Things that you should NOT add to your registry.

Maybe I'm being slightly judgemental, but I've just finished shopping from a friend's registry and I must admit to side eyeing a couple of things. Maybe it's just me but I really don't think that it's appropriate to register for a nursing bra and breast pads.

What things do you consider inappropriate to add to a registry?

  • I was uncomfortable registering for things for my boobs, but is can see why people would. The amount of breast pads I went through was astounding.

  • I only added things I would want others to buy for me until after my shower with DS. After the shower the registry wad just a shopping list. A lot of people make a shopping list type registry before the shower though.

  • If it's baby related I say go for it! I'm the last in my group to have a baby so they have seen and used alllll that stuff before. No need to be squeamish!
  • To each their own. I just think it odd to ask someone to buy a bra for you.

  • Personally I'm not comfortable adding them, but don't side eye it. I side eye the people that put nursery decor or non baby related things. Also, garbage cans. Just because someone doesn't want a diaper genie or equivalent doesn't mean they should register for a garbage can.
  • Most people I know put the theme in the comments.
  • Can't remember which board I read it on but the Duggar girl that is pg registered for pop. Strange but I would expect that from them :)

  • I saw that on the BSB! (Is anyone surprised I hang out there lol.)
  • I think anything baby related is fair game. I'm not having a shower though so I guess it's a little different no one will be looking at mine so putting nipple cream and breast pads on my didn't feel weird. I guess it all just depends on individual comfort level. I would judge the hell out of someone who registered for non baby things though.

  • I know a girl who registered for lamps. Not the kind that would go in a nursery, but oddly enough, they matched her bedroom perfectly! ;)

I say anything baby related is fair game. I wouldn't put nursing bras on my registry because that is a bit too personal. But a breast pump and pads are alright IMO.

  • I personally think adding the nursing stuff gives people an idea that you plan to nurse.

  • My cousin registered for a potty chair. Idk, I thought that was a little strange! The baby wouldn't use it for probably 2 years! But to each their own I guess! I agree that breast pads/pumps/creams are all ok, but I won't be registering for a nursing bra or tank tops!!
  • NO List:
-Lots of clothes!  I wouldn't side-eye, but from experience, people will buy clothes anyways so register for things.  Plus clothes tend to be store-specific.

-Toddler stuff.  No official etiquette, but I think cut-off for a baby registry should be 12 months old.

-Non-baby related stuff: xbox, food, non-nursery furniture

I'm ok with breast pads, cream, milk bags, pump parts.  It helps to make the idea of breastfeeding less taboo for folks.

  • 2 convertible car seats and bases, disposable bibs, mostly duplicates of the same thing at multiple places.
  • I think all nursing stuff is fair game. If you can register for bibs and bottles then why not nipple cream and pads!?
  • The only time I side eye multiples is when I know it's so grandma can have her own crib/jumper/whatever else.
  • Wowwwww. Register for what you want for the baby. We had friends and family that bought some of our furniture and nursing pads, what wasn't purchased we bought using the completion discount for our 1st child. Carseats are a-ok. No one is thinking about your boobs except you. Relax and register for what you need.

  • I've only ever side eyed a registry once and that was because the woman let me know she was just registering for expensive stuff so other people would buy it because she never would. No product research, no definite knowledge of this is the product for my child, only how much does it cost.

  • Register for anything and everything in my opinion. I put my crib and furniture on there because I knew people already offered to buy it for us so they could know which stuff to get...?

My least favorite question of ALL TIME was when my DH's aunt missed my shower and asked me what I wanted off the registry. UH isn't that the point of a registry?? You buy what your comfortable buying in your price range or pick something/nothing else. So I picked something around what she spent at my bridal shower and less than a week after ds was born she was throwing around how she HAD to buy us an expensive high chair. We wrote her a check for the high chair in her thank you note and haven't spoken to her since.

Tl:dr people are weird when it comes to registries... put whatever makes you happy on there. :)

Who gives a fuck? Will the baby use it? Then it's fine.

By that philosophy, anything the child will ever use is acceptable. The point of a shower is to shower the mother to be with gifts and love; not stock up the family for everything the child will need during his/her entire life.

Ive actually been advised multiple times to register for all stages of baby/toddlers. I dont think Sugah was saying register for items for elementary school kids. But its for the baby (and by baby most people refer to 2 and under) why not?

  • REGISTER FOR ALL THE THINGS!

But seriously though, if it's what you need for baby, nursing, or pregnancy at all; add it to the list. Most of the people shopping your list will probably have had kids of their own and know what to expect to see on a registry. Now, me personally, I would never add super expensive items to my registry just for the sake of them being super expensive and my baby absolutely must be given the best of the best. To me, that's just encouraging "silver spoon" syndrome for when the child gets older and expects to be given top shelf everything. But again, that's just me personally. As OP said in a response to this thread, "to each their own."

I heart disposable bibs. For restaurant dining, they are a must. That is all.

  • I personally won't put the breast pads etc on the registry but my boobs are already too much conversation. I don't need anymore.

As far as the furniture, I don't expect people to get it but I want to have it on there to add to the bonus of the babies r us registry. Also, It has been hinted to me that others may want to get one of the pieces of furniture for us. (I.e. My office). It is not expected but it gives the option.

But I'm with others register for whatever ya want. It's your registry.

  • I agree with that, @jaztastic‌. I say register for it if it's what you know you want and need for you and your baby. I think buying for a baby takes some level of effort and research based on your needs and limitations.

  • I registered for expensive furniture, nipple cream, nipple butter, and some toddler items. I agree if it's for the baby, then why the F not? I can understand people may be uncomfortable opening nipple shields or other personal type items at a shower, but in my case I don't feel that way.
I put items of all price ranges, etc. My cousin registered for nursing bras and post baby shapewear. It wasn't what I wanted to buy for her, so I didn't, but I also don't care that she registered for it.
I was hoping this thread would be more STMs giving advice on crap they didn't feel was necessary or maybe we could go without.

  • Fair enough on the for the baby not school age children. However, IMO, it is tacky to register for a crib so grandparents can have a crib (or whatever else), since a shower is for the mom not the family. I have always heard to register for the first year, within reason. (Ex: If you're going to use an infant seat don't register for a convertible seat, but that is more because it may cut down on the life of the convertible seat.)

I agree with jaztastic that expensive is in the eye of the beholder. To me, dropping $200 on a wrap for baby wearing isn't expensive; to someone else it is. However, if the parents wouldn't buy it, it shouldn't be on the registry.

I was waiting to see if someone would mention this. My friend registered for an Xbox, I think as a goof? They sell them at Babies R Us, but I am sure they didn't expect anyone to buy it for them -- lots of jokes at the shower though about "oh, do we think this one's going to be the Xbox... oh, darn, it's this awesome (insert baby gift) instead."
