Worst Name Suggestions

**DISCLAIMER**  No one is hating on these names, they simply aren't the right names for us which makes suggesting them silly.

After yesterday's "Dad suggestions" talk, I had a long conversation with my mom in which my nieces and siblings all joined in to pick baby names. I thought it would be fun to talk about the strangest, weirdest, worst baby names that have been suggested to us.

For me:
Navi - the annoying fairy in the Zelda Games
Saila - my niece made it up
Ariella - All I heard was areola, it's a beautiful name if you remove the extra la IMO
Sequoya - I don't know why they think I would use a tree name, that's not me
Aloe - So that I can later apply my child to wicked burns
Selphie - pronounced just like selfie and a character from the Final Fantasy series
Febix - I don't think that's a real name and I'm not sure why the "L" needed to be changed
Athos and Porthos - because my brother is Aramis and we should stick with the Three Musketeers theme

Anyone else want to join in? I have a feeling some of you guys have gotten some crazy suggestions.

Re: Worst Name Suggestions

  • Mine aren't that terrible or weird, but they did make me laugh:

Alejandrina: my brother insists on calling the baby this (guess what his name is)?
Xochipili: my dad's, as noted yesterday
Victoria: my mom's; my husband wants to know if my mom's stuck in the 70s.

(Note: I don't think Victoria's a horrible name. My mom wanted to name me Victoria, though, so my husband's question is valid.)

    That's it so far.
Awaiting our bundle of cute chaos.

  • Oh man...my brother suggested Ellie Mae.  All I can think is Beverly Hillbillies, so that is so not happening!  in his defense, our grandmother's name was Ellen Mae.  Those names just aren't my taste.

Before we knew the sex, my dad suggested Franklin Scott or Scott Eugene.  Mixing his name and my FIL.  But I don't like Franklin or Eugene (neither does DH) so that wasn't happening.  DH liked Bartholomew...I really hope he was kidding.

Like @jennhillhoite said, nothing wrong with these names, they just aren't for me.

  • @cookie0875, Eugene was one of the suggestions from my 9 year old brother. It's not a bad name but I'm not on board with it. Some of the other names that hit me as hard as these ones were Katrice, Anisia, Aleena, Lionel, Leon, Werner, Kenton and Robbie. All are good names but just NMS. I really feel like they weren't considering who the names were for at the time they started saying them.

Not that these are wacked out but my sister suggestion Easton and my brother suggested Ezekiel or Jackson...DH and I are really considering Jackson. I've been over to the BNB and I'll never go back! They must be sniffing glue or huffing paint other there.

  • We were recommended Elijah, Landon, Jasenia, Payton, and Eleanor. DH and I agreed and chose names as soon as we decided to have a baby so we really didn't need any ideas. Also, my dog's name is Payton so I thought that was weird someone even said that. Also, these names were not our style. They're lovely for other children, but we are doing family names :)

  • I have nothing to add because we weren't open to suggestions, always had our list of names solidified and we're tight lipped about them to keep the suggestions from coming, lol. So for now, the girls are known as KJ and Lee to most people...but I can tell you guys in another thread one of these days. ;-)

  • @jennhillhoite your family is coming up with some interesting ones!

@crystalw88 I really like Jackson for a boy even though it is becoming pretty popular, but DH nixed it because of Jax on Sons...a-hole...

@MrsRoy07 I so thought of Babysitters Club when I saw Melody too.

  • @cookie0875 the kids and kind-of-adults suggesting them are 4, 7, 9, 11, 19 and 23 and then my mom. They gave us a few good ones that we loved but the bad far outweighed the good.

  • We are naming our baby after family names and if it's a boy he will get my grandfather's middle name. His first name was Nemour and even he never went by that, he was always called N.J. I guess you can trust some Cajuns to keep it interesting.
  • These are great! Haha!

My mom blasted me with names last month abd I can't remember them all. Most were either already cousins so we didn't want to double dip the name. The worst of the lot was Bristol.

    SS's voted Maleficent or Cheeseburger.

Ahhh! When I see Ellie Mae that's all I can think of is this ancient Boston terrier that was a regular at our clinic. She was horribly blind from diabetic cataracts and she had this amazing "old lady" snarky, I'm the shit attitude. Loved that little old lady.
  • I loved yesterday's dad suggestions of Barfolomew...I love Space Balls. My grand father calls my cousin Marmaduke (a family name) - her real name is Cameron, but all I can think of is the comic about the great dane when I hear it. Surprisingly we haven't gotten any crazy suggestions that come to mind.

@nomnomasaur0426 I like Garrett as a boy name, it's on our current list of possibilities.

