of having to hear all of us be annoyed.
  • Dark jeans look good with oatmeal and tan, but you're weird {about jeans and well everything} so I'm sure those are out.
  • I'm not anti-leggings as pants if they're thick enough, but I don't think the sweater will work well with leggings. If you must, brown leggings are my vote.

Not related to this outfit, necessarily, but... I just bought dark grey corduroy pants from the Gap, maybe you should check those out since you hate jeans? They're more comfortable than jeans but still have structure. They had a really cute lighter brown color that I liked, that would probably look really good with that sweater.

    Or this maybe?

  • First- that sweater isn't camel or even brown. It looks tan. Are those leggings or yoga pants. They look wrinkled. My leggings never get wrinkled but my yoga pants do. That shirt underneath is a no. The whole outfit looks strange. Black skinny jeans would look a whole lot better.

It's oatmeal colored which is a super light shade of tan I guess you'd describe it as? And yes, those are leggings. They have a fit like yoga pants and wrinkle just the same. The whole outfit was in my hamper to be washed.

  • I agree, the scarf is where I'd add color. But I really really like color so that might be part of it. :D I'm into coral, teal, and mint right now as accents.

Ok, I didn't want to poke the bear, but why are you weird about jeans?

I just don't like wearing them every.single.day. I wore that sweater out for dinner with jeans and a brown tank and liked it just fine but on a Tuesday where I'm doing errands, picking the kids up from school then doing the park I'd much rather be in leggings (or yoga pants) over jeans.
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Nope - those colored leggings would not work with that top.  I honestly think the top would look better with a lighter blue pair of jeans.  I would do a dark brown or cream colored cami underneath.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Also yes haters I got it in the juniors department and no it doesn't cover my bum. :P
Of course you did. I only wear black leggings. Black only.

That doesn't sound like any fun.

  • DING DING DING @CnAmom is the winner...BRILLIANT idea. Shop where the clothes were actually meant to fit you and they will...fit you!
  • I have this cardigan in two colors (from the women's section). You cannot wear that cardigan buttoned over leggings. It just will not look good on even the best body. I am personally not a huge fan of oatmeal as a dominant color. I think it washes people out. However, since you already have the cardigan, wear it with a white tank and a colorful scarf with pants or jeans. Some things cannot be forced with leggings.

One more thing. If you shop in the women's department you might find clothes that actually cover your ass.

Reading comprehension fail. I said I only found a single cut in old navy that fits well, not that I deduced women's clothing didn't fit well because I went to old navy.

Am I the only one who thinks dresses and leggings look weird together? I wouldn't be caught dead in that third outfit. I mean the first shirt definitely doesn't go either but I honestly think it looks better than that dress. I've seen very few dresses look cute with leggings. I think they only go with tunic/longer tops.

Go spend good money on a pair if well fitting jeans not old navy. You can thank me later. Dresses look way better with leggings than a sweater that doesn't cover your ass. I would put money on the fact you look like a train wreck daily.
