  • It makes a little more sense when @amy052006‌ explained it more. It still makes me sad that there's such a huge gap like that in countries, and no one has (and by no one, mainly @pevila‌ because I haven't met lot of people from different countries) the interest in trying to bridge the gap whatsoever.

I'm not naive enough to think everyone should be buddies, and fart out rainbows, all while sitting around a campfire singing kum-by-yah. It would be nice to see them treat the people that their paying to watch their kids like human beings and not just robots that shall not be seen or spoken.

I went to the store and waited 23 minutes well it took 23 minutes from the time I got in line to the time I walked out of the store. The line for those who didn't preorder was around the building.

  • I'm really freaking irritated I didn't know I would get my phone faster if I ordered from Apple instead of through AT&T. I could have had my phone today. It's not even scheduled to ship until the 31st of October.

It depends on when you ordered. Even at noon on the day ordering opened apple was shipping 6 weeks out.

I ordered through AT&T and got mine today. It was dependent on when you ordered. I got up at 2am the day it came out. :)
  • DD has never worn jeans. And I am dreading the day she wants to. She doesn't even own any so there's no chance of her picking them out in the closet or something. That should buy me a couple years, right? Right?!

Probably not. She's all ready really opinionated about her clothes. I should post a video of her picking out socks in the morning.

  • @rosesandpetals‌ why not jeans? And to Amy's comment. Yes, that is very prevalent in some societies. Some of our dearest friends live in Indonesia and have a housekeeper and grew up with a nanny. That said, their family...in THEIR house, the "help" is like family and they all eat together and are welcomed. It's certainly not the cultural norm...but it never will be if no one tries, ya know?
I just think she looks so cute in her dresses and jumpers and whatnot. Jeans are fine for playing but I am enjoying all the adorable, dressier outfits while I can.

My girls are only just barely interested in jeans now. They'll wear them occasionally but generally prefer cute dresses and leggings still! So even once she wants jeans it'll be a good long time before it's all she wears!

H and I got ours today too. He got up at 3am to order the day you could pre-order. We went to the Apple Store and waited maybe 30 minutes. Those who didn't preorder started lining up at 10pm last night and the line was ridiculously long this morning when we went to pick ours up.

I'm not quoting you but I'm responding to you Amy:

There's definitely something to what you're saying. But 1) just because something is the status quo in a culture, doesn't mean people are justified in turning a blind eye. Sometimes cultural relativism can only take you so far and some things are just fucked up. Yes, it might make the nanny uncomfortable to chat with Pevila, but let that be on her. I agree that it feels kind of off for Americans to get on her for this, but frankly, any person I'd want to be friends with from any country would just take a different approach to the situation. And supervising the help playing with the kids? That's just weird.

     2) Having been a SAHM in NYC, I can tell you that 99% of nannies are NOT college students or gap year students or whatever. There is a very real class (and frankly, race) divide there, as much as the employers try to gloss over it. Generally speaking, nannies don't hang out with moms at the play ground. I mean, there are definitely exceptions, but not many. So I don't think this is really coming from a place of American superiority... and if it is, well it's a mistaken premise. Because I think many people would agree with Kate and others that it'd be weird to have someone else's nanny come hang out at your house. And I might agree. It all depends on context.

I think if I were Pevila, I'd have suggested a park play date with the nanny. Then you could feel out the situation with the nanny, just like with a parent. I wouldn't invite a random person to my house without meeting them first either.

Sorry, sick kid screaming in my ear. I think my thoughts are rather jumbled. Ack. And maybe contradictory...
I am so glad I'm not the only one who noticed the nanny culture in NYC. It was bizarre to me. Nannies would talk to each other, but would not talk to moms (obviously there are exceptions). And they were absolutely not college students or young adults feeling out the world. That part definitely isn't limited to other countries.

OK, I'm back from a myriad of errands and picking up where I left off.

I teach reading in a public school, what does that make me?
You don't need to be supervised at play dates but she's still sending the maid.

Aren't you glad you worked for that master's degree? Really takes the pressure off.
