Thank you...we took LO go doctor today due to a cough that has picked up and now more frequent. I was worried LO caught what DH and I have but doctor said it was from the reflux and changed our medication for LO to prevacid
Question....with those that baby have been diagnosed with reflux...did your baby sound like they were having a hard time breathing (almost like they are congested) Went to the doctor yesterday and I'm thinking LO has a cold (DH and I have both been sick) but doctor insists that it is LO reflux even though there are new symptoms. His breathing is making me very nervous because he sounds so congested yet no boogers...it's almost like a wheezing. I mentioned to doctor the virus going around or a cold and that DH and I were sick but she said LO lungs sounded fine. So long story short ...with diagnosed reflux what symptoms did LO have?
@jennp1979 I have most certainly heard of the congested sounds being a part of reflux. LO hasn't been diagnosed yet, but he is so very congested sounding, along with other symptoms I know he has reflux.
Wow, I had no idea that the congestion sound was reflux related. Thanks for sharing guys. Count me in the group that was ready to call the dr with this new symptom.
Question: those of you with LO's on reflux meds--did the medicine completely stop the reflux symptoms? DD has been on Axid almost two weeks and she definitely sleeps better and doesn't cry when put on her back anymore, but she still has congestion, coughs a lot, and makes a throat clearing noise when she sleeps. Is it normal for her to still do that while on the meds?

@shortstack930 He is definitely better but I still can't do some things with him and he still has some of the more mild symptoms. He has been on meds for 3 weeks.
My LO was on Axid for almost 3 weeks...his symptoms got worse...the coughing and congestion so that's why the doctor switched us to Prevacid because the Axid didn't work
Hmm interesting! I'll talk to the pedi, maybe they'll want to switch her to something else. Thanks @lowen83 and @jennp1979

Most of the meds out there for reflux don't stop it completely, they have to outgrow it for it to totally stop, but the meds help reduce the acid levels so it doesn't cause damage to their esophagus or any discomfort for them.
@ZeroZeroOne oh okay, DD is basically the same way--she never had the spit up issue but definitely is less fussy and sleeps better.

So over the last few days DD's reflux is back in full force. I don't know why the medicine would just stop helping after a month? I guess I will be calling the pedi tomorrow. Hopefully they won't think I'm crazy! She's still gaining weight, but screams in so much pain during eating and has started coughing quite a bit more that she ever has while eating.
Thanks for the thread ladies. I thought DD was just a crabby baby starting at about 2w old. Lots of crying, hard times falling asleep and just not happy. She tries to stand when being burped and cries when she spits up or burps. She also brings her knees to her chest throughout the day and kicks like crazy. Last week we tried Alimentim and it was worse. We go back this week and I'm going to discuss it more with the pedi.
If any of you girls have updates, let us know how everything is working!
For those of you given Prevacid...how long did it take for the medicine to work and did things get worse before they got better?
Little one has been on Prevacid for one week and today the spit up is worse then before the medicine. It seems like it is hit or mess with the spit up… Things seem to be getting better but today I feel like were starting all over again

Our spit up is worse on Axcid but she seems to be complaining less. Hopefully it's helping!
@shortstack930 When do you give the first Axcid of the day? We have a hard time giving it before the first feeding and then she's complaining at the feeding. You give 3x a day?
How many ounces at a time and per day do your lo's with reflux eat? Ellie was about 25 ounces a day but only drinks 2-4oz at a time every 2 hours or so
@BBColt78 we only give it twice a day. I give it to her after I feed her in the morning and then right before she goes to bed at night. She's usually screaming that she's hungry when she wakes up so it would be tough to give it to her before she eats.

@BBColt78 agreed! How do you give it to her? We stick it in the nipple of a bottle and let her suck on it until she drinks it all. It makes it a little easier.

I prepare three 3.5 oz bottles for the sitter then he is bf the rest if the time. I'm saying he eats around 24 oz a day. Over eating is a trigger for reflux too.
How many ounces at a time and per day do your lo's with reflux eat? Ellie was about 25 ounces a day but only drinks 2-4oz at a time every 2 hours or so
DS eats 3.5 oz every 2-3 hours for a total of 24.5 oz per day (breast milk). He usually only eats once in the middle of the night.
We are doing 2-4oz every 2-3hrs for a total of about 16-22oz per day. My total numbers are worrying me, and I'm looking forward to seeing the dr at the 4mo check up to discuss it. LO weighed 11.6 pounds last week.
So I think DS needs a dosage increase. He has been arching his back while nursing (and yes pulling on me in the process... ouch!!) and when I burp him he screams and tries to arch his back and literally stands up. He was 10 lb 3 oz when they prescribed it, and is close to 13 lb now.
Are they suppose to get higher dosages with weight gain? Right now he is getting the 0.8 mL in the morning and before bed.
My Ds was 13lbs when he got zantac, he takes 1mL twice a day and hes doing great with it hes close to 15lbs now and still doing good but usually with more weight they need more. My pedi said give it until his next check up (tomorrow) to let it kick in and see how it goes to see if he would need an increase because he gains weight on the faster side.
So dd takes Axcid 3x a day. Worked great a few days... Less standing, arching, crying. Third day things not so great so we upped it to .8 from .5 at dr suggestion. Three times a day and she's still complaining at most feedings. Sucks.
And wtf!!! Since meds, she's spitting up a lot more and more often! Anyone?
@BBColt78 DS had been spitting up more since starting meds but it's always while burping or right after a feeding and it doesn't seem to bother him. Before meds it was hour or more after he ate. So it's an improvement.
Our LO was struggling too. Dr. upped meds from .3 to .5. it's been 48 hrs and we noticed a big improvement. only spit up once! hoping it's not a fluke.
The reflux medication only treats the acid. The reflux symptoms of congestion and gurgling won't go away until their digestive system matures. Our GI doctor said this usually happens when they are able to start sitting up on their own.
My LO is on .8 @ 3 times a day and I think generic of Zantac is ranitidine. I don't wake her to give her a dose. I end up doing twice a day instead of 3 times. I see my pedi soon and wonder if she will up the dose. She originally wanted me to put baby oatmeal in her bottle to treat reflux. From the sharing here, I felt an Rx would be a better remedy than adding cereal to bottle. I honestly did want to add solids at 2 months.
The Zantac has provided so much relief, she sleeps through the night. She still spits up, but I don't here her choking it down hours after feeding. She still suffers from painful gas, and is a crappy napping, but at least she gets about 8 hours straight every night. She mostly wants to be held all day, in my arms, in the car carrier, or in her stroller moving.
