Help with a middle name!! :)

My husband and I are expecting our first baby! We are very excited and have already been discussing names. I'm 12 weeks and 5 days. If it's a boy his name will be River Morgan (my husbands first name.) if it's a girl we have decided on Taytem (pronounced Tatum), but we are trying to come up with a middle name! We like unique obviously! Nothing too common. Any opinions? Thanks!!

Well nothing is coming to my mind at the moment, but I love this website! It might take a few clicks but it comes up with some pretty cool names.
  • Loading the player...
  • Boba Fett... that's what I'd use. :)

  • I would also use the original spelling too. It's trendy and unique without the re-spelling.

I think a 1 syllable name would go good, for example:

    Tatum Faye
    Tatum Paige
    Tatum Brynn
    Tatum Brooke

  • Oh this is such a challenge because naming a baby is so personal!

    Skye
    Skylar
    Kenzie
    Xander
    Samara
    Mya

It can go on. . .good luck!

My sisters name is Valara. Constantly mispronounced, she always gets asked where that name came from, what kind of name it is, etc. it was only because my parents wanted something unique. She hates it. I wouldn't misspell the name on purpose either.
    Tatum is cute though.
  • I wouldn't mess with the spelling either. I hate random y's and k's added to names for no reason.

  • You can name her after a grandma or mother. That's what we are doing with the middle name.
  • I would love to use my mothers name in some way, who passed away 5 years ago. Her name was Amy though and it really doesn't go as a middle name. She hated her own middle name so it's not even considered.
  • I agree on the spelling, just my opinion but I really like Tatum. I think it's a unique name so a simple middle name would sound good with it. Tatum Marie, Grace or Ann maybe.
  • I love River Morgan, very nice. Don't like Taytem spelled this way. I like traditional spellings. As for middle names, I am find of family names. For instance, if we have a girl her man will be Marie- a name in share with my mother and grandmothers. For a boy, looking at a couple family names that I like as well.

  • Eek. No to the extra random y and no to the MNs you're thinking about as seen in the XP from BNB. I'd make suggestions, but our styles are wayyyyy different. I have a lot of great, unique names, but they are legitimate, historical, properly spelled and not trendy. For someone who wants unique, Brylie does NOT fit the bill. So trendy and will be SO dated in ten years.

Would you mind listing some of the names you like? H and I have almost nothing on our list and I love E's name so I think you probably have great taste.

  • I am open to hear any middle names. I just would like to avoid names similar to "elizabeth, Ann, Georgia..." Etc. If that's your style, that's fine. It's just not mine :) and yes, Brylie is a real name. I know of several young girls named Brylie. I don't particularly like it with Taytem though.
  • I like the idea of using your mom's name. If Amy doesn't work, how about mixing up the spelling and using May? Taytem May?
  • Totally agree with PP. I like the name Tatum. But people are not going to pronounce it right. And your daughter will have to correct people her whole life. I think something more girly as a middle name to go with Tatum. I like Tatum Mae.

    Is Brylie a real name?!?!?

Nope! But you'd be amazed how many parents are using it and variations of it these days! Right up there with Brinley and Brixley and what the fuck ever else people come up with. But it sure isn't unique or real.
  • Please please please don't use Taytem. In 18 years no one will care about Tatum Channing. And actually, actress Tatum O'Neal was the first one to make that first name famous, so don't punish your daughter because a guy has that name now.

I was also going to say Tatum Rose, like one of the PPs.

  • @Darbie914‌ I love Willow and Brooke! I'll add them to the list of possibilities for my husband and I to look at.
And @Michelgesen‌ I love Amelia! I was actually thinking about that since people sometimes use Amy as the nickname. And it flows good with Taytem :) thanks for all the suggestions!
  • Look... If you guys have not gotten the point yet- I will spell MY child's name the way I want to. Just like all of you have your opinion on names, I do too. I simply asked for middle names. Not for your opinion on which way I spell my child's name. If you don't have any middle names that you'd like to throw in, then just don't comment. Thanks.
  • @kellbell1982‌ I simply don't like it spelt "Tatum." That's it. The way I view a name isn't going to be changed by people I don't even know. I understand that you don't like the way I'm choosing to spell it, that's fine. People do not have to be rude about it though. There are several names that people I see on here are choosing for their child, and I simply don't like the name but I'm not going to be rude about it. The thing is, I know I can't control what people are going to comment but I asked for suggestions on middle names. So if people want to continue wasting their time harping on the way I'm choosing to spell my baby's name, then so be it.
  • Poor little Taytem is going to be pissed...

