The Great Formula Feeding Thread

Re: The Great Formula Feeding Thread

  • POOP QUESTION!

So from all my googling a constipated baby would have hard, formed poop like pellets. DD has had a couple of those since yesterday but they weren't exactly hard.. I could squish them down into the diaper, she's not struggling any more than usual and her stomach is not hard. I've been trying to give her some breast milk (still pumping but not getting much) in addition to the formula but it hasn't loosened anything up yet. Plenty of wet diapers. I know it's normal for them to go days without really pooping but she is usually at the least a once a day-er.

Have any of your LO's had these pellets and did they resolve or your went to the pedi. I'm trying to decide what to do since it's Friday and I might need to take her into the the dr before the weekend. This happened once before but I had given her breastmilk and it resolved. Thanks!

  • My LO has that issue, but he's on soy so his being constipated is expected. I told the dr at his 2 month checkup about it and said to try a little bit of prune juice. And if that doesn't help like a tbsp of karo syrup. That has helped loosen the stools but they are still on the harder side. Hope this helps!

Thank you! My LO is on soy as well! I'm hoping to try to switch to a sensitive formula after his 2month appt! Makes me feel better!

  • I'm sure this has been asked before, so sorry in advance. Can anyone recommend a generic formula? Currently feeding Enfamil newborn but with LO's random growth spurts and ability to chug ridiculous amounts in a sitting, it's gonna start breaking the bank.
  • @Dawn5481‌ We use the Up & Up brand from Target. We've also used the the Parent's Choice brand from Wal-Mart. Both seem to work well for DD and are less expensive for more product.

I highly recommend checking out amazon prime subscription delivery. if u get 5 items auto shipped monthly u save 20 %. we get enfamil gentlease and the price works out to 45 % less than target!
  • We've used up & up formula for both boys and have been very happy with it!

  • We use the Costco brand. It is only $17 and in a huge container. She is doing really well on it. Hardly ever spits up anymore.
  • @Dawn5481‌ we use the SAMs Club brand of Gentlease. It winds up making each ounce only 52 cents. LO tolerates it well. And bonus-they ship it for free if you order online.

I just bought this today to give it a try! Twice as much for the same price as the Enfamil. Thanks everyone!
  • I have a variety and like them all for different reasons.

Playtex nursers, easy to clean with the inserts, seems like she doesn't suck in excess air, good for on the go

Tommee tippee, my daughter loves the wide nipples and the bottles come in different colors which is fun

Avent, heavy duty nipples last along time

Dr. Browns and Breastflow, annoying with all the parts and didn't stop how much air she sucked in

Lansinoh momma, overall good bottle, heavy duty nipple
  • *11 keeps me satisfied!
  • I am so frustrated. I just moved back to the US after being in the UK for a few years and had my baby there. He loved Aptamil but they don't sell that here. We are trying to get some mailed to us but it will take a while. We've tried a few different types and DS just doesn't seem to like them and I feel like a terrible mom. :-( I think I've tried two different types of Enfamil (regular and sensitive). For the sensitive, we bought the ready-made bottles to see if he liked it, rather than buy a whole can of powder. It just seems so syrupy and sweet! Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm going crazy here and am missing Aptamil :-(

  • @queenieM‌ my DD wouldn't drink the ready to feed Enfamil Gentlease but drinks the powdered one without a problem. She would literally scream when we tried to give her ready to feed.

  • okie dokie then, I shall try some other powdered brands.  Are the ready made versions over here just not good? in the UK every brand has a ready made version and they are the same quality.

  • I think it just depends on the baby/formula. DD drank ready to feed Similac no problem but not the Enfamil.

  • @queenieM‌ DHs family is from the UK. His sister used to give her daughter Aptamil. When they moved to the US they tried Enfamil because it sounded similar. But they had the same issue. They ended up trying Similac advanced and his niece had no problem. His family said Similac is pretty similar to Aptamil. Similac also makes a sensitive/gentle version. Maybe that's worth a try?

Yes! We actually just tried this a few days ago and he seems to be doing well with it! Someone had mentioned this a while back in this thread and I just remembered it.

@bbcolt78 DD uses soy, since day 2 in the hospital (they said she might be allergic to milk protein), I felt that the switched her really soon but honestly, she does amazing on it, no spit ups.. lots of gas but she gets it out and it never bothers her. I was on the fence about keeping her on it but my pedi assured me there are plenty healthy children who use soy based formula and there really aren't any long term studies on the effects of soy. ETA: she did get constipated 2x (hard, formed poop) and the pedi said if it is something that persists then we will have to switch her off.. but it doesn't seem like it's an on going thing.. knock on wood.

Question for those of you that have LOs STTN.. DD just started sleeping through the night for about a week now, which I know is subject to change at any time. For us STTN is last feed between 8-9pm.. wakes up here and there for the paci, and up for the next feed between 6-7am. She is going 4hrs between feeds during the day, so she is actually only eating 4x a day now, which is crazy to me.. I've had to increase the amount of each feeding to 6-6.5oz and then usually her first and last feeding are 7oz. I feel like this is so much for each feeding but she takes it all, never spits up.. and even at those amounts I'm not sure if her total (about 26oz) is enough for her? Any insight?? DD is 11weeks and weighs 13lbs

I didn't know she was on soy too. That's good to know. I hate the smell of soy but dd seems happier and really spits up less.

If it helps... My lo eats between 5-6 ounces every 3 hours. Sometimes she will take only 2 oz. she averages 20-26 ounces a day. At night... Bed at 6:30-7:00pm. Dream feed 10pm about 3oz but the bottle has 6. Then, she can go Til four but wakes around 2am for paci. Last night she took 6oz at 2am! Paci was not good enough!

@shortstack930‌ we just tried the next size up when he was about a month old. We tried it because he seemed frustrated. The first time he wasn't ready for it and seemed pained and spit up more so we gave it a week and tried again and he was good with it. We are going to try going up to the size 3's pretty soon. He's such a ravenous baby and seems to get frustrated with the bottle sometimes.

DD acted a fool last week. She would barely eat and play with the nipple on the bottle. The next minute she became super pissed and was trying to squirm away. It suddenly reminded me that DD #1 did the exact same thing and it was time to switch nipple flow. We switched to level 2 at 13 weeks. Dr. Brown's bottles, easy transition. No choking or anything.

  • My baby takes about 45 minutes to eat 5oz. It drives me crazy. It seems like she just let's the milk drip out. She doesn't seem frustrated or anything. Would you take that as a sign to move up to the next size?
  • My LO is on the size 3 nipples, she's on alimentum and zantac, and eats 3-5 ounces every 2-3 hours. Her total is about 30-35 oz a day now

Yep, I switched to size 2 nipple, it takes LO about 15 minutes to eat 8 oz 4-5times a day, with 3-6 hours between.