  • My MIL suggests every single pregnancy that we should name a girl either Lacy or Molly.  And I want to barf all over those names.

She also suggested Michaela as a name (DH's name is Michael, and his older brother's daughter's name is Kayla.... so... NO).

She tries to take credit for Marnie's name (which she had nothing to do with), and she absolutely hates Amanda's name.  Which puzzles me, because she seems to love names from the 80's.

The only name that Marnie has agreed to for this baby is Mabel.  We were throwing names out (whatever came to mind), and that name elicited the only yes.

If baby is a girl her name will be Aileen Mae, most likely Allie Mae for short so I can't hate on Ellie Mae. Although our name for a boy is pretty country, too. To each their own!
  • @nomnomasaur0426 - If my sister was a boy, she would have been Gareth.

(Sorry, but I never liked that name)

  • @nomnomasaur0426 a good friend named her daughter Claire and I LOVE it.  Definitely traditional, but not overused.

  • I haven't had any yet this time (other than my boys picking superhero names). But with my second my son wanted chief Bruno. We had read a bearenstein bear book with the police chief in it. He was convinced that would be his brothers name right up until he met him at the hospital.
  • Let's see...this is Dad's favorite game:
    Markabelle (his name is Mark)
Alaina Mae (apparently this was supposed to be my brother's name if he was a girl.  Alaina is nice, but Mae?)
    Frank or Flana
    Artimaus or Anika
    Sirius or Sienna

If only I had written them all down.  When we weren't sure what it was he was (obviously) on a matching first letter trend.  Now he just likes to come up with craziness.

  • I love the name Claire. Love love it. However its number 10 on the list of popular names for this year so far. Just making a note since you were steering away from popular names.

I also love traditional yet unpopular names. My name is Sarah and since i was born in the late 70s when apparently everyone else loved the name i am trying to steer away from something popular. I had 3 Sarah's in my highschool home room alone.

  • Everyone has different tastes in names. I love names and have always been sort of obsessed with baby names. DH and I are very very picky and we now have a short list of names that we like. Pretty much we have considered every conceivable, not made up, name on the planet. So sometimes is strikes me as odd that someone texts me some great epiphany they had...

My aunt text me out of the blue "Alyssa Lastname". That was the whole text like literally she was sitting there and thought "that's it!" I have read baby name books and am so into names, of course I would know if I were interested in Alyssa. It is not a bad name at all, just nothing at all that we want.

I also have family members who love trendy names. Things like Brayden, Kadence, Layla, etc. and they scrunch their faces and bite their tongues at our traditional choices. Oh wells, you can't please 'em all!
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • Oh realized I was cryptic with our choices in case anyone is interested. About 90% sure a boy will be August James or Elliott Sylvan. A girl will be Iris Faye or Ellen Sylvia. All middles are family names we really want to honor. The lead right now is August or Iris, but we are still looking and want to have a few options for boys and girls at the birth (team green!)
    BabyFetus Ticker
  • I love names that have special meaning! We are naming our baby after my father who passed away last fall. We aren't finding out the sex and my father's name was Ernest so we get some strange looks. But there are some girl alternatives to Ernest.

And it has always been a running joke in my family that my name should be Ernestine because I look and act just like my father.
  • Im lucky no one has suggested names to me at all!

Well thats partially true. When we were choosing bamea and choose Ripley for a girl we couldnt agree on,a middle name and DHs mom through out Jean which is her middle name. But we liked it.

  • Sedona for a girl
    Herman for a boy
    Sienna
    Rupert

....two of them remind me of cars and the other two remind me of older men haha they just aren't my style.  I haven't gotten any suggestions this go around because we are using the name we had picked if my last LO was a boy.

  • My favorites have come from kids in my preschool class: Watermelon Patch two, Charla, and my all time favorite- lipstick. Of course my family just suggests their names and DH is still adamant that if this is a boy it will be David Lee the 3rd.
    No thank you.

  • My brothers have suggested Megatron or Optimus Prime if its a boy. :-q

I once texted my mom something about my husband, and it auto corrected to Harris for some weird reason. We were keeping DS's name to ourselves until he was born, and she thought I slipped up on the secret. She was relieved to hear that wasn't the name. But after that, my family kept referring to DS as Harris as a joke. Haha.

  • My sister suggested Phoenix I've only heard it once and the guy was 6'4 and 200 lbs so I don't know if I could name my tiny little daughter that.
  • I really haven't gotten suggestions either.

I'm a teacher and had 2 suggestions from students - both were Kinsler. Like the ex TX Rangers baseball player! Weird.
