Anyone going to get flu shots and/or whooping cough vaccinations in the next few months? I never ever get flu shots and I don't want to start now.... Curious if anyone has any insight?
I'm on the fence about the flu shot because I always have a bad reaction to it, but I'll probably get any other recommended vaccinations. We actually just had a conversation about this yesterday, you can check out the thread here: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12442722/flu-shot
@Samiamagirl Have you tried the mist kind instead of the shot? Not sure if its available but that's another option you could look into if you wanted it but have a bad reaction to the shot. Not sure if you will still have the same reaction of course. Not in any kind of medical field over here
@icajesica82 - I actually never heard about the nasal mist until someone mentioned it on that last thread. I don't know if you're allowed to get it when you're pregnant (sounds like they have a specific shot for pregnant women) but I may try it after baby comes.

The mist isn't approved for pregnant women. It has live virus in it.
I'm allergic to the Flu vaccine so I can't get it but anyone that can should since I and others like me rely on everyone else getting vaccinated and not passing around the disease.
"This research suggests that although individuals immunized with an acellular pertussis vaccine may be protected from disease, they may still become infected with the bacteria without always getting sick and are able to spread infection to others, including young infants who are susceptible to pertussis disease."
The tdap while pregnant makes me nervous. It Made my friend go into labor (they were able to stop it) at 29 weeks. Gave her ab extremely high fever and she ended up go to er. The ppl at er are the ones who told her she was in labor.
Anyway I just recently got the tdap about two years ago. Would They want me to get another?
Edit: I just looked. ...my tdap isn't due until 2020, I guess I got it 4 years ago, not 2.
I got the tdap 4 years ago, I don't think I will need it again. I'm still on the fence about the flu shot. I have never received one but I understand your immune system is suppressed while pregnant. Does anyone have any literature (websites) that show the pros and cons?
I understand it's still recommended to get but this new study does make me a little nervous ....

My takeaway there is that if you can get the vaccine and pass some immunity onto your unborn babe, it's even more important to do so, because herd immunity may not protect them because the virus can be spread even by people who are vaccinated. I don't see why that article would mean that anyone shouldn't get the vaccine, quite the opposite.
I can not get the flu vaccine because I carry the genetic marker for Guillain Barre Syndrome.
My dad had Guillain Barre, triggered by a flu shot. Does the gene run in the family? Guess I need to talk to my doctor about this, and possibly get tested.

I have seen so many horror stories of infants getting whooping cough, yet the mother was vaccinated while pregnant....I'm not say people shouldnt get the vax, get it...but according to the FDA more research needs to be done!
Current recommendations are that all pregnant women get the TDap even if you are not actually due for it by normal guidelines. Getting the shot in your 3rd trimester can help protect the baby since they cannot get the vaccine so soon.
This has even changed from when DS was born when it was recommended to give to mom in the hospital after birth, which is what I did. Assuming this pregnancy sticks, I will get mine at 34 weeks, per my doctor. DH and anybody else who got it while I was pregnant last time will not need to repeat at this point.
I will also be getting the flu shot.

@CoPilot2012 I would talk to your doctor about that. If it's a live vaccine you can't get it I believe. All I know is you do not want to get chicken pox when pregnant. My husband has shingles now and the ER doc had me all freaked out but my RE had tested me already and I have the immunity.
I will be getting a flu shot after my first appointment next week. I just had a tetanus/diphtheria booster in July. I unfortunately am allergic to the pertussis vaccine so I am slightly worried about not being able to pass on immunity but I don't have a choice to get it. Herd immunity for the win (I hope!).
I've never bothered with a flu shot before. I know you can get them free all over the place. I just never felt the need. I didn't get one with my last pg. I'll probably just ask my doctor what he recommends.

Since when would a baby have a birth defect from the mother not getting a flu shot, let alone the mother miscarry? ) are you kidding? You're at a higher risk to miscarry if you get the flu, which 90 percent of the time people do after getting that shot.
When you get the shot you already have the virus in your system and once you're exposed to it you get sick. Which is the cause for 90 percent of people who got the shot and got the flu.
Mothers do NOT miscarry because they didn't get the shot. That's the silliest thing I've ever read. A mother who is vaccinated is more likey to miscarry than those who don't get shots. If you get the flu there's a risk obvi, it's not rocket science. But it's not because the mother chose not to get the shot, that crap isn't bulletproof. We're all still at risk. It's just up to whomever's immune system is strong enough to repel it.
Ha okay. Well I wasn't trying to tell anyone not to get it, you do what you want and I'll do what I want. People don't need to go around spreading crap around when they don't know what they are talking about was my point.

... Um wut? You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of how vaccines work and to be using invented statistics to support your opinions. If you don't want to get vaccinated, like, okay, cool, your choice to make, but please don't spread this kind of blatant misinformation. #-o
Ooook slaves, well I'm bored and not wasting my breathe(fingers in this case) on brainwashed minions. You do what you want and I'll do what I want. Do your research mamas. \:D/

Talk about spreading misinformation. The flu vaccine does not cause the flu. End of story.

how did they connect it to the shot? Correlation doesn't mean causation. Just curious if they somehow made a definitive connection.
I got the tdap when we first started trying. I can not get the flu vaccine because I carry the genetic marker for Guillain Barre Syndrome.
@irishtheatrechic how did you find that out? my MIL had Guillain Barre (and is still recovering) 4 years ago and it's one thing that stresses me out regarding my kids since I know there is a genetic marker ( I just don't know if they might have it).
Are there any other ones you can't have? I don't think she is supposed to get any more vaxxes ever because of it.

@jhonrud & @CTri17 from my limited understanding there are varying intensities of GBS. My so did your genetic marker means my risk of developing it is increased dramatically as well as the intensity once it hits. We discovered it after my cousin almost died from it after being vaccinated. Its been 10 years and she is still suffering effects.
I do know the marker is rare so just becaise a family member had it doesn't mean you do. You can also develop it without any marker at all.
However since I am trained as a teacher and not a doctor I will end with my typical advice- If you are worried then please discuss it with someone FAR more knowledgable than I, preferably one with a medical degree. I only play a dr online
so did you just have your dr run a genetic test?

Did you guys ever notice that the people with the craziest, least grounded in reality views on medicine always end their arguments with "Do the research"?
Yuuup. I'm a higher level sciences student (so "doing my research" involves lab coats and literature searches) and I find it hilarious when people who clearly don't understand the least bit about science go off about "doing your research."
I have. Anyone who has actually read the primary research *and understood it* would have a very hard time making claims like that.

As a pediatrician I will get all of my vaccines gladly. ) I've saw the swine flu put pregnant women in the icu & worse. Not taking any chances. I've never heard of a genetic marker for GBS.... :-/ but I'm no neurologist.
The flu shot is now mandatory at my work, so yes I will be getting it. I usually don't get it but did with my two previous pregnancies. Not sure about the DTaP yet. I will if my OB recommends to.
Hi everyone! I am an RN and I staff flu clinics on the side. All of our training vids mention single-dose vial flu shots as recommended for pregnant women as opposed to the Multi dose vials. The single dose vials do not contain thimerosol (the controversial mercury additive). Also, I do think the nasal spray is contraindicated due to it being the live attenuated virus. Hope this helps, of course follow doctors orders
