help! accidentally ate raw fish :(

I went to DH's family's house for a birthday. they're from Laos and they had this dish called "jaow" which is basically like a dipping sauce for rice and stuff. well, I ate only two bites until someone told me it contained raw fish in it! I freaked out and stopped eating it. I don't know if I should be worried or not, I have a dr appt tomorrow anyway so I will ask him his opinion, but I wanted to know what y'all think. If this happened to you (and you only had a couple bites) would you be worried about it? Thanks everyone for the support.

  • Im sure you'll be fine. Everything in moderation.

  • I honestly wouldn't worry about it.  I ate raw fish eggs accidentally at a sushi restaurant and everything was fine.  If it was bad, I'm sure your body will let you know.  I would let the doctor know when you go in, but in the meantime I would try and just relax.

  • The concern with raw fish is the risk that it can carry foodborne illness, not that the fish itself is bad for you or baby.

If you don't feel sick, and no one else got sick from it, you're fine :)

    No. Chill.

Call your doctor in the morning if it will help to put you at ease, but chances are very, VERY high that you're just fine. You had very little, and assuming the place was reputable, you probably could have had a great deal more without causing an issue.

Well, since it was homemade, I'd be a little concerned about food handling methods. My husband's family is also from Southeast Asia, and a lot of the food handling habits they brought over with them make me a little uneasy.

That said, OP, as PP said, it's a foodborne illness concern. If it's a problem, you'll know.

  • The changes of you actually getting sick is pretty low.  I ate raw fish by accident about a month ago.  I bit into a peice of fried fish and it was completely raw on the inside.  I flipped and freaked for nothing.  I think my worry made me sicker than the actual fish.

  • Don't worry. Worst case, you'd get food poisoning.  Seriously you have nothing to worry about.  Second pregnancy and I've thrown nearly all the rules out the window.  I've continued to eat sushi.  Bad?  Maybe.  But I haven't gotten sick and baby is just fine.

    So really. Don't worry.

  • I've had raw shrimp a couple times from reputable sushi places that I've eaten at for a long time. I've decided to call it quits completely, but I'm honestly not worried about it. Maybe I'm too blazay about it.
  • I wouldn't worry too much.  I ate sushi throughout my pregnancy and I am fine and so is my baby.  But there is no harm in mentioning it to your dr if you're really worried.

  • I've had raw sushi with both pregnancies and so far so good :)

    You're probably fine.

  • I can't find the statistics on foodborne illnesses that can come from fish but let me drop a realistic statistic that will make you feel better.

I recently looked this up on the CDC website. The HIGHEST number of fetal deaths from listeriosis on record is THREE (3) in one year.

    3. In the whole country. Statistically that means it basically doesn't happen.  Fetal deaths from car accidents are like 3000. Meaning getting into a car is THREE THOUSAND times more dangerous.

So while this is something to protect yourself against, it's so incredibly unlikely, especially from some dipping sauce, one time.

I see the point in protecting yourself from unnecessary risks but there is a whole lot of worry about nothing here.

  • Not a big deal... women in Japan eat raw fish all througout pregnancy with no problems.

I got raw spicy salmon sushi Sunday night because I have been craving it for ages. If you only ate a few bites, and you're not sick now (food borne illness) then you will likely be just fine.

Exactly. This advice is given to us, because food poisoning is serious for babies. That's the real concern. You're fine. Go watch t.v. and take a deep breath.
