Things that you should NOT add to your registry.

Re: Things that you should NOT add to your registry.

  • My SIL (who is a complete princess) registered for a fancy robe for herself and several nice body lotions. That was tacky in my book. They were part of Amazon.com's universal registry (linked to an external site), so I don't believe there is any kind of completion discount associated. IMO, items like that are a sweet gift for a spouse or gal pal to spoil the new momma with, but putting them on a baby registry is not so bueno.

  • Ug, you guys have started your registries? I haven't even thought about it, not even one to start online! It's probably because I haven't even had an ultrasound yet... To answer the poll: I don't know what not to add, or where to start! Did I help? ;)

There is a part of me that agrees with this statement, although I don't think it's do or die. I personally wouldn't register for something I wouldn't be willing to buy, but I don't think it's a universal law, as in to say I shouldn't I register for items I prefer for baby to have because I can't afford it.

  • As far as tackiness goes, I think anything baby related is fair game to be on the registry. I always assume furniture and other high ticket items are there for the completion discount or so groups can pitch in together to get a big item if they want to.

I would caution registering for tons of one brand of bottle, since some babies have a strong preference or aversion to different ones. Maybe a small 1-2 pack of a few highly rated brands to see what works best. Same with pacifiers - different shapes/sizes that your kid might or might not like. Unless you really like a certain item of clothing, I wouldn't register for much, since people are going to want to buy baby clothes they think are cute anyway.

Exactly!! I feel like we said this once and will say it again,  I am at the point if I want it I will get it either gifted or purchased myself.  My registry is loaded, my SIL informed us that we don't
need 2 momaroos, but that doesn't mean I won't get them.

  • Most people who attend showers are moms, aunts, grandmas, etc. I doubt they "think about boobs" when they see nursing materials on a registry. They think about how the mom is feeding her baby. It's a completely natural way of life, and completely natural to register for. I'm sure they don't give it a second thought. Plus it's not like they HAVE to buy it...
  • I did put breast feeding supplies in there but plan to buy them myself before the invites go out. But if they are on there we get "credit" for them and it will be included in the 10% back
  • I say register for whatever is for baby :) there's nothing to be embarrassed about breast feeding accessories. Also, (most) showers are all women. Although recently there's a lot more that include men. And as for registering for expensive items, most places you register give you points once an item is bought if it's on your registry. So if you're gonna buy it yourself anyways, you should register for it to get those points. :)

Fair enough on the for the baby not school age children. However, IMO, it is tacky to register for a crib so grandparents can have a crib (or whatever else), since a shower is for the mom not the family. I have always heard to register for the first year, within reason. (Ex: If you're going to use an infant seat don't register for a convertible seat, but that is more because it may cut down on the life of the convertible seat.)

I agree with jaztastic that expensive is in the eye of the beholder. To me, dropping $200 on a wrap for baby wearing isn't expensive; to someone else it is. However, if the parents wouldn't buy it, it shouldn't be on the registry.
Meh. Agree to disagree. No one is twisting my arm to buy the duplicate item. If I don't want to buy it I won't.

@sugahcookie01 if you are refering to her comment about the car seats. She's saying that putting a convertible car seat on your registry is a bad idea if you don't plan to use it right away. As soon as car seats are manufactured they have a ticking clock on them. If you get one at your shower (say at 8-4 weeks before baby is born), then you an infant seat for as long as you can, that can be a year before you even use the convertible car seat. That's a year off 5-7 years you will be able to use it. For people who get the lifetime seats, or plan to be able to use seats for multiple children, this can be an issue.

I definitely agree with this. Another point is that you learn so much about car seats after you have a baby. And new ones are released all the time. By the time your child is ready for the convertible seat the one you have may not be the one you want. Lastly, you won't know your child's build til they are here and growing. My DD is super tall. She grew out of her infant seat (maxi-cosi mico) by 6mos. By then we knew we needed a convertible seat for a very tall child (went with maxi-cosi pria 70 - which is still the best seat for tall kids).

  • I wouldn't register for anything boob related... only cause I would feel awkward about writing a card that said "Thanks for the breast pump!"
I would side eye very large/very expensive purchases like nursery furniture. Where I am from that isn't something you put on a registry but it could be totally common somewhere else.
We were specifically instructed by our families to put large items, like a rocking chair and crib, on the registry because they wanted to purchase them for us. I figure, as long as you also include a range of priced items, put down what you need!

I registered for nipple cream and pads. I wouldn't register for a bra, just because I don't even know what size I am going to be when my milk comes in!!

