Starting weight higher than I'd like (2nd baby)

Guess I'm just looking for support or tips from moms who've been there. Another weight thread!

My last pregnancy I started at 134 pounds, gained 40, and lost 25 pronto. Took a year to lose 10 more and I never lost the last 5.

I'm pregnant with #2 and so anxious that I'm 9 weeks and starting heavier than with my last. I'm wanting to only gain 25 pounds but not sure how to go about it. Obviously eating clean and exercise are the best first steps but I'm still paranoid!! Especially since I haven't been working out given 1st Tri fatigue and nausea.

Half of me wants to just enjoy the journey, love my body and not stress - the weight will come off eventually. The other half remembers how HARD it was to lose excess baby weight and wants to curb any gain immediately!

Again, thoughts/tips welcome.

  • I'm with you 100%. But I'll make you feel better - I gained almost 70 lbs my last pregnancy! I actually lost of all plus 5 lbs and then gained back 10, so I'm the same as you starting 5 lbs heavier at 134! Are you my twin lol. Since you basically lost it all last time I wouldn't stress. Work out when you feel better and eat healthy like you said, but don't overthink it - you'll be fine!

  • Make the healthy choices you mentioned - eating healthy foods and exercising. Obsessing over your weight gain is not a healthy choice, so try to put your focus elsewhere. In the end, some people get stretch marks, some get hair changes, some get bigger feet, some get a nice wide set of child birthing hips, some get five extra pounds that won't ever go away. Your body is hard at work, so be healthy, but also gentle with yourself.

  • Although I'm not starting this PG out heavier, I can understand wanting to gain a bit less this time. I gained about 20 pounds more than I needed to the first time, mainly because I really over indulged in the 3rd tri. This time around I'm going to focus on making healthier choices and limiting the ice cream and cookie binges to a more reasonable amount. I'm not planning on overthinking it, just eating healthy. Whatever I end up gaining is ok!

  • I think our bodies kind of have an idea of what our final weight should be. With my second pregnancy I started 10 lbs heavier and finished almost exactly the same weight as with my first.
    Married to E on June 5, 2010
Gave birth to baby boy, I, on March 25, 2012
Gave birth to baby girl, A, on May 20, 2013
    Baby #3 due April 29, 2015

Recovering from mitochondrial dysfunction and Addison's/possibly very severe adrenal burn out using food, medicine, and a large amount of garden therapy.
  • I'm starting at very overweight so i'm pretty worried about weight gain too, though in my opinion you weigh next to nothing right now (if my pound- kg converter is right) ! I wouldn't worry so much ;)
If you are worried about your image then i would say you'll still look fine even if you gain a little! Maybe just try not to overeat and keep your current amount of exercise!
  • I look at my starting weight (Overweight but positive self-image, screw you BMI and the horse you rode in on) as a reserve for baby. I have less demand on myself to increase my intake and I just make sure to stay active. You don't have to go to the gym to be active!

Like PPs stated, eat when you're hungry and don't when you're not. Feel free to indulge on occasion as long as those occasions aren't super frequent.

  • This is my first and while we were just starting to try, it happened much quicker than I thought.  And while I'm thrilled, this all happened before I was at the ideal weight, in the ideal house, at the ideal job (all ok, just not ideal).  I'm learning that some times, you can't just keep waiting until life is ideal, because it often never happens.  My goals are just to stay active (walking, jogging, light strength training, prenatal yoga) and to put more vegetables in my mouth than oreos.  Don't focus on those 5 lbs, and  instead focus on what makes your body feel good.

  • Talk to your provider if you are worried, but really it sounds like you fall in the 'normal' range on the Height/Weight Scale and therefore it'll be recommended that you gain somewhere between 20-30 ish pounds (more if you're taller w/ multiples less if you're shorter/carrying 1)

But really, just do sensible eating/exercising and let the chips fall where they may.  If you end up 5lbs heavier at the end of this pregnancy but with a healthy you and kiddo, nothing else really matters.  You can lose the weight after the baby is born, but dieting/ over-worrying about weight gain while pregnant isn't healthy for you or the baby.

So yeah, eat more fruit and less cookies over the next 9 months, but if you gain a little more than you like, and you know you were doing mostly 'healthy' things, try not to worry too much.  Your Doctors will let you know if you're gaining too quickly.

  • Keep with your healthy eating, & once your energy level kicks in, incorporate a little exercise for a happy healthy pregnancy. Looks like you did well losing most of your pregnancy weight & I'm sure the same will happen
    Wish you the best!
