I feel like I'm missing bits of what's going on. My gramps drops by for coffee before or after he goes to the hospital and he either isn't telling me everything or he's confused himself. If I called the doctor/nurses, would they tell me what's going on?
Probably not unless there was a signed release, you were on a list of approved family, or had POA. Voicing your concerns could help them though. And you can request a family meeting with the doctor.
If you think she is not being given proper care, you might want to contact a social worker that specifically works with elderly patients. They might be able to help or at least give you guidance as to what the legal options are here. Not to say that your Grandfather isn't taking good care or her, but if he is having his own issues, it might be better to have someone else in the family be the one that makes medical decisions for her. Just a thought...
Well I spoke with my grandfather and she's on meds for Dementia and depression. So I guess it's a wait and see? I just wish she could at least be in her own home. She wants to be home so badly
My Grandmother had it when she died. She was diagnosed with it a few months after my Grandfather died. Her doctors told my mom that severe depression caused her onset of Dementia. She was doing fine for about 2 years, and then one day she decided to stop taking her meds. She relapsed, and ended up in the hospital. She started taking her meds again, and was released from the hospital under the care of my mom. Eventually things got worse, and she just got really mean. She tell all the girls that we where fat, ugly, and whores. She would act, and talk like a baby, and pee herself. She thought it was a normal thing to do. She would throw herself on the floor, kicking and screaming when the home health nurse would come by everyday. Eventually she just stopped eating, and wouldn't take her meds again. She died about 2 years after her diagnosis of a heart attack.