The only weird thing I think we registered for, aside from boob stuff, is books. We registered for all our favorite books from when we were kids--Richards Scarry's Bunnies, Corduroy, Polar Express, etc--even though a newborn obviously can't appreciate them yet. We didn't register for any toys or play things, though.

  • i think if its for the baby in any way its fine! We registered for all kinds of stuff...for the baby. That what a registry is for right! Best things we got were the RNP, A&A swaddle blankets & the zippy that our LO sleeps in now & loves. Zippy wasn't on my registry tho but a friend bought it bc her LO loved it so much. Oh & looooots of diapers!

  • REGISTER FOR ALL THE THINGS!

But seriously though, if it's what you need for baby, nursing, or pregnancy at all; add it to the list. Most of the people shopping your list will probably have had kids of their own and know what to expect to see on a registry. Now, me personally, I would never add super expensive items to my registry just for the sake of them being super expensive and my baby absolutely must be given the best of the best. To me, that's just encouraging "silver spoon" syndrome for when the child gets older and expects to be given top shelf everything. But again, that's just me personally. As OP said in a response to this thread, "to each their own."

So you would be against this must-have $2200 baby hot tub?

    image

LOL! Ok, I'll admit that's pretty cool, especially since we have a hot tub of our own, however, yes I personally would just because I don't see the point in having it, plus our friends and family don't have a ton of money to spend on extravagant items like this. But I do have to admit that this thing is pretty cool. Interesting find ;)

  • Eh, I figure I'm gonna have to get over shy-ness with the whole world staring at and prodding my vag. Nipple cream doesn't make me uncomfortable. And yes, my family will know I'm gonna fight like hell to breast feed this baby! I'm ok with that! On a sweet note, my BIL called after our A/S and offered to buy a "big ticket item" for us, so he's buying our crib. I teared up :)

  • I told DH last night, half serious/half joking, that I wanted to add some Milkscreen test strips to our registry.  He said his mom would die.  I said my friends would applaud!

  • I think some electronics like a new camera, video recorder or an X-box is a bit inappropriate as are gifts for older siblings.  I mean yes I understand that new parents might need a new camera but that is reaching a bit.

Personally I'm not comfortable adding them, but don't side eye it. I side eye the people that put nursery decor or non baby related things. Also, garbage cans. Just because someone doesn't want a diaper genie or equivalent doesn't mean they should register for a garbage can.
I'm including nursery decor so people can tell our theme if they choose to get something for the nursery. My sister advised me on that because she didn't put anything like that and had a TON of people asking her for the theme so that they could get nursery items. I'd rather throw the cute anchor lamp on there than answer "nautical nursery" a million times.

This! I have been going back and forth since I started my registry because I added a couple of nursery items. I felt really selfish for it. But in my mind, it's more of a reminder to get it if it's not gifted. Our friends and family are a bit off the wall and always go for the "awwe" factor more than things that are actually needed. I seriously never thought that starting a registry would be so difficult!

I honestly feel that you should regsiter for whatever baby/ nursery/ boob items you want! People don't have to buy them. But I think it should be some way baby related.

  • I'm still not familiar with "registry completion discounts"?

When I started my registry in the store, I was given a gift bag. But that's it. What types of discounts are we talking about and how do you get them?

Don't waste your money. You can drink wine and breastfeed without needing to test your milk. If you're fine to drive, you're fine to breastfeed. If you're not, just wait til you are. No real need to pump and dump. There's lots of literature out there on this topic.

You will get the coupon closer to your due date or sometime after the date listed for your baby shower.

The store you register with might email you the coupons or mail to you for you to use. Because of this alot of people will make a registry with a sooner due date then they really have just to get the coupons so they can buy the items themselves.

  • 1) I did not know about this completion discount thing at BRU and now I'm very excited :)
    2) I'm agreeing with register for what you think you need for baby regardless of price. As I did for my wedding registry, I will make sure to have items in all price ranges but this one will be more of a shopping list so I can keep track of all of the stuff I've researched. If people don't think I need the item then they won't buy it. I don't have the energy to worry about what people are thinking about my registry.
    3) Now I have a question: I am going to register at BRU and Target because there are more Targets in my area and I don't want anyone to have to drive a long way if they are feeling generous enough to get us a gift. So do I register for the same things on both registries and just return the duplicate items? Thanks in advance :)

I would only register the item if its alsi avaible to bu online if youre worried about distance.
That way for people far away they can just buy it thatway and you not worry about making returns.
