Found out gender what do you think of name....

My husband and I recently found out we are having a girl. I am twenty weeks and very excited. I'm just happy everything is going okay. My husband wanted a boy (of course) so when it comes to names he gives me no response. I really like the name mable. My family hates it but I think it's really cute, old fashion, different yet not too out there. What do you think?

Mabel is nice (I prefer that spelling).  We're getting strange looks for our name too (Aria) because it's a little different than I think the older generation in our family is used to.... but it is not a bad name at all, and even better it's not some mish-mash horrible spelling of a normal name like is so  prevalent nowadays, or completely made up.  I say screw the haters.  Is your husband good with the name?

  • I used to listen to a lot of punk as a teen... So I just think of the song by gold finger..... Mabel.... She's the bomb! And I like it!
I love old fashioned names though. My daughter is Molly. And I want Stella for the next :)
  • it's not really my style, but it's a good name.  i prefer "mabel" to "mable" though.

  • Love Mabel. I dont love the Mable spelling - looks too much like marble.  But really do love the name otherwise!
  • I love that name! Older names are so adorable, especially for little girls. I say go for it.
  • I agree with PPs, I think the Mabel spelling is a bit nicer. Mable looks too much like maple or marble to me.

I love the name Mabel though!! I think it's beautiful and I love old fashioned/rarely used names like that.

  • I love Mabel. I think your family will come around to it once they associate it with your little girl.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • Its not my favorite but older names are coming back around.

Also, I think that super childish that because your husband wanted a boy he won't participate in the naming of your girl!
  • Mabel is a cute name :) if you like it, go for it. I don't really care what anyone thinks of the names I choose. People eventually quiet down about names once the baby is born; for whatever reason they think they have a say until the baby is born.

    Do what YOU want :)

Mable is a cute name. Nowadays, the only consideration is whether autocorrect will recognize it. Autocorrect changed it to marble for me.

Hahaha I forced autocorrect to learn my son's name. I do what I want, autocorrect be damned ;)

  • I think Mable is a super cute name but I agree with PP on changing the spelling to Mabel.

I didn't tell anybody my son's name until after he was born for this exact reason. I loved the name we chose and I didn't want anyone's silly opinion changing my mind. Don't worry what others think and do what makes YOU happy!

  • I like Mabel.

I'm aging myself, but I remember Mad About You--a show with Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt.  They had a baby, and decided to name her Mabel--Mothers Always Bring Extra Love.  Totally cheesy, but it's cute.
I used to watch that show with my aunt. I remember when they had the baby! I thought it was cute

Love it but would spell it Mabel also. Then you have no problem with auto correct either:)

  • Definitely NMS. I realize it's probably the point, but it just seems so old lady-ish to me. There are plenty of "old fashioned" names that don't sound like granny is back in kindergarten, and that's what Mabel says to me.

All that to say, my opinion really doesn't matter in the naming of your child. If you really like it then go for it!

  • Mabel is the way most people spell it I am noticing. I got four months to decide but thank you ladies! For girl it's so hard
  • @MarxieVonTrapp  I thought the same thing!  I like the name Mabel.  I have a 90+ y.o. Mabel in my life.  She was named after her own mother, Mabel.  When Mad About You used Mabel, my Mabel said "why would anyone do that to a poor child!?!"  I personally think it's cute and think it's no different than all of the Stellas, Rubys, and Hazels out there now.
  • Damn I love ruby too! Just doesn't go with my last name!!
  • I agree with PP that if you like it use it. Naming another human is hard enough without dealing with outside criticism. My family has hated both of my son's names, but once DS1 was born they all loved it and say they can't imagine him as anything else just like I'm sure they'll feel when DS2 gets here.
