    FF from the start here!

At 5 days PP we're doing between 2-3 oz. every 3-4 hours. Using Dr. Browns bottles and really liking them.

3 weeks PP, and we're FFing from the start. LO takes 3oz every 2-3 hours during the day, and stretching it out at night to 4-5, thank you baby!! We use the Avent natural bottles. I love them! Decided to FF from the get go after my horrible experience with trying BF my first son. Trying to (un)successfully BF coupled with PP made the transition to formula more necessary than anything else. Since we've starting using formula from the beginning with this baby, we've been a very happy and somewhat rested household.

  • Thank you for starting this thread. We started FF when Cam got jaundice and had to eat every 2 hours. My colostrum hadn't come in at that time so he was miserable and starving. Once we introduced formula and the bottle, he lost interest in BF.

I pumped 3 days postpartum around the clock for the first two weeks. Only produced 1.5oz per boob during the first pump of the day. Every session afterward didn't get much at all. Now we are just FF and he's 3 weeks old. Doing well! We switched him to enfamil gentlease and his gas and tummy troubles have reduced significantly. We use the Playtex drop in bottles and we love them. We have doctor brown bottles but haven't used them yet.

Glad to know I'm not the only one FF and still having to feed him every 2 hours! He's been asleep now for almost three hours thankfully!

He hasn't been burping well the past few days. Any suggestions for best positions to get baby to burp?

Also, how are your baby's poops looking?

  • Team FF! Will update more when it's not the middle if the night.

  • My colostrum was there and awesome. Micah was in the NICU and I was pumping hardcore and DH would swab my boobs and take to him to rub on his gums. I was committed. And so was poor DH, my little gopher.

Like @samounthak‌, once I switched over to milk, if I pumped every 3hrs, I would get less than an ounce total. If I spread a little, I would get a little more. But I never got the engorgement or anything. Micah hated BF-ing. It would make him sob. I quit pumping altogether at around week 4-5.

The hospital drs had us on Enfacare 22cal and my ped told me to stick with it until the 2mo visit (2 more weeks). But last night we switched to Gentlease and it's made a huge difference in his gas pains. I would mix the Enfacare in the bottle and by the time I went to feed him, 3oz was 6oz from all the foam. There's zero foam when I mix the Gentlease. That alone is probably helping his tummy troubles problems.

We tried the tommee tippees when I was trying to BF and much like BF-ing, he hated them. He was well experienced with the tiny gerber nipples on the disposable 2oz bottles from the hospital so we used those until pretty recently. Dr Browns is most similar to the gerber, so we made a smooth transition to those.

    Sorry for the novel.

    TL;DR - Dr Browns + Enfamil Gentlease.

  • DD is just 6 days old and we are doing mostly formula but I'm still pumping. She's a very hungry and demanding baby. Tried BF while at the hospital but it wasn't going well. And with 2u2 bottle feeding makes more sense.
We're using the Tommee tippie bottles and she likes them. Really hoping my milk supply can catch up though so I can continue to pump for her. The doc did say if you start out pumping it takes longer to meet their needs because it isn't the same suction her mouth would provide. But my DS was FF and I won't be sad if LO ends up 100% FF either.

    >Pregnancy Ticker>

  • We are FF with some breast milk maybe twice a day. DD was formula fed from the start because of being in NICU, so getting her to take the boob was hard. She wants instant gratification that I can't provide while BF (it's a slow process for me to start producing) and being the stubborn thing she is, pushes me away. Tried SO many times using all kinds of tricks- no luck. So now I pump and give her what I can ( I seem to have a low supply too- nothing I do increases it). I still try to put her on the boob- my pedi doesn't want me to give up yet.

DD is almost a month, so she is taking 3.5 oz every 3-4 hours during the day. She takes the same amount at night, and her stretches between feedings range from 3-6 hours.

We switched from Similac Advanced to Enfamil Gentlease and that really helped with her gas.
  • FF from the start. We are using born free bottles. Loved them with our first baby however this little tends to drink too fast and seems to be gets tons of gas. I think we need to switch bottles. We received a sample lansinoh momma bottles that she does very well with. We have switched formulas from similac advanced to similac sensitive which made little difference. We are now using enfamil gentle ease and still haven't noticed a change in her gas pains. Hoping new bottles will help.

Lo takes about 2 1/2 to 3 oz every 3-4 hours.

We FF from the start. I tried, unsuccessfully for several months to BF DD, and when it didn't work out, I felt like I had wasted so much time that I could have been bonding with her, because I was so stressed about her eating.
Because this will be our last baby, I really wanted to enjoy every second from the beginning, so we went straight to FF. I've dealt with a little judgyness, mostly a pedi we saw yesterday who said "So is there any reason that you chose not to at least OFFER the breast?" Blah.
Oh well, I am happy with our decision. We are using the Target Up&Up brand, which has the same nutrition as Similac. Just a heads up to the girls using similac, we used it with DD, and they quickly stop sending checks, and their formula only gets more expensive.
For bottles we are using Dr. Brown's wideneck bottles, and after a few days, he's gotten used to them.