  • I know where I live there are LOTS of little girls with variations on names like Brylee, Kesley, Kenley, Taytum, Berkli, etc. While I agree that most seem made up and I wouldn't choose any of them, her little Taytem may not be out of place where she lives. Just playing devil's advocate.

As for middle names, I like the nature-themed Sage and Rose. Claire and Amelia also flow nicely.
  • There's a difference between a name not being your type but butchering a name that you don't even have to live with the rest of your life just to be yoonique is just selfish. Honestly spelled wrong, Taytem just sounds like a stripper name. I'd be pissed at my mom for naming me that and go by my middle name. So you should at least make that an actual name so your poor daughter has a chance at being viewed as an adult.
  • OP, I get that you want to name YOUR baby what you want and spell it how you want. However , if you ask for opinions, you really don't have room to get upset when people take the time to oblige you, and give an opinion.
  • OP...read the top post on the name board. I had a complete change of heart with our girl's name after reading that.

Are you by chance British? I know there are variations in proper spelling between American English and British English (such as Spelled vs Spelt). I don't know anything about the etymology of the name Tatum/Taytum - just curious if your choice in spelling is a location/language thing. If not, please don't name your child Taytum. No y. PLEASE.

  • Also...the cost of many personalized items is by the letter. Taytum will end up costing you and your child more money than Tatum.

As someone with 9 letters in their name when 8 would have gotten the point across I can say from experience this is a real issue and is frustrating.

I think I've mentioned before that we love Maeve for a girl, for all the bolded reasons, but I do have a feeling it is going to pick up as a chosen name for hipster types which drives me nuts. What do you think out of curiousity?
@wonknessmonster, what a lovely REAL name! Maeve was on my list, but sadly DH vetoed it. Are you Irish? I know lots of Maeves amongst my Irish family and friends, so I think of it as being classic and traditional, not hipster.

  • @wonknessmonster‌ Love Maeve! Very classic and not overused (yet). Might pick up a little, but I don't see it being top 20. I considered it for my list, but middle name will be Mae and that's just a bit much lol
  • Yeah. Taytem is challenging. Picture it at the top of a job resume or college application. ::shudder::

What about Tegan? I *think* it's unisex...

I love this site! Lol I could sit there for hours while it generates random names :)
  • Adding a Y doesn't make it any more feminine and since it is so easy to pronounce you shouldn't butcher it. I also think if you are going to go with a unique name you should have a traditional name for the middle name to balance it out, exactly as you would do with River Morgan. And actually I think Morgan for her middle name would be cute too.

Another vote here for spelling names either in the most common or phonetic form. Unusual names are great, just please pick something easy to pronounce. My first name is Kayde, pronounced like Katie (and EVERYONE says Kade). People will either get the pronunciation or the spelling right, almost never both.

And trust me, either your child will be super outspoken and correct everyone who says it wrong, or like 95% of us with these names, will just give up caring and answer to whatever.

And forget finding named items in the store, just wait until your LO starts getting IDs and plane tickets... because it's really fun refilling out forms tons of times or arguing with the TSA because the name on your ticket is mispelled.

It's funny that you posted this because my name is Kaidi (pronounced Katie) and everyone one misspells it and everyone says it wrong. But I wouldn't change it if I could. I have always loved my name and even as a child I spelled it for everyone who simply asked me my name bc I thought it was so cool that my name was so unique, it never bothered me that I couldn't buy just anything personalized from the store. I have always been proud of my name.
