Trying to Get Pregnant

Drink Till Its Pink... ?

"Tis the motto of many of the ladies on this board- and has been for myself for months.  I just got of my weekly phone call with Dad and he started going on about alcohol while TTC and dangers from an very early point so I have done some research.

Background: My mom passed away when I was a teen and I am very close with my Dad.  I was home for the first time in 18 months and was having issues with some new meds and thyroid (I was on super-steriods so I ate everything and puffed up).  I also went  to the states for 3 weeks without DH (no chance of conception) so I enjoyed my vacation with adult beverages when they were offered but didn't get ridiculous (no bikini tops and beads action).  Dad knows I am TTC and have been for a while and have issues... he was also the lucky one who found me at 14 passed out on the tile floor from the pain of my first of many ovarian cyst bursts.

OK so my understanding is this: DRINK TILL ITS PINK BECAUSE- on a "typical cycle" you have 7-10 days from conception to implantation, then another 7-12 days until you share a blood stream with the embryo.  Meaning on the short side if you made it to day 14 without POAS congrats to you but you should get a pink well before your actually sharing nutrients with the implanted embryo.  Personally if I am DPO8 or higher and planing on going out I just POAS anyways... because they are Wondfos and they are cheap.ALSO- it was just FAS awareness day (maybe why the news stories)... I have had several students with FAS and am well aware of the possible consequences of this disease.

So I said I did some readings here they are:
Biomed Central (Peer Reviewed) article on mothers habits during pregnancy
For the non-scientists "The study, conducted in Ireland, included more than 60,000 pregnant women, who were interviewed approximately 10-12 weeks into their pregnancy. Their answers were compared with data from their baby’s birth record and to records from the hospital’s baby care unit. Only two women in 1,000 said they were heavy drinkers, meaning they drank more than 20 units per week. These women were most likely to be young and also to have used illegal drugs. While heavy drinking was related to very premature birth, the researchers did not find the amount of alcohol a woman drank and the occurrence of birth defects in her baby."

You start to share a blood supply around six weeks, no?
I read a few different pieces that varied from 2-6 weeks for umbilical and placental development... the fact that I couldn't easily pinpoint this as someone who does a ton of scientific reading is annoying.  FFS we know more about each hour of a bacteria/worms development than our own species or is that much shit information out there it makes us loose the rest of it in the blurr

I *believe* drugs and alcohol can affect the baby before this anyway if they are present in mom. Since the brain and spinal cord are the first to form they are the most likely to be affected by early drug use. I can't say this 100% though
My understanding was that until development of the umbilical/placenta all nutrients are provided from what is initially in the egg... like a chicken?

There is a new lot of epigenetic research that our life choices (food/exercise etc) have not only an impact on future generations as well... but again another soap box on another board
  • I did not read all those links but I had read way back when I was pregnant with #1 that you dont share blood with baby until about 6 weeks. Alcohol does not stay in your blood stream that long that if you drank even at 14 dpo that it could possibly still be in your system still even a day later. (Assuming you did not get fall down, pass out drunk.) and technically you can have a glass of wine every now and then while pregnant, not that I personally do, but regaurdless even a small amount of exposure is not going to garm the baby. My latest bfp was around 18dpo, because I wasn't charting. But I had a feeling I was pregnant for a few days. If I knew I was going to go out drinking I would have taken a test earlier. I really hope that made sense! I tend to be rambly and not always get my point across crearly :/

  • You do not share blood with a baby.
This is correct but many nutrients/other compounds are shared... and alcohol can cross the barrier... I was trying not to be too much of a scientific snob
  • Yep, still going with drink 'til it's pink. Not that I drink much or very often, but I'm not avoiding it. Same with caffeine and whatnot. I mean one day I might forgo alcohol completely, along with all of the other things I'm supposed to cut back on, but I'm just personally not at that point yet.  And if I do go there, I would never judge other women TTC who continued to drink.

  • I still fall into the drink til it's pink camp. I will say, though, when I was pregnant with my son, I lost  interest in alcohol around implantation (8dpo or so). We were at a barn party and I just couldn't hang, which is not my normal style.

The night before my BFP, I did end up celebrating a work win with some super cheap gas station wine. So, I'd advice anyone who is drinking till it's pink to pick the good stuff b/c i spent the next nine months cursing my bad taste and missing homebrew.
  • On a broader scale though, anyone who is TTC and drinks until it's pink normally finds out 10-16 DPO. Anyone not TTC normally ends up at least 21 DPO or much more before they find out. Especially if they have irregular or long cycles. So, with such a variance in the time a mom can find out she is pregnant, where does the damage line fall? I'm talking about binge drinking here. Not, I had a glass of champagne on New Year's Eve in my second trimester. I think we just must do the best we can with the knowledge we have.

I hope that made sense. 14 DPO and I am having a last tottie and cigarette (about one smoke every 2-3 days) before I test in the morning. If you have followed or seen my last two days you know why I needed this final.

In the end, you must do what you are comfortable with.

  • I drink maybe once a month, no joke. I just don't drink that much. So if my whim to have a drink strikes during my 2WW then I go ahead. I mean, cheap date that I am, half a beer has me buzzed.

My H can't drink at all so I'm in the "drink till it's pink" . My feeling is that if you aren't binge drinking then you should be fine.

  • I noticed that many of the months where I drank more heavily were also the months with delayed ovulation. This could also be because of emotional stress (I drink more when shit is fucked up), but I doubt it since I don't lose sleep or other high-stress symptoms. I should also mention, I drink a lot when I drink. None of this one or two glasses of wine once a week stuff. Quiet weeknights was usually one or two beers or glasses of wine, weekends was easily three beers in the day and half a bottle of wine at night, and any night with the girls could be easily four glasses of wine or cocktails.

I'm currently trying to lose some weight and have restricted the drinking to two beers or two glasses of wine per day on the weekends only. I've already lost 11 pounds, but I crave the wine in the fridge downstairs.

So I guess I'm in the drink til it's pink, but drink lightly if I want it to turn pink.

  • I'm on my 13th cycle, so that would have been over 6 months of no drinking (2 weeks a cycle). That would have sucked. Although I might have lost some weight... maybe I should not drink in the 2WW just to drop a few pounds ;)

I will probably drink til its pink unless there is evidence that shows it severely impacts fertility or the health of the fetus.