  • We've been FF from the beginning & using Playtex bottles with drop in liners. We usually just buy the Target brand liners. DD is part of a research program at the hospital where she was born & is on one of two of their research formulas. We know it's Enfamil but we don't know what kind. The research will last approximately four months & we take her once per month back to the hospital to be measured, weighed & stock up on more formula. It's a HUGE blessing to us & she seems to be thriving. I only tried to nurse her once at the hospital but I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be able to because it never worked out with DS.

To the PP who was asking about burping - someone on the Night Crew thread suggested we slow feedings down by doing a little feeding, burp break, then feed more, then burp break. I've started breaking DD's feedings into 3's. Eat, burp, eat, burp, eat burp. The best position I've found is sitting her in my lap, holding her chin with my hand for support & patting her back. Sitting her up seems to put pressure on her tummy to burp it out. I don't have nearly as much luck with her on my shoulder. She just falls asleep.

    Jerk.  [-X

The resident pedi at the hospital where DD was born said, "I see you haven't breast fed at all yesterday." I was ready to hand over DD & say, "Well you give it a shot since it's so easy." But he was bringing it up so he could talk to us about the formula research program he wanted us to be a part of. Lol. But yeah, I've got NO patience for idiots who want to criticize us FF or cloth diapering our baby.

Ugh! That just pisses me off for you! Why why why does anyone need to judge anyone else on how a baby is fed, much less a pedi?

I'm glad you are happy with your decision and didn't let it get you down.

I had an LC make a similar comment and I straight up ugly cried and felt like a POS parent for a little bit. And then we went to DDs first check up and she was nearly back to her birth weight and thriving. Problem solved.

With DS1 I started supplementing with formula around 7 months. I am prepared to do that again (or sooner if necessary). My question is what is so different about newborn formula? I have 2 canisters of Enfamil Newborn formula. Would it be ok to hold on to those and use when DS2 older, like 6 months or so?

    11.2011 - DS1

    02.2013 - loss at 6 wks

    06.2014 - DS2

    10.2015 - loss at 12 wks

    03.2017 - DD

  • Count me in. My son has no idea what to do with a boob, gets frustrated and screams and nothing I do calms him down. I have low supply but I pump and give him whatever I can but its mostly formula that he eats.

I've cried more about my stupid boobs in the past 2 weeks than I have about anything in the past 5 years. I'm on fenugreek. I am doing what the doctor says and I still can't get more than an ounce and a half total. And that's the "big" morning session.

I'm really glad someone started this thread.

We are using similac and we just bought similac sensitive and some gas drops because it seems he is having painful gas. We are using 4 different types of bottles and he doesn't prefer (Nuk, Agent, breast pump tubes with nipples and Gerber cheapies).

Who else thinks formula poop smells worse than adult poop?

We are mostly formula at this point but I'm still pumping what I can.

I am having lots of guilt about failing at breast feeding for the third time because this lo actually latched well at the hospital, then he had blood sugar issues and they had me give formula. Since then, he is too impatient and won't feed at the breast unless I use a shield (but even then he still gets lazy).

My supply is low and what I am pumping is only a small total of what he gets all day. I should probably throw in the towel, but I am having too many emotions about it right now to finally just give in

We use up and up compared to similac advanced but may change due to some constipation issues.

We use a variety of bottles (drop ins, medela, similac, and avent). He is drinking 3oz every 3-3.5 hours.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • @bkcgraham We use Enfamil from the start with both kids. Similac is rumored to be hard on the stomach. Our hospital provided Enfamil then we bought some for home also.

  • A little BM early on here but all FF now. For both this boy and my older son we use Dr Brown's and Kirkland formula (Costco brand). Love it, especially at 1/3 the price of Enfamil. We stir the bottles to create fewer bubbles and less gas.

  • Another FFer here! We do about 50% breast milk from the pump and the rest formula. We try and BF 2x a day, but DS usually always needs to follow up with some formula after. I think our problems are a combination of low supply and DS being a lazy eater. Last check up he finally gained enough weight, so I am happy with my decision to introduce formula.

We are using similac sensitive and plan to switch to a generic after this canister. He seems to do ok with it, but is having more gas and spit ups than with breast milk. For bottles we use Dr. Browns and MAM wide necks. He eats every 3 hours and usually 3-4 oz.
  • FF here too. I'm soooo glad that this thread started cus the breastfeeding thread bummed me out quite a bit. I love seeing more moms FFing so I don't feel so alone. We are using Avent bottles and we have Dr Browns as well but the flow is faster on them so he chokes more. He eats 3 to 4 oz every 3 hours. We are on Similac Soy. Had some diarreah issues on the Similac Advance and now that we are on Soy it has helped a lot. My older son was on Soy also and finally outgrew his lactose intolerance by the age of 2. Holy moly, his poops make me gag! On breast milk they were yellow and seedy. And now on formula they are green watery explosive bombs..!

