just another innocent poll--vaccination

Re: just another innocent poll--vaccination

  • I need to do a lot more research on gardasil once my daughter is of age, yesterday someone posted something on facebook, (yes I know I just ranted about this) but I read it and it was talking about how one of the chemists behind creating gardasil has now come out saying that it does more harm then good and stated that 42 girls have died from getting it at too young of an age...

No idea if this is true but this is maybe the reason that people are hesitant because we aren't at the point of having to research it.

My roommate did have a bad version of HPV which had the cancer cells and had to have a procedure done which left her quite miserable for a few months. Because of that I went out and got the first two shots of gardasil but never ended up getting the last one. It was at the end of college and just forgot to follow up (dumb I know) but I also subsequently found out I had HPV, one of the less harmful strains which has now disappeared on its own.

But there are a few things that I can't even talk to you if you believe, much less be your friend.  Being an anti-vaxxer is one.  (To give you an example, not believing in the moon landing is another - they are wide ranging =D )"

This. Exactly. I have a friend who vaccinated her DD and is starting to TTC this fall. She told me if her next child is a boy, she will not vaccinate him due to the autism link SMH! My first thought was, my children will never play with your children if you actually do this. I have zero tolerance for non-vaccinators, unless there is an absolute, legitimate medical reason.

BTW - my first child, a boy, is fully vaccinated and will continue to be. He received the MMR "on schedule" at 12 months. No issues/concerns/complications whatsoever. DD, who will be born in January will also be fully vaccinated.

  • @ExcitedMama2, there's a great article that discusses how people are hesitant to talk about Gardasil b/c of the way it's transmitted.  A doctor points out that you usually don't discuss how different diseases are transmitted (fecal matter and polio anyone?), so why would we discuss how HPV is transmitted?

My cousin got all up in arms when the pediatrician mentioned considering getting her son the Guardasil vaccine a couple years ago and switched him to a different doctor over it!  She acted as if he was insinuating that her son was already sexually active at 10.  No, but some kids are at 12 these days!  I couldn't even participate in that conversation.  I actually went and got it after I was already married, because it didn't come out until then.  You never know if your spouse might cheat or you might split up and still be vulnerable to HPV.

  • I'm mobile but whomever said there was some article about 40-some odd girls dying from Gardasil needs to fact check that. The FDA has strict reeve processes for drugs (I used to work on translations for clinical trials and the rules were INTENSE), and it never would have gotten to market if that were remotely true.

I will likely give Gardasil to any child of mine around middle school years. It will be part of an ongoing discussion of safe sex. I had HPV and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

  • There should be another Yes, gray area in your poll. It's not all or nothing, Yes, I will vacinnate my child but I will space the vaccines out so he's not getting 4 shots in a signle doctors visit and I will also veto unnecessary ones that seem to be "recommended" to make pharacutical companies money. You wouldn't give you kids extra medicinesthey dont need with potential side effects, why should we give them every possible vaccine?

  • I vaccinated all my girls aside from Blythe ( she wasn't allowed due to her seizures) but as soon as we got the ok which did take years she was caught up on all her vaccinations. I however never do the flu shot

I'm pretty damn thankful for vaccines.

  • Everyone is entitle to their own opinion and I not trying to convince anyone else otherwise. Since this is an innocent poll and everyone seems to have the same opinion, I thought I would share that there is a gray area between " fully vaccinated" and " no vaccincations"

And btw the way, my father is a doctor, my mother a nurse, I've grown up with a lot of medical knowledge besides research, so I'm not randomly choosing the info I like and dismissing medical logic.

I personally think that people who are dead set against ANY vaccination are the craziest bunch, because vaccine save lives, and prevent diseses, mumps, measles, polio, whooping cough just a few examples of diseases that kill or cripple people children that we NEED to be vaccinated for. However we seem to have vaccines for absolutely everything these days and kids have seem to be sicker than ever. The CDC vaccine schedule https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/child-adolescent.html Shows a 2 and 4 month baby getting 5 vaccinations at that scheduled visit. You wouldnt take 5 medications at once and then not know which had a side effect that hurt you? That's really all I am saying is that if my baby has a reaction to ANY medication vaccine or antibiotic I want to know what caused it.

It's something I've researched in great detail, I am not swayed by " attention grabbing headlines"

We are a pretty open minded group, I'm not offended by anyone having their own opinion but you guys are pretty quick to assume I'm a "vaccines are poison" mom. Luckily we have an awesome Pediatrician and when we DO have an extra visit, we stop in, no wait and have a nurse give the 2nd vaccination, my pediatrician does them 30 days apart. We followed this with my daughter and she is the healthiest little girl you ever say who has hardlly even had colds and I've never seen her had a bad reaction to a shot either.

Last but not least, in my opinion, chicken pox & the flu shots are unnecessary shots in my opinion, and this does not apply to babies, but I feel that the shingles vaccine is out there specially to make $$ just to answer that question.

Shingles is miserable. It can cause chronic pain and blindness, among other things. If companies want to "make money" off preventing that, then fine with me! Don't even get me started on the flu. I work in a pediatric inpatient unit/ICU have seen far too many babies and children intubated or worse from the flu. In my opinion... not an unnecessary shot.
A friend recently had shingles.  In her INNER EAR.  She was in the hospital for a few days because of it.  It took her weeks to return to normal.  I dread shingles.  :/

  • @ICarriedAWatermelon‌ - I am definitely curious about the studies that analyzed changing the vaccine schedule. It seems counterintuitive to do so many shots at one time, but that's not based in scientific fact. I would love to learn why it is beneficial. I certainly don't have a medical degree, and would love to learn more on the subject.

And about the shingles vaccine, I had shingles. It was one of the most painful experiences of my life and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I am someone who barely ever needs more than a Tylenol, even after fairly major surgery. And with shingles, I made my doctor call in a prescription for Vicodin and I spent several days thrashing around on the couch in agony. Not fun. A vaccine to prevent that? Yes please!

  • LadyXaverian thanks for the link it's helpful. I thought if you had logical info to share I'd want to read it.

I'm close friends with someone who is a full time caretaker for an austic little girl. Her parents say she was a bubbly outgoing little girl who had a terrible reaction, fever & hives the Mumps/Rubella vaccine and was never the same afterwards. Now she needs full time care and she's 17. Maybe its all a coincidence but seeing that in person is enough for me to want to be cautious. Certainly not saying anyone else has to think the way I do.