  • I've had 3 children and with all of mine I never felt the need to bf. I have no problem with people bf but for me personally it's not something I ever wanted to do!!
My daughter is doing great on formula (like my other two did) she is on 2-3oz every 2 hours. She never lost any of her birth weight and when she was weighed last she was 7lb 3oz (born 6lb 15oz). Just got to work on these two hourly feeds they are killing me lol!!!!
  • We are using Avent bottles and SAM's brand formula. Both are working well for us.

Has anyone been switching between formula brands? We have so many samples of Similac and Enfamil but I don't want to use them if it's going to upset LO's tummy.

  • Alexander was given donor breast milk in the NICU until 34 weeks. I tried pumping for a month... every 3 hours, around the clock. I took fenugreek, milk thistle, drank mother's milk tea and even had an rx for reglan. The most I would EVER get (and only from my left boob) was 5mL. Yep, mililiters. I felt so horrible that I couldn't produce milk because all I heard in the NICU was how helpful my milk would be for my son.

Anyways, Alexander has been on a higher calorie recipie of Similac neosure. We use Dr. Browns and he takes 2-3oz every 2-3 hours. He is gaining weight wonderfully, but is super gassy alllllllll the time. I have to give him gas drops after every bottle. He also gets 1 bottle a day of half apple juice and half water to help keep him from getting constipated.

On a side note, I told all this to the doctors that were here when we got admitted to the hospital last night and they only ordered the gas drops for every other bottle. After 3 hours of a screaming baby I had DH bring our drops from home.

Really was committed to breastfeeding this time. Did fenugreek, pumping after feeding, nipple shield, lactation cookies, dark beers -- and my supply would not increase. I was getting 25 - 30 ml at the height of my production.

It was stressing me out and I decided that I was fine with FF again. TBH the reason I wanted to do it was to 1. Save money 2. Try and lose weight faster.

    Dr Brown's bottles.

Variety of formulas right now -- so far DS2 is responding well to it. I have a stockpile of formula, because you know I like to hoard stuff.

However, I have found that Up&Up Brand has been the cheapest from DS1 (nearly twice the formula for cheaper than the advertised price what Enfamil or Similac goes for -- you can coupon this down with manufacturer coupons, store coupons, and stack with checks if they will let you, but it still isn't as good of a deal as the store brand). This time I am working my way through formula samples (I signed up every family member in a 25 mile radius from me and pick up free & unopened samples from those on facebook trade sites or my neighborhood community facebook group if I am first to respond).

The formula is going faster than I thought, so I'm holding my breath that it gets us through at least the first few months or until Target runs another good deal like $20 off of $100.

I did enjoy the time with my son BF, so I miss that a little bit. However, I'm comfortable with my decision.

I did bring my own. DH and I were very disappointed in the hospital and I told them so. No info anywhere on how much formula to offer a newborn. Most if the nurses didn't have an answer. My baby would only drink 2ml, which is nothing, until a night nurse taught her how to suck. Be prepared, bring formula and a book to refer to. Get your DH ready to answer to lactation and everyone else. They can be very pushy and it will make you feel guilty. Though I'm a STM, they still weren't easy on me.

  • @bkcgraham‌ when both lo's were born the hospital provided us with both. Your ob's office or hospital should be able to give you info on whether or not they provide formula. Most hospital do provide it though. Ours even sent us home with tons of the little sample bottles as well.
  • My hospital provided formula although I had to ask for it after he was 2 hours old, they assumed I was BF and didn't need help getting LO latched. They offer similac and I had to request enfamil. My hospital was great because I didn't get pressure or guilt about feeding LO a bottle. I would definitely ask ahead.

  • Formula feeding due to PPD/A. I was completely miserable. On my breaking day, I had clogged ducts, I was in pain, dd was crying because she wasn't getting enough and I was stressed. I was stressed to the point it was affecting my supply. I had done everything I could. Pumping, feeding through the pain.. I wasn't sleeping or eating. My LC gave me her cell number and I was constantly on the phone with her, crying and hyperventilating because I was trying so hard. She even called me at my breaking point- while she was on vacation- and she told me I had PPD and I needed to sleep. She said if it was so stressful for me, that formula might be better. But she told me for that moment, take a shower, take a nap, and to BF if I wanted to, formula feed if I wanted to. I cried for SIX HOURS following that talk. Saw my DDs doctor the next day who firmly suggested exclusive formula feeding. My husband and my doctor agreed. So I reluctantly did. Now I'm on antidepressants and really can't. Drying up the milk supply felt like hell. Giving her the first bottle felt like hell. I still hate formula feeding. But she is gaining weight and is happy...

I'm sorry you feel this way. It's really, really tough to switch, especially if you tried to BF and it didn't work out. The hormones do not help one bit.

When I couldn't BF my first due to low supply, I cried and cried. LC finally told me that I had to switch to formula. Looking back, I feel much better and wish I hadn't put so much pressure on myself. With this baby I just skipped BF all together to keep myself from that experience again.

I hope that you can look back in a month and feel good about your decision. It's tough.
